Skip Beat [Chapter 229]

Saena says that she even didn’t thought of becoming her mother that from the time she is born, she is a person who refuses to touch Kyouko. Kyouko wonders if it is because she really hates her. She tightly holds her hand. She thinks that from the time she is young, no matter if she is detested by her or hated by her, she already have that awareness. “Even the psychological barrier of my existence being denied- is already prevailed over. *Kyouko crying to Ren and being given the infinity Love Me stamp* -right now, even if I am made to hear something, I also won’t be struck down again.” After a pause, Kyouko asks if it is because she hates her. Kyouko looks at her scowling mother then looks down on her tea cup. Saena says that it is because she is afraid of hurting her. This made Kyouko look up to her mother. Kyouko asks if it is psychological [abuse = hurting her?]. Saena hmphs and says that Kyouko must feel that it is too late [for that], right. “That is inevitable. At that time..you were constantly crying at one side and chasing behind me at the other side..”
There is a scene of Kyouko crying to Saena not to throw her away. Kyouko thinks then it is on the body [physical abuse?]. “Inside, there is no sufficient news of the difficult past or perhaps, *gulps* there is..actually, a sufficiently shocking ‘difficult past’--..!!!” There is a scene of Kyouko with Kanae. Saena says that everything is Atty. Katagiri’s ‘best way’ decision. “And he introduced me to the Fuwa family and make you live at Fuwa-san’s house. It is to protect you who is with [/beside] me.” Kyouko stiffens and thinks, “No!!! For real!!! Evacuation system!!? Is the situation that bad, up to that kind of degree!!?” After snapping out of it, Kyouko asks about Atty. Katagiri. She thinks that isn’t that the ‘make you laugh crocodile-faced lawyer’..? Eh!? Kyouko asks, “Why, Croc..Atty Katagiri would..” Saena says, “..Yayoi, Shou-kun’s mother, is Atty Katagiri’s younger sister.” Kyouko is mentally freaking out for it is totally not the similar. [<- Yayoi and Katagiri] Kyouko mutters that she never once saw him [at the Fuwa’s].. Saena says that she shouldn’t have seen him for generally speaking, there is no one who would frequently go to a married relative and besides that place is also a business shop.
Kyouko thinks ah, is that so, then lady owner’s former surname is Katagiri. Saena says that besides, what’s more important is even if Atty Katagiri would visit the Fumas, he would also avoid her because just upon seeing him, Kyouko will definitely cry for she is like that when she is young. “It is like someone is going to take your life that you’ll wail like some lament.” She totally couldn’t remember it so Kyouko can only apologize for that. Kyouko thinks but it totally feels that she can understand that it isn’t ‘it is like’ rather, it is really feeling like ‘going to be eaten’ for the the infant Kyouko. “It is possible that the first time I saw Crocodile-faced lawyer on the television, my heart is seizing up in pain is also because of this..” Flashback: While watching television with the Daruma couple, Okami said that person is also in the news yesterday. The TV announcer introduced almost becoming a regular team, Making people laugh crocodile-faced lawyer, Atty Katagiri Kenichi—  While some kid is crying on the television, Kyouko thought that he looks very scary. And she felt a seizing pain. End flashback.
Kyouko feels a seizing pain just by recalling that. Kyouko starts thinking that in the homepage of the law firm, she is indeed very shocked to learn that Katagiri is this person’s boss but she thought that it is someone whom she saw for the first time on the television. “Unexpectedly, I saw him so many times before. Besides, I even received a lot of kindness from him.. –it’s truly an inconceivable fate--.. This also a fragment that molded the current ‘me’. Perhaps, at some corner of the past that I didn’t know, there is still a discarded blank fragment that didn’t change me into my current self. I cannot think like that--!!! *Saena is startled when Kyouko suddenly slams her head on the table* Besides!! As if that fragment, that can dye brilliant colors and change shape, still survives [/exists] Then, my future dream can also have a bigger change-something. Absolutely cannot have this greed--!!! *grimacing while holding her head* That is about wanting this person to talk out about my birth!! That is making this person dig up the root and revealing the inside story of this person which is like a landmine-type of dramatic past..!!...
...How can I!! For my personal gain and personal desire, opening up someone’s scar [/remaining trauma]-something!! She It has already been said to be a ‘land mine’ that and my birth is definitely something that isn’t a good thing for her!! Even if I asked, there also won’t be some useful information!! But..wasn’t there a proverb saying about better to make youth eat bitterness [/suffering]--!!! [<- the whole proverb is actually translated like this ‘Heavy work in youth is quiet rest in old age.’ Basically, it means that after suffering while young, one will be more experienced and probably can deal with problems compared to someone being spoiled while young] compared with playing around at present, and caring about the more distant benefit. Ah ah ah Besides, the fact is that idiot made me taste bitterness and right now, it also has a result [/purpose]..” Saena calls out to her and says that Kyouko has something in mind so she came to look for her today, right. As Kyouko looks up to her, Saena says that she should have not only come to say thank you to her for giving birth to her- that type of talk, right. “If you have something to say, don’t dilly-dally and quickly say it clearly.”
