Yoshiwara Hana Oboro [Chapter 12-13] -Fin-

Chapter 12: Going Around in Circles Takitsuki is telling Hana and the kids about a horror story regarding the covered well. She warns them not to go close to it for there’s a night when a crying voice can be heard from it. A scream filled with grudge calls out, ‘let me out’. And if they were to be attracted to the voice and went to remove the lid from the well, a woman’s hand will come out--.. Hana and the kids scream in fright. Hana tells her to please don’t talk about it anymore. Takitsuki happily asks if they were afraid. Hana narrates that they are staying in Mitsubaya for three days since the fire. Even if the fire didn’t spread, Shiromatsuya has been reduced to rubble so they are temporarily taking shelter at Mitsubaya. Toraji exclaims that story is a lie. Takitsuki says that it isn’t a lie for there are people who fell in the well and was never seen again. She darkly says that she has seen it – a hand reaching out from behind and wanting to pull you down the well. Just then, Rennosuke touches Hana’s shoulder that Hana starts screaming in fright. Rennosuke muses that it is that again, her great reaction upon startling her. In tears, Hana tells him not to do that for she is really afraid. Rennosuke laughs and tells her not to be that angry. Holding her hair, he says that if she couldn’t sleep at night, he’ll accompany her to sleep. Flustered Hana shoos him away and exclaims that there’s no need. While Rennosuke happily pats her head, Hana thinks that just like before, Rennosuke is driving her around in circles. Takamichi angrily opens the door and tells them to be quiet for there is someone seeing the doctor. Assisted by Katsuki and Natsu, Akesato tells Takamichi that it is already over. Hana narrates that after the fire, Akesato’s health failed that she is always lying in bed. Hana apologizes to Akesato. Smiling Akesato says that it is okay and she should be the one who should apologize for making everyone worry at this time. As Natsu gives Akesato some medicine, Hana thinks that it seems that the fire has been quite a blow to Akesato but despite of that, she is still doing her best to show that everything is alright and that is because right now is an important crucial time for Shiromatsuya. Hana thinks that she should learn this from her. Katsuki worriedly asks Hana if she is alright because she looked pale after the fire. Hana smiles and tells him that it is alright. Hana thinks that of course, she was shock over that thing with Murasaki, and Shiromatsuya being burned down, but her pendant has been broken into pieces in that fire so that means, she can no longer go back to her original era. She is actually not in the mood to smile for she is feeling uneasy because what would be her life if she has to always stay in Yoshiwara. She hasn’t thought of this.. Rennosuke quietly observes her.

Chapter 10: Innocence Thinking that she has to ask clearly to know about Rennosuke’s feelings so that she can put an end to this, Hana seriously asks, “Rennosuke, do you like Takitsuki-san?” To her surprise, he answers, “...I also don’t know.” After a pause, Hana says, “..Eh? What did you just say..” With closed eyes, Rennosuke says that he just said that he also doesn’t know. Grabbing his robe, Hana exclaims, “Ha..!? What do you mean you don’t know.” Looking sad, Rennosuke says that it means exactly what those words mean. Hana tensely asks, “..why? Just by looking, I can see that you are really concerned with Takitsuki-san. I beg of you, sincerely answer my question. I totally cannot accept this answer.” Looking surprised, Rennosuke asks what she is referring to as she cannot accept. Patting on the seating cushion, Hana sternly says, “If you don’t explain it clearly, I’m going to Takitsuki-san and inform her that you’ve attacked me, okay!? Now, quickly come and sit here.” Rennosuke is speechless. He sighs and did as told. Hana thinks that she knows that what she is doing is quite unyielding[/stubborn] but in the end, she still wants to know the answer. “Before I sever these feelings of mine, I want to know Rennosuke’s feelings--” After sitting down, Rennosuke admits to Hana that up to right now, he is still very concerned with Takitsuki. “It is only because of her happiness, that no matter what it is, I would want to try and do it [for her]. But, that isn’t my duty. *Hana looks a bit tense* The first time that I’ve met Takitsuki.. no, met Utae, it has already been 15 years since. At that time, as the second son of Kyoumatsu, it has been decided that I become the son-in-law [marrying into the girl’s family] of Utae’s family that has a gofuku [other name of kimono] at the capital city. Although, the first impression isn’t quite good..”

