Last Game [Chapter 33]

And, summer break is finally over, the second half of the school term has started. By the courtyard, Yanagi and Yoshida are talking about the attendance regarding a certain subject. Yanagi notices Kujou passing by and calls out to her. She looks tense. He asks her if she had already decided on her subjects, like basic subjects such as Economy II. Startled Kujou exclaims that she already talked about this [/decided on this] with Fujimoto. And, Kujou quickly runs off. The two guys are aghast for after the fireworks, Kujou’s fluency in language is rapidly declining. To Yanagi’s shock, Souma blames him for continuously forcing Kujou from behind. Yanagi exclaims in disbelief and blames Souma. Souma shouts back that he is maintaining a suitable distance with her. As those two continues to quarrel, Yoshida thinks the two have a good relationship. By the bulletin board, Kujou thinks that she couldn’t help running away. After the fireworks, there is always something wrong with her and aside from becoming nervously with Souma, she is very afraid when Yanagi sees her distracted. “In Yanagi’s eyes, what am I [to him]. How does he regard me. How come my mind is filled with this kind of things.” She looks at her cellphone and wonders if it is too early to go to the club and she can read some more books [there]. Then, she sees Souma. She asks him what’s up and isn’t he going in. “Who are you waiting for?” She freaks out when he says that he is waiting for her. “..can’t I.” Kujou mutters that it isn’t like he can’t. And, at the same time, Yanagi suddenly stands up from his class for his Kujou sensor is acting up and he felt that he was a bit slow in acting so he should go. Back to the two, Kujou couldn’t act the same as before even if Souma told her, too. Souma sweatdrops for Kujou is walking stiffly like a soldier. Kujou apologizes and says that it seems that she couldn’t relax a bit. Souma says no, actually, seeing her like this is very ‘fresh’ [/new] and he thinks that it is very cute. Kujou freaks out for Souma won’t say that kind of words and usually, he would just stare at her and asks what’s up with her. Kujou really wants to run away but she can just bear this a bit during the club for there should be some people inside.. And, no one is inside the club room. Kujou quickly excuses herself and says that she’s going to buy some drinks. Souma just sighs.
By the vending machine, Kujou buys her drink and thinks that this is tiring for she couldn’t stay there and what should she do. She thinks that he doesn’t say those kind of things from the start and if she goes back, Yanagi would probably also come. It is only just going in the club room yet for the first time, she felt unwell [/couldn’t bear it]. When she goes there before, she felt quite happy and it makes her feel worry-free. It seems that it had unknowingly changed. She hates it and how come things can’t be the same as before. She wishes that it won’t change forever. Holding a box of [sliced] cakes, Yanagi thinks that he obviously wanted to entice Kujou but unexpectedly, he can only think of eating. He muses that this is also the safest method and it isn’t like his brain couldn’t think of something better but rather, according to experience, this method is highly effective. Then, Tachibana sees Yanagi and they head to the club together. Tachibana greets him and asks what’s up since he came from outside.. Tachibana freezes as she recalls Souma asking she ought not to truly like Yanagi. Yanagi tells her that he went to buy some cake. While Tachibana is blaming Souma for saying too much before, Yanagi asks her what cake does she likes. She tells him fruit tart. Yanagi tells her that she’s lucky for he happened to buy that and there is also, cheesecake, etc. Tachibana looks at him and recalls him telling her that starting from 10 years ago, he has always been chasing after Kujou as if his life depended on it. In the clubroom, their activities will be fall festival on November and then, year-end party on December. Fujimoto tells them that after fall festival, the third years will retire. Yoshida and another guy scream that the wretched job search will start. Souma asks if he isn’t going for postgraduate [/research] studies. Yoshida says that he isn’t that good and he isn’t studying with the goal to be a postgraduate student since it isn’t fun. Tachibana tells everyone that on the first day of next month, their school will have a school festival so if everyone can, they all go together to have fun. Yoshida gladly wants to go. Yanagi glances at Kujou who is reading at the corner of the table. He calls her out and holds up the box of cake to her. Using his ‘feed attack’, Yanagi tells her that this is her favorite cheesecake. She asks him why he suddenly.. Yanagi tells her to quickly eat up and won’t her face be filled with happiness when she eats something.
Fujimoto exclaims what cakes are those. Yanagi says that everyone has one. Then, he gives the fruit tart to Tachibana who thanks him. Yoshida screams over how come Yanagi knows what Tachibana likes. While Kujou’s eyes widen over this, Yanagi tells Yoshida what he is talking about and just pick a cake. While thinking that her heart is going to.., Kujou recalls someone saying that just now, he saw Yanagi bring a drink to Tachibana, and no wonder it is Tachibana to be able to make Yanagi smile like that. Tachibana gives Kujou some tea. Kujou thanks her and mutters, “Your relationship with Yanagi is truly good.” Tachibana is as surprised as Kujou. Kujou suddenly says that she forgot to tell everyone something. She tells everyone that starting in autumn, she is going to double school [<- something like undergoing some specialization textual research to help out in her future career]. Fujimoto asks what she is going to study. While Yanagi looks surprised, Kujou says accounting and she got enough money for the training school during