Kyouko quickly sit up straight and immediately got rid of her dilly-dallying mode. While thinking that it isn’t something that she can say after being told to say it, Kyouko says, no..about that.. Saena says that she has that right. “It is okay, whatever you think, whether it is what you want to say and what you want to ask. I won’t refuse [to answer]. Ever since then, I always haven’t done something that a ‘mother’ should do. So right now, whatever you wish, I’ll do my utmost ability to satisfy you. That is my inevitable bounden duty.” Kyouko thinks ah..yes..she also doesn’t have any expectation and she also knows that what Saena said should be that kind of meaning. Kyouko says, “..even if what I want to know is something that it will make your heart’s wound ache dully. ..is it also okay..?” Saena says that if it is her wish “but, perhaps you also won’t be intact.” [<- probably meant Kyouko won’t be unaffected by it] Kyouko says that there’s no problem, she already prepared herself [/have awareness]. Saena closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
Flashback: Saena opens her eyes to see the office. With wide eyes, she immediately thinks that it is bad, could have she dozed up a while ago. After rubbing her eyes, she looks at her watch. It is 12:25am. She thinks that it seems that she only slept for around 10 minutes. “This is no good. I have to properly pull myself together!!” She slaps her face and opens the drawer to find her eye drops. She is startled when the door opens. It is Fujimichi. He says that it turns out that she’s still here.. Then, Saena looks at a take-out bowl of oden on her table. While her stomach is growling, she says ..that..this..this is.. Fujimichi says that it is because if she started to bite into work, that biting of her lip in order to eat, just makes her forget to leave work. “You should also bend your ear to listen to that sound that makes people feel sorrow.” <- referring to her stomach growling. Looking at Fujimichi drinking some coffee in a can, Saena thinks that he is in casual outfit, could it be that he already went home but still particularly came back to give her a gift.
Saena thinks then she’ll do as he says as her sincerest form of respect. She puts her hands together and says itadakimasu. While Saena is eating, Fujimichi tells her that she is a bit excessively apprehensive. “It is alright since you’re not alone in making Yamaguchi patch up the remaining loopholes. During the public trial, it isn’t your fight alone. Even if due to her [Yamaguchi] original plan of “must go back to her hometown’ after the ‘Jou’ public trial” has been shifted to an earlier date so perhaps, it make you feel pressured and is making this thing more difficult for you but from how bystanders look at it, this can be very rude to Fukuda [guesswork from 福田] who is the oldest so depend more on him a bit. Easily and steadily doing his work, it can be said that he is a capable person.” Saena nervously says that she isn’t saying at all not to depend on them but she actually doesn’t want to hold everyone back. “Except for this reason, there is still this outcome that will approximately be Katagiri’s promotion...
...Thinking of this.. Even if my strength is insufficient but no matter what, I want to contribute my strength. I’m always thinking that I must make this ‘Jou’ problem, which is a tangled and complicated situation, as well as the [legal] battle’s progress, to flow towards making everything thoroughly clear.” Fujimichi says that this is a firm conflict that exceeds 5 years and besides there is still war about the inside information’s complicated ‘special permit’. “Apart from the battle situation ‘special permit’, it is also necessary to have knowledge about nut products so it is very exhausting. While sipping her soup, Saena thinks that honestly speaking from where did it got drilled into a dead end..first of all, if she cannot remember the specialized terminology, then she won’t be able to accurately understand the situation. Looking at the calendar which shows that it is April 6 on that day, Saena thinks that obviously there is only a week before the public trial.. Looking at scowling Saena, Fujimichi says that it would be good if he can join this group.. Saena puts down her bowl and says that is so.