Title: Open-minded/Optimistic view [Note: As usual, it is a proverb and I found the translation, strangely enough, from a Korean blog ^^; It is ‘虛心坦懷’ and according to Ginny of Korean language blog from google’s cache since the blog doesn’t seem to exit anymore, it means ‘who is so open-minded that they air out anything (even stuff that should be kept to yourself) without bias. You might think that this proverb has a negative ring to it, but that’s not necessarily true. This proverb could refer to a person who is really honest. On the other hand it could have a negative connotation when it refers to a person who keeps talking without reserve.’] Rennosuke is surprised to see Hana teary-eyed. He mutters, “You..” Covering her face with her hand, Hana tells him that if he wants to do this and it can make him feel better then just go ahead and do it, but does he feel that this is okay. Looking straight at him, Hana says, “I am not Takitsuki-san.” To her surprise, Rennosuke looks serious and stands up from her. He apologizes and says that it seems that he has drunk too much. Then, he quietly leaves the room. Hana sits up and wonders what that is. As her tears start to drop, Hana thinks that it is such a painful thing knowing that guy doesn’t think of her [romantically], and it felt quite miserable because this thing happened after she had realized these feelings. Wiping her tears, Hana thinks that she unexpectedly came to really like him. Then, she notices that her flower pendant is falling out of her skirt. She wonders what’s up with her for fundamentally, she and Rennosuke are living in two different eras, and it is useless even if she has fallen in love with him because she is going back to her original world.

Title: Indignant Lamentation over the Evils of the Times [It’s an idiom and no matter where I searched in the net, it is the same meaning in Jap-Eng dictionaries. ^^;] Hana cannot believe that this is the time when the hooded man would appear just when she is going after the culprit who threw a stone at Akesato. She hesitates a bit until she hears Natsu helping Akesato. Akesato tells Natsu that she is alright and it isn’t a grave wound. Natsu protests that there’s blood. This made Hana become resolved in chasing after the culprit for if that woman is indeed the one threw the stone, she won’t let her get away with it. While chasing after the woman, Hana thinks that even if that woman is far away and she can’t see her features clearly but that person could be.. Pushing the people aside, Hana shouts, “Move aside. Ah ah, it’s really hard to move in this. (no good, I totally couldn’t catch up with her) Who can help me catch that person!!” Suddenly a couple of men catches the culprit and shouts if she was the one who threw that stone at Akesato and what is she doing to their woman. Hana recognizes them as Akesato’s customers. Pushing them aside with her shoulder, the culprit shouts for them to quickly let her go. This made the man hit the other man’s head. ^^; Hana manages to grab the culprit just when her scarf falls down. Hana exclaims, “So, it is you!” It is Murasaki. The people around recognizes Murasaki. Murasaki angrily says that Hana is too meddlesome. The man manages to hold on to Murasaki again and says that does she think that he’ll let her run off. Murasaki starts to struggle and fight off everyone. She shouts that everyone is like that, and don’t touch her. This made Hana lose her balance but Rennosuke catches her from behind. He tells her to be careful. The men had managed to grab Murasaki tightly and say that this woman really won’t give up. They plan to bring her to Shiromatsuya for her to apologize to Akesato. Rennosuke tells Hana that upon seeing her run, he was thinking of being able to help [her] or not but it seems that it isn’t needed since the others already got Murasaki. He tells her to proper stand up and Hana thanks him.

Title: Scratch an itch through one's boot/Way Off the Mark. While Katsuki carries Hana behind his back, Hana exclaims for him to quickly put her down. Katsuki asks what is she saying when she just fainted a while ago. Flustered Hana exclaims that she is saying that she is already fine now. Katsuki tells her not to force herself, and there’s no need to be modest. Hana exclaims that she isn’t being modest, and no matter what he says, this is quite an inconvenience for him that she’s being carried behind his back. Carrying the kids, Rennosuke tells Hana that she’s quite noisy that it doesn’t seem like she is someone who just fainted a while ago. “If you don’t like Katsuki to carry you, do you want me to carry you home once again?” Katsuki is puzzled over that, and Hana is really embarrassed. She angrily shouts that if she is going to be carried home by him again, she would rather go down and walk back by herself. Rennosuke laughs and says that she is quite lively, and it seems that she is already alright. Flustered Hana curses for how come she had suddenly fainted. This is the first time that it has happened when obviously, until now, she hasn’t even catch a cold. And, upon seeing Takitsuki hugging Yukiji, she really had a ‘reminisce’ kind of feeling. She wonders why, when compared to anyone else, she longs for her ‘mother’s existence. There is a scene wherein crying young Hana is being comforted by gramps. But then, she can only remember a hazy memory of her mother and yet, it would suddenly overlap with Takitsuki. It’s really strange for she thought that she had already graduated from having an attachment with her mother. She dismisses it as her uneasiness because she had suddenly come to this era. And also, she is already tired from trying to adapt to this situation. Then, they hear a woman shouting as to what she is planning to do that she would suddenly lay her hands on her customer. The other woman exclaims that it is her fault for letting the customer get away from her, and that man obviously isn’t her regular customer so don’t blame her. After getting down from Katsuki, Hana thinks that one of the women looks familiar. With everyone gathered around to watch the women quarrelling, Katsuki says that it is Murasaki. Hana exclaims that she remembered, when she first met Rennosuke, Murasaki is the woman she was chasing after him. Katsuki is surprised that Murasaki was chasing after Rennosuke.