summer. Fujimoto comments that no wonder she has been working really hard during summer. Yoshida and friend comment that it isn’t easy to do a textual research while studying and no wonder she’s Kujou. Kujou tells Tachibana that she would want to go to their school festival and she’ll strive to find some time. She wishes Tachibana luck with the festival and Tachibana thanks her. Fujimoto says that she doesn’t know about this. She turns to Yanagi to ask if he knows. But upon seeing his shock expression, she realizes that he also doesn’t know. After bidding goodbye to the others, Kujou asks what’s up with Yanagi who is quiet and looking glum. He grumbles about not knowing a thing about the double school. Kujou tells him that it isn’t necessary to tell him. Yanagi thinks that it is that again, but she’s also right for they aren’t boy-girlfriend and he knows that Kujou isn’t doing something wrong. He knew that he only has to toss a question and she’ll be able to come up with an answer. But, how about telling him a bit of things, no matter what she’ll  just hide it inside and isn’t he a bit headstrong to think like that. He thinks it is just like that thing with Souma, if he wasn’t at the right place to hear Souma tell him about it, he definitely would still be in the dark right now. Kujou asks him what’s up. Yanagi says that nothing is up with him.
He quickly walks faster. Seeing him walking ahead, Kujou suddenly remembers him together with Tachibana. She quickly rushes to him. Holding his back, she calls out his name and tells him that upon joining the club, she got friends and she is truly very happy. “I believe that it is all thanks to you. You’re the one at my side, so I.. *Yanagi calls her name* --hey, will you always be my friend? You won’t change, right?” She looks at him and Yanagi says, “Friend?” He thinks that no matter when, he is truly just.. Yanagi says that she can talk, but he also knows she had a lot of hardships, she isn’t good in communicating, and he did think that it is possible for him to look after her and protect her. He corners her by the wall and says, “But, up to this point, even if I were to repress myself [/emotions] again, I also would want to lay a hand on you.” Kujou tells him that he’s too near. Yanagi says that obviously her face had become red like that, yet she can say such a thing. “—friend? You unexpectedly want me to be your friend forever. That is something that I cannot do.” Kujou looks at him. To his shock, Kujou starts to cry and tearfully says that it turned out that is what he thinks. Pale and aghast Yanagi quickly backtracks and exclaims, “Ah, I’m just kidding! I’m just kidding you. We are friends, right? We’re very good, right?” Thinking that her mental strength is weak, Yanagi helps her blow her nose on a handkerchief. Yanagi thinks that was very dangerous for they almost become not friends anymore. He tosses her into his car and offers to drive her home. At home, Miwa hears the sound of a car. She turns around to see that Kujou has come home. After some greetings, she asks Kujou if Yanagi brought her home. She says yes. Miwa asks her how come she didn’t ask him to come in. Flustered Kujou just mutters..ah..ya.. She snuggles to her puzzled mother who asks her what happened. Kujou says that in the end, it is the best to be with her mother and it’s very peaceful. In his car, Yanagi is lamenting over his inability to hold back. It has been nearly an hour since he is being depressed inside his car. He thinks that Kujou is definitely startled and his continuously concentrated effort in accumulating all this up to this point will.. Yanagi starts crying that Kujou is really hard to deal with, for if he didn’t push a little, she won’t notice and if he pushes, she’ll run away again.. Yanagi wonders how come, up to this point, she would.. Then, his cellphone rings. It is from Miwa.
Comment: And, Yanagi was pretty much at his limit there. I think it was pretty intense when Kujou asked him to be always her friend. With the pressure of Souma wooing Kujou, Yanagi is forced to say that he doesn’t want to be ‘forever friends’ though of course, that can be interpreted in two ways. He is serious and doesn’t want to ‘play friends’ forever, or he wants a different relationship. It seems that Kujou took it with the former and well, he seemed to have made a major mistake with that one. For Kujou to say that to her mother, it seems like she went back ‘to her shell’ or something where she is ‘safe’ from the possibility of changing relationships with someone whom she already have a happy relationship with. From how Kujou always want to run away, not only from Yanagi but in this chapter, also from Souma, it seems that there is something more bothering Kujou and it isn’t the plain ‘she’s clueless about love’. It does seem to be some sort of phobia since she really doesn’t seem to be able to ‘stand being in the place with a suitor alone’ especially if their actions are no longer ‘as friends’. It seems unconsciously since she doesn’t know why she is acting that way. And, for Kujou’s mother to call Yanagi, maybe we’ll get a better understanding of what’s really up with Kujou’s behavior. Even if she is already rejected, Tachibana is still playing her role as the ‘other rival’ to make Kujou uneasy and subtly jealous. It does seem that she really feared losing Yanagi but for Yanagi to say those things to her..ah, she might think that her mother is the only reliable person whom she can have a ‘stable-same forever’ relationship. Hm..is just something like ‘afraid of change’? Something connected to her father? Or, maybe like having a boyfriend will eventually make her leave her mother-type of thing? Anyway, we have three events to look forward to. Maybe by year end in their timeline, there will be a major progress with their relationship. Of course, Yanagi has to do some major damage control in the upcoming chapters =P Scans by 红莲汉