Turning to face him, Saena says that she thought that this is a question that she cannot inquire of him so she always didn’t ask but from the start, she has this question. “How come someone like Fujimichi-san, this outstanding talented person isn’t a member of the ‘Jou’ project?” Puzzled Fujimichi says that wasn’t this question already directly answered by sensei [/boss; probably Katagiri] before. Flashback 2: Katagiri said that regarding becoming a promoted member when there is this proposed request, he refuses. While standing beside scowling Saena, Katagiri points at Fujimichi who is speed typing and says, “I don’t want to bear the same destiny with that freak.” [<- I think that whoever are in Katagiri’s team for the Jou project will be promoted along with him to Tokyo. So, he probably doesn’t want to work with Fujimichi since he considers him a freak] End flashback 2. Saena is speechless that she says that Katagiri is joking at that time, right. Fujimichi says no, for he thinks that sensei seriously said that. Saena is speechless again. She couldn’t believe it for how can one be fooled by such a silly reason.
Fujimichi calls out to her and tells her not to force herself. “Calm down and go do it like your normal self then there’s no problem. On that day, I’ll also go to the court. Although I have to wait until my own work is finished then, I’ll be able to go--..” After looking surprised, Saena looks at him and says, okay. After a few days, there are some women meeting with each other, a couple of guys talking with each other and an old man talking on the phone in the streets. Misonoi calls out to Saena and says that he thinks that she is getting more and more exhausted. With some eyebags, sleepy Saena snaps out of it and apologizes. She slaps her face and assures him that she is fine. She wonders if her expression a while ago is very strange. Misonoi says that it always felt that lately, it seems that she is very exhausted and could it be that she has been assigned to a major lawsuit. Saena says yes even if it can be said that as the appearing main defense lawyer’s.. “But because there is also a core expectation that I have taken upon myself..”
Misonoi says that the sensei-s [lawyers] at his workplace are also loaded with several cases but they aren’t like Sae-chan, as if she is going to quickly burnout when obviously, she is comparatively young so it’s so strange. Glaring at him, Saena says that she..lately sometimes is that like that’s all..and she is doing good self-management.. Misonoi looks at her and says is that so.. Then, he smiles and says, okay, today, they are going to stop the food trip today. He suddenly stands up that it surprises Saena. While Saena calls out to him to wait a bit, she wonders what is this, how can he hastily decide by himself and go back on his own and actually, is it really alright! Misonoi says that they won’t be going, instead they’ll go eat at his place. This surprises Saena. At Misonoi’s place, Misonoi gives Saena her share of a bit spicy clam and broccoli pasta but today since she looks quite tired today so he pressed a bit more spice compared to before. Saena thanks him. Misonoi says that there’s no need. Saena says that because when he cooked for her before, she also felt that it is very delicious.
There is a scene of Misonoi carrying some grocery bags and saying that this time, as thanks for the mock exam, let him cook for her. Saena says so she already thought of really wanting to eat it again. Carrying some drinks, Misonoi says that it’s really great that he wasted time practicing and he can only cook this kind of stylish cuisine. “Here, Sae-chan, want some Oolong tea.” Saena thanks him. After they itadakimasu together, Saena enjoys the pasta and talking with Misonoi.  Later on, after some dessert, Saena’s sight starts to become blurry. Rubbing her eyes, Saena says that it feels unexpectedly..[she's] immediately going to..sleep. Misonoi says, really? “No matter how I see it, Sae-chan is very exhausted. I think that your stomach is so full that you’ll want to sleep. It is really great that you’ve come to my house to eat. Sae-chan, go sleep first for today, okay.” Very sleepy Saena can only see a blurry image of Misonoi. As her head is already leaning on the table, Saena thinks that it is no good, because there are still four days left before the public trial.. Then she sees a blurry Misonoi reaching out his hand towards her then she has fallen asleep. Misonoi says, “-good night, Sae-chan--” The next chapter will be out in Japan on November 20th.
Comment: Ah, there are a lot of theories that can be formed here. Let’s say that Misonoi is up to no good since that good night seems ominous. From what was mentioned, Saena seems to have successfully tutored Misonoi to pass the mock exam that he cooked for her before. It is already April so it is safe to say that this is the time she got pregnant. If a month is lacking, we can say that Kyouko is a premature baby. So, if that hand reaching out to Saena is her last memory of Misonoi, then that might be the reason why she feared being touched by Kyouko who has Misonoi’s blood. I’m not sure how much is depended on Saena regarding the Jou project but it must be a lot that she is overburdening herself about it. I can imagine that they lost the case which is probably mostly because of her and probably whatever Misonoi did to her after she fell asleep. So, some Chinese readers pointed out, she associates Kyouko touching her = losing a case (chapter 224). I think that he drugged her and it’s probably in the oolong tea. So, assuming that he did, why would Misonoi do that? I’m sure it isn’t just because he wanted Saena to get some rest.