Chapter 5’s Title: Now rejoicing, Now worrying/Swinging from Joy to Sorrow. Looking aghast, Hana is standing outside carrying a lantern with the words, ‘Shiromatsu’ [<- name of the brothel]. She is wearing her school uniform. The people around her start to take notice of her. They gather around her because they are curious about her outfit. To Hana’s horror, one of the men tries to peeks under her skirt to see what it is like inside. Hana immediately throws away the lantern and shouts for the man to stop touching her. So why is she doing this, and why she is still in a bad mood about yesterday... Flashback: At the store, Hana is surprised when Takitsuki has proven her ownership claim for the flower hairpin. Rennosuke told Takitsuki to end the idle chat there, and quickly return to her workplace. He even offered to bring her there. Takitsuki said that is okay, she can go back by herself. Rennosuke replied that even if she said that, she is still a renowned brothel tayuu and it is more convenient to have an attendant with her. [<- probably to ward off pestering guys] Hana tried to interrupt but Rennosuke apologized to her and told her to go back first. Hana is surprised when Rennosuke put his arm around Takitsuki and walked away with her. Later on, at Shiromatsu, Rennosuke praised Hana for being able to return on her own. He asked her why she is wearing her school uniform. Hana exclaimed for him to please let her see Takitsuki so that she can ask if Takitsuki can lend that hairpin to her. She told him that even if just now, nothing happened but if the situation is like how she came there, or perhaps there is that light again, maybe she’ll be able to return back to the future. Rennosuke said that he doesn’t think that just by changing her clothes, something will happen. Hana said that they won’t know unless they tried. Rennosuke told her to calm down and reminded her that hairpin isn’t hers. Hana is surprised by that so she asked him if he thought that she is lying. Rennosuke said that he didn’t say that but that thing is really Takitsuki’s. Hana realized that no matter what she said, Rennosuke or any other people of this era, won’t be able to understand. Irritated, Hana said it is enough, and left the room as Rennosuke tried to call her back. Hana thought that in THIS ERA, that hairpin belongs to Takitsuki and it became hers only after many years later. She planned to investigate things a bit for there might be clues on how she can back to her original time. Although, she is thinking that.. Rennosuke is saying Takitsuki this and that. End flashback

Title: Catch Everything in One Net/Clean Sweep [Correction on the second chapter: What seemed to have happened was the real owner died of illness. He was replaced by Gonpachi who gambled and caused the store to become bankrupt. A new heir is sent from the capital to replace him but on his way, he was murdered by Gonpachi’s hired assassins.] Rushing to meet with Rennosuke, Hana hopes that he is okay. Somewhere else, Rennsouke asks the masked men as to what now, after luring him to some remote corner, and what business do they have with him. When one of the men starts to unsheathe his katana, Rennosuke says that is very dangerous. One of the men says that he is still very calm. He tells Rennosuke to quickly make a move else it puts him on a bad mood. To the man’s surprise, Rennosuke quickly rushes towards him and pushes the man’s katana back to its scabbard. He apologizes to the man and says that if he is talking about in a bad mood, it goes the same with him [Rennosuke]. As his scarf-hood reveals his face, the man is startled. Rennosuke tells him that honestly, it should be that, he has business with them. He punches the man’s face. The other man swings his sword but Rennosuke dodges and hits the [other] man’s nape. When he tries to stand up, Rennosuke is already standing on his head. Rennosuke looks at the man he punched earlier, and asks if they forgot about him already, but then it was dark before, so they probably didn’t see him properly. “But, I clearly remember your faces.” The frightened man asks what he is talking about, and then, he quickly tries to run away. Just as Rennosuke shouts for the man to stop, Hana arrives and shouts, ‘St--op!’. Then, she quickly slides down on the ground [like in baseball] and trips the guy. While Rennosuke is shock to see Hana, the man trips and falls into some buckets near the well. Hana happily turns to Rennosuke and says that it seems things have gone smoothly. Rennosuke looks aghast and speechless. After recovering from his shock, he angrily asks why she is there. Hana tells him that it is because she saw those two guys heading out of the store to go after him, and since she is in pins and needles worrying about him, she thought that it is necessary to warn him. Rennosuke shouts that there is no need for it and why can’t she have some foresight. Hana exclaims that there is no need for him to be angry. The fallen man curses over Hana. When he is about to stand up, someone steps on his hand that is holding the katana. It is Takamichi who comments that it makes him feel shameful because if one is going to do something, one shouldn’t fail at it. Hana wonders why the person, who ordered the owner to kill Rennosuke, is there.