  1. Oh goodness gracious! I find Yanagi pitiful in many ways. But please mangaka-sama, don't let the pairing of Yanagi & Kujou be broke. Well, if she can this, right? Hahaha. But really. I don't want any pairing beside them. They're so cute in many ways. And you know, I think Kujou is really having those feelings yet she can't recognize it as love. She's like a dictionary more than a human, it seems. But well, I really hope she'll know the truth as soon as possible. It's also a matter of time before Yanagi will give up on her. I kinda felt it in some of his lines.

Well, thanks Kay for a very great summary!

True..maybe from this point, things are going to focus on them again.

Hm..ya, though it seems that she felt uneasy with their romantic-type of advances.

Ya..it seems like he is getting exasperated for a moment there.

    3. I really wish Yanagi will find his courage to confess. Huhu. I think that Souma's approach is better than of Yanagi. I hope Yanagi will face his fear of rejection. It's the only thing that's stopping him, I think.

    4. Maybe, but I cannot say for sure since Yanagi, being supposedly good with girls, is already having difficulty with Kujou. It doesn't seem to be very simply resolved with a confession like what Souma did. Kujou is already starting to avoid Souma, too. If Yanagi did the same thing, it is possible that she might also really avoid him, too. I'm not too sure how much damage he has done to their relationship because of what he said/heavily hinted here.