Title: Mutability/Contant Change Takamichi [formerly Takadou] tells Gonpachi that he wants him to kill Umenosuke. Gonpachi nervously laughs and tells him not to kid around. Takamichi says that he isn’t kidding and what is he afraid of, for he [Gonpachi] was the one who had Ren-sama, the heir of the store, murdered. This shocks Hana when she realizes that the one who had caused the heir to fall down the valley, according to Akesato [formerly Akari] is actually Gonpachi. [<-Sorry, I made a mistake in the last chapter. It was Akesato telling Umenosuke that the heir got into an accident by falling down the valley on his way from Edo. Not, Umenosuke saying about man ‘falling rock bottom’ ^^; Edit: It seems to be like this, the owner died of illness and Gonpachi is ruining the store because of gambling. So, the new heir, from the capital, is going to replace him but Gonpachi got him killed.] Gonpachi nervously asks how did Takamichi knew. Takamichi says, so that’s it and thankfully Gonpachi is stupid so this is a big help to him. Gonpachi starts to deny it and says that his men did it on their own will. Takamichi tells him to calm down for he won’t tell anyone about it. He suggests to Gonpachi to just get the help of those guys whom he hired to kill Ren-sama because after all, it is just killing one more person. Gonpachi asks him what his issue with Umenosuke is. Takamichi tells him that they are business rivals at the capital, and that guy’s business is pretty hard to cope[/rival] with. Takamichi laughs and says that he isn’t forcing Gonpachi to do this for he has nothing to do with Gonpachi even if he becomes heavily in debt of loans and goes bankrupt. Gonpachi relents and says okay. Hana is shock over the dangerous stuff that they were talking about and if they knew that she has overheard them, she will definitely be killed to shut her mouth about it. She decides to quickly leave but the wooden floor creaks. This alerted the two men who went out of the room and exclaim who is there. But, no one is at the corridor. Gonpachi wonders if it is the wind but Takamichi looks suspicious as he looks at the side. He says that it seems to be [wind]. At the corner, Umenosuke has already pulled Hana to him and covered her mouth for her not to make a sound. Inside the room, Umenosuke release Hana that made her exclaim as to what he is doing. Umenosuke apologizes for being rough on her and tells her to relax first by deep breathing. Hana did as told before she exclaims that this isn’t the time to do this for he is already out of luck because it is all over for him [/he’s deadmeat]. After looking surprised, Umenosuke acts as if it is nothing by saying if she meant it is dangerous, and he was really startled by her scary expression. Hana grabs his coat and exclaims if this is the time to make a joke when that guy just said that he is going to kill him. She asks what he did to that Takamichi guy, does he know him, and is it about some woman. Somewhat surprised, Umenosuke asks why it is about woman, and he does know the guy for they are business rivals. He tells her that every time they meet at the capital city, Takamichi would angrily stare at him but he didn’t expect that he was hated that much for him [Takamichi] to want to kill him. Aghast Hana asks why he is still calm right now.