I feel there is something more to it, as in, there is something up with Kujou that has to be resolved before someone goes confessing and then, she'll just fall in love/realize that it is love. Ah..okay, I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this and maybe, shrug, it is easily resolved with Yanagi confessing.

    5. Maybe. Woaahhhh!! I really wish that this manga is not updated only monthly. TT.TT

Yeah, btw, ummm, in your opinion, in what chapter will this manga end?

    6. Hehe..

      Hm..cannot say. If it ends with the two becoming together, maybe two more volumes? If each volume is around 6-7 chapters so 14 chapters? Well, it depends on how fast or slow the development...okay, it seems to be very slow. ^^;

  2. Damn it. Yanagi ! Do something ! You can't be just friends forever, or else Souma will wins. Anyway, I feel like Kujou has already something for Yanagi. She's just confused and in denial, right ?

Thanks Kat for the Translation. Namaikizakari next please. hihi *sorry for being demanding* ^^

      Hm..sorry, not yet..and it isn't a priority series.

  3. This girl has the biggest fight or flight response when faced with anxiety inducing situations. Her desire to avoid both guys has generalized to the club as well. Her way to reduce her anxiety is to bury her head in studying and 'refocus' on her end goal of helping her mom. She started doing this when had trouble sleeping due to thinking too much about things, she'd stay up late studying. I sort of wonder if she didn't say anything about this extra class to either Shiori or Yanagi because it's more of a reaction to the stress and a way to stick her head in the dirt and avoid everything going on in her life.

    1. I agree that Kujou has the biggest fight or flight response and she does have the tendency to focus on studying whenever she feels confused about things (probably because she wants to go back to something that is 'simple' since like she said in chapter 8, in studying 'you get out as much as you put in') but I don't think that she didn't say anything about the double school to Shiori and Yanagi because she wants to enroll to cope up with stress. If she doesn't plan on letting them know about this then she shouldn't have brought the topic in the club room in the first place. Also, it's not like it was a sudden decision that just sprung up because Souma suddenly confessed and she's experiencing an emotional roller coaster. The morning after Kujou got sick, she had a conversation with her mother that she can't miss work because she's saving up for the prep school period (予備校代) then her mother said "I already told you I'll pay for it." Her mother won't say "already told you" if she just knew of it that time, right? Plus, she doesn't look surprise that Kujou plans to go to a prep school which only means that she already told her plans to her mother before.

      Delete
    2. Hm..good analysis, and it does seem that way.

As for not telling either of the two, is it possible that she wanted to be able to get into that extra class = have money for it, before telling anyone about it?

      Delete
    3. Oh! Good find anon. You're right, they did say that.

I wonder if Yanagi will follow her again to this other prep school or not. Not sure how prepared he could be if he did try it.

  5. I can relate to Kujou's trauma. She lose her father when she was young right? I am sure she saw how her father's death affected her mother, and herself. She is afraid to feel that "lose someone" feelings. My mother died when I was 15 and left me with 3 siblings. I admitted it wasn't easy. When my mother died, I feel the other half of me was gone. I started to stop dating, and decided to be friends with everyone so if they leave me and it wouldn't hurt much as my mother's death. I was scared to feel again. Thats probably what Kujou feel. Anyway, thanks for the summary! <3 Tika

  6. Aww man now shes going to go to Souma for counsel on what Yangi said, and Souma will undermine him for it and get even closer Kujou. But Yanagi has moma bear on his side witch is a huge pluss. I wonder were the writer will go with the story so far.

Ps Thanks for taking your time to summarize the chapter of this manga and others as well.

    1. I doubt that she will be going to Souma. He sort of shattered her trust when he confessed, which is evidenced in this chapter as she is not very comfortable around him anymore since he's acting different. Pretty sure either Mama is going to finally step in or Yanagi is going to have to do it himself. Both of which are good.