Title: Groping in the Dark [<- Another idiom which also mean clueless. I guess the titles will be from idioms.] Clang. Clang. Hana hugs her pillow tight and thinks that it is too noisy. She remembers a man asking from what store she works as a yujo [woman of pleasure]. Hana exclaims what he is talking about. She remembers another man holding her and telling her that as a yujo, she shouldn’t be picky with her customers. Hana exclaims that isn’t right, she is just a female high schooler. Clang. Clang. “Stop while you are ahead..it’s noisy to death that I totally couldn’t get to sleep.” A man says, “Oh ya, at Yoshiwara, you cannot be like that.” Clang. Hana sits up and shouts so what Yoshiwara is, and don’t talk about such nonsense things. Holding a frying pan and ladle, an old man asks Hana if she’s asking what Yoshiwara is. Holding her pillow, Hana looks at him in surprise. The old man asks if she is finally awake. Hana asks her grandpa why he is there. Looking around, Hana finds herself in her own room. Her grandpa looks dark and says that she is asking why, but of course, it is to wake her up. “Or perhaps, you are not yet awake? *getting his frying pan and ladle ready* Want me to do it one more time?” Hana exclaims that she is awake. Remember seeing that Oirandouchuu [courtesan parade], and the leading courtesan telling her that she is blocking the road, Hana thinks, “So it turns out.. to be only a dream? *surprised* Is that so..it was like that.” Her grandpa laments that it is obviously Sunday, and yet, she is freeloading like that. “Don’t you have some kind of date?” Hana exclaims that he is too meddlesome. Proudly posing, her grandpa says that speaking of that, he has a date with Nichoume [二丁目]’s Mio-chan [美緒]. Hana gloomily thinks that he is like Master Roshi [DBZ]. Her grandpa tells her that is the situation so he’ll leave the store up to her. [The store’s name has the words 呉服. It isn’t complete but those words could mean, either as an old term for kimono or a term for dry goods.] Hana exclaims what she will do if a customer comes. Her grandpa tells her to just let the customer choose one. This makes Hana think that this isn’t reality. Preparing to go out of the room, her grandpa tells her to go down and eat together with him, since he is already hungry. Hana sits up and says, “Okay. Okay.” Then, she realizes that she cannot move. Her grandpa asks her what’s wrong, he’ll be going down first. Aghast, Hana tries to call out to her grandpa to wait. “Grandpa!!”

[Free Talk:  This is a new series serialized in Asuka by Otonaka Sawaki. Except for the two main couple’s names that are mentioned in the official page, the rest of the names are guesswork based on the kanji. ]

A female high schooler looks surprised to see cherry blossoms petals floating around. Then, there is a parade of oiran-s [/courtesans], wearing 15-cm tall geta [/wooden clogs]. She wonders, “Is this reality? I have seen this scene on the television. If I remember, it is called ‘Oirandouchuu’ [/parade of courtesans]..” Title: Uncanny relationship formed by a quirk of fate. [<- It’s an idiom] The girl looks mesmerized at how gorgeous the courtesan is. “Is this.. a dream..?” She looks at her hand which is empty. Then, the leading courtesan of the parade tells her to move since she is blocking the road. She goes, ‘Huh?’ While a man pulls her up and asking if she didn’t hear what the oiran just said, the girl thinks that it seems real and could a dream be like this. The man says that he doesn’t know whose yujo [woman of pleasure/prostitutes; literally ‘play girl’] she is but she is wearing such strange clothes. The man pushes her hard from the back and tells her to go watch at that side. The girl loses her balance and hits the buckets that are on top of a well. Holding her head, the girl thinks that it is obviously a dream so how come it hurts. Some men ask if she is alright since she fell hard. Pinching her cheek really hard, the girl wonders, if this is really not a dream. Hitting her fist on her palm, she happily says that this is a shooting of a television drama, a period play. The man asks what ‘shooting’ is. They say that she is wearing strange clothes. Assuming that she is a yujo, they ask her what her name is. She tells them that she is Okazaki Hana. They say that they had never heard of her. They begin to wonder out loud if she is a hashitame [lowest form of yujo, a low-class prostitute; lowly maidservant] because her legs are exposed. They say that since she is young, she must be capable. “I know. In order to recruit customers, you block the road of Takizuki [滝月] tayuu [/highest ranked courtesans]. Pointing to himself, the man asks if she would let him be her customer. Another man says that it should be him. While the two are fussing about, Hana asks what they are talking about ‘customers’ and ‘yujo’. A man tells her that this place is Yoshiwara and just to be her customer, they are making a ruckus. Hana looks surprised by this. She learned from watching the television that Yoshiwara is Edo’s red light district. Hana looks aghast when she realizes that she is in the past, this is Edo era. To Hana’s surprise, a man grabs her arm and tells her to quickly bring her to a place where she receives her customers. Hana decides to quickly run away right now for things will be dangerous if this keeps up. She’ll just have to think of the details later on.