      Delete
    2. Hm..just like what Anonymous[2] mentioned, I don't think she will go to Souma since she is starting to feel uneasy with him because of his 'romantic view' towards her unlike before when it is more as 'friends'. True, it seems that her mother is going to help Yanagi out.

      Thanks for reading them ^-^

  7. I think Yanagi he feels uneasy because he doesn't want to give up but also go to next step. When I read this finish I feel I were Yanagi. It's like broke up ,but you know you can't know another feeling it's impossible . You just look from acting from her if she ignores you and doesn't say "I like you" ,you think she's interested you ? It cause me crazy. - - Just in my opinion.

    Thank you, Kat!

    1. Hm..Edj..not sure if she will react positively over that. With these little things, Yanagi is already rocking the boat so just imagine if there is a deep kiss.

Yup, hopefully this won't be dragged too long.

      You're welcome ^-^

    2. Edj, I agree with Kat. Remember what happened back in chapter 27? It was just a kiss in the forehead and Kujou reacted strangely to that. This just caused her to avoid Yanagi. And also I don't feel that this manga is the same as the other shoujo mangas (having a guy suddenly kissing a girl and the girl falling in love with him). This story is very innocent (so for me). And I don't think Yanagi will force himself to Kujou. He really treasures her. If he didn't know that Kujou has some kind of romantic feeling for him and if she will have to fall for another guy, I think Yanagi's approach will be different. He's kind of guy who prioritizes Kujou's happiness first before himself. I just have the vibes that he's like that. Maybe this is why this manga is so popular.

  9. Thanks for translating this!

Like you said, Kujou's fear of change may have something to do with her father. And because of this fear, maybe Kujou is not a fan of the idea of dating someone because seeing Yanagi go out with his past girlfriends and breaking up after a short period of time (the last one only lasted for 3 days right? so much for a romance), there is nothing more unstable than going out. They both look pitiful in this chapter but I think (and I also hope) that it's just a matter of time before this thing is sorted out. I don't want this to drag for so long because want them to hurry up and be together so badly. Looking forward to the next chapter~

True..though I think there's more to it than Yanagi having girlfriends before because she is starting to want to avoid Souma, too. Actually, if this is the reason, Kujou might only want a guy who never had an interest with any other girl before.

      Ah..we can only hope.

  11. Thank you very much for your efforts on translating/summarizing this.
    You're awesome! ;)

Let's see... golly.. I don't know what or how to react on this but really... I understand Yanagi's suffering.. T_T Sometimes... if you're in his shoes, it is hard for his role to keep his "promised" challenge to her.
But at the same time, I'm pretty impressed on how much he truly "loves" Kujou despite of of her shortcomings. Actually, I already expected on how Yanagi will react to Kujou, about them being friends. It's really hard.

Seeing him cry... well, I dunno.... I'ts breaking my heart. T__T I just hope everything will be alright on the next chapter. It's giving me mixed emotions. I don't know what to expect from this development. -sigh-

And also ...I think its a great opportunity for Kujou's mother to do something(?) between those two because you know, she's one of the primary reason why Kujou acting this way.

  12. thank you sooo so much for feeding my addiction. Love reading your summaries.

maybe Kujou has to get drunk and express her true feelings to Yanagi like how he kissed her in chp 27. I think she normally uses textbooks to understand stuff. since love is an experience interaction she is confused. Being drunk the heart will take over for her. ^_^

  14. I dont think the mangaka will make yanagi confess first. Coz the title says it, the last game. And yanagi stated that he will win this time, after tasting endless defeat for like a decade. Lol.
i just hope our clueless cute kujou will find out that she is in love. Sighs.

    And btw, amazing summary, kat-chan.

I know that its not my place to say, but i would advice you to use paragraphs or at least some spaces between topics to topics (like i do here) so the readers wont get confused where were they reading.

And then.. you're good in chinese? What about japanese? Are you good at japanese too? I can read japanese, but im not that good yet. Kanjis are hard. Lol. As for chinese.. its number two aside from japanese lol.

Hm..I am using paragraphs. Each paragraph is separated by a picture. Usually around 4 paragraphs per summary depending on the length. A paragraph is around 20-30 lines. But I guess you mean..chop them up even more? So far, unless you are not the one who tagged about this recently, you are the first one to complain about it in my whole 10+ years of writing summaries. I'll consider it..by asking the other readers if they also have the same problem.

Thanks for reading them and bookmarking ^-^ Thanks for the comment ^-^

Not really..my Chinese isn't that good..still not there, even after 10+ years of learning it just to be able to read manga. No, I'm not good in Japanese..almost zero knowledge. Well, kanjis are Chinese characters basically..so when it is written in Japanese, I can make a guess about it.

    2. I also used to think that if Kujou will not the one who will confess first then Yanagi will lose the last game but thinking about it again, if you will re-read the third chapter, the last game is not really about Kujou confessing first; it is about Yanagi making Kujou realize her feelings for him (if the English translator's got it right). So technically, even if Yanagi will be the one to confess first, as long as Kujou will realize that she is in love with him, Yanagi will still win. I think the idea that Yanagi will lose the last game if he will confess first came from Yanagi overhearing a guy saying that "the one who falls in love first is the loser" in chapter 1. But Yanagi DID fall in love with her first so he already lose in the-first-to-fall-in-love-is-the-loser "game" (if you would like to call it that). When he kept on saying that she should confess first or he won't be satisfied is just his pride and stubbornness talking, it has nothing to do with what the real last game is.

    4. Well, I read all comments and reply to them since it is a personal decision to do so if someone bothered to comment, nayuki/Kazamasa.

Not offended..though it is really the first time someone mentioning it. ^^;; And I'm actually considering. Well, I can only make the paragraph a bit shorter by halving it but more than that..sorry, I couldn't do more than that. It has always been one paragraph then picture. Chopping it more would require more pictures and editing those pictures would take more time.

Well, if it is simple but I'm still dependent on a Chinese-English dictionary. I cannot summarize without it. ^^; So, it really takes a long time already rather than just look at the Chinese and translate it to straight English. Especially since I work on this in detail = lengthy summary, so it takes a long time. It is a bit faster now than say, 10 years ago. ^^;; Of course, these days, I'm busier than before.

    5. That's right, michiru. Actually, this series is suppose to end in chapter 3 but because of its popularity, it became a series so that happened after chapter 3.

Good point..it depends if the 'last game' is who fell in love first or who confessed first though I always thought that it is the 'one who confessed first'. Yanagi doesn't seem to consider that he had already lost so admitting it in words is the only one that counts for him, I think.

    6. No, you dont have to edit more.pics.
The pic is.fine, and the paragraph is fine by the.pic separating them.
But i mean, the paragraph, you should have some lines and ''enter button''.them, not like a paragraph which keeps on typing.forward without line spaces.. or just do enter.button them. i didnt.mean That you have to chop them off then make more.pics..

Each paragraph is fine, but the paragrah should have some space to separate them. Ah, i'll just make an example tomorrow wth ur summary so you get it. Lol im not very good in english yet, so im kinda hard to explain this one..

    7. Yes, I know what you mean but I'm sticking with my format of paragraph then picture. I don't like 2-3 lines then break line, 2-3 lines then space. Sorry, as I've mentioned, it is only up to this point wherein I'll oblige. This is the part where I'll be stubborn with and I'm not going to do anymore changes.

A few are already fine with the shorter paragraph. While most are okay with the usual. So, it's only you who have the problem.

So, how about copying and pasting the summary to a word editor then you just press 'enter' after the part you read so that you won't be confused? ^^

  17. I don't think my heart can take this anymore ;_;. Part of me just wants Yanagi to disappear and quit for a while to accelerate this story because my feelings are being torn out.