It was mentioned that he is indeed working at a law firm so could it be he is going to steal some documents or make her miss the trial so that they’ll win the case that is if he works for the prosecution or the other party of the lawsuit? The latter seems impossible since there is still four days unless he kept on drugging her for four days and more. Again, it depends on they’ll fail the case without Saena. I’m not sure if Saena carries her files and other important documents out of the office. It isn’t like there is a smartphone at that time that Misonoi can hack into it. It is possible that Misonoi is just hired by the other firm/party because Fujimichi did mention that it isn’t his real name. I’m sure they did try to track him down later on. I wonder if there is a spy within that leaked out that the one the other party must target is Saena. So, there is also a possibility that he had raped her but then, normally, why would he when they are already doing it. Is it to traumatize her enough so that she cannot work on the case? It is because she mentioned to Kyouko that telling her about it would affect her so surely, it won’t affect Kyouko if it is just because Saena got tricked that she lost a major lawsuit or getting pregnant because she has been doing it with someone whom she knew for a few months. So, being the product of rape, would that affect Kyouko?

So, from what we learn, I can assume that Misonoi did something bad that made Saena lose the case. She must had been pressured afterwards to finally succeed in the next major case to make it up to Katagiri so she refuses to have any association with Kyouko during that stressful time. So, Saena is angry that Kyouko took on a lot from Misonoi being not as good as her in studies, can cook <- slapping away the knife when Kyouko is cooking (chapter 227; probably to make her mom happy since she seems to like to a foodie), and probably act <- Misonoi is acting that he loves her just to deceive her. Definitely, it isn’t because Saena is pregnant that they lost the case for it will probably take 1-2 months before she realizes it. The trial is just starting in 4 days..unless it is because Saena is pregnant and having a difficult time which causes her to fail in her job but still, Fujimichi says that there are others who’ll help her out. Anyway, since Saena refused to touch her from the time Kyouko was born, that would make Yayoi as the one who brought Kyouko up. I would think that she had indeed brought up Kyouko as her own daughter so she wanted Kyouko to be her real daughter by making her as her daughter-in-law. No wonder Saena tends to spoil Katagiri, she owes him a lot. I do wonder if Fujimichi has some sort of grudge against Katagiri that he is making Saena stop spoiling him =P

Nevertheless, I would assume that later on, Fujimichi got into the team so they all got promoted and transferred to Tokyo. Saena’s situation here somewhat reminds me of Kyouko’s. They were too in loved and focused at someone else, and they didn’t notice the other one beside them who is also helping them out. Actually, I think Fujimichi is also very observant with Saena but I guess he isn’t exactly cute and affectionate like Misonoi. Lastly, when Kyouko is thinking about seeing Katagiri for the first time on the television but it turns out that she saw him many times before, and about a certain piece of the past that can change things and dye brilliant colors, it made me think, ah, just wait till she learns who Ren really is ^^ Anyway, since this mangaka is unpredictable, perhaps the cliffhanger isn’t the one that caused Saena’s trauma but something else. But for Misonoi to do something bad to her, I would really think it is very likely based on how she’s reacting to Kyouko and it doesn’t seem like just because of having a child out of wedlock though I’m not sure if one would act like that merely because of losing the case but who knows. Hopefully, we’ll know already by the next chapter. Scans by 红莲汉

    1. Hehe..seems unlikely, kouya. She seems very naive and everything at this stage. Not too sure if just because of that, she ended up this way and treated Kyouko that way.

No, Yamaguchi is the one who has to go to her hometown asap. She did mention that she's leaving in the last chapter. Probably because of some family affair or something so her work has to be done by Saena so she is very pressured and stressed.

      You're welcome ^-^

  8. maybe Misonoi is not kyoko father ( that why she say it will effect kyoko) and she did not now who is for example
if Misonoi did some bad thing maybe he take photo or video on her with other after he drug her to blackmail her for some reason

and kyoko remind her of Misonoi betrayed and that she dirty .

    1. If he's not the father, why would the mangaka bother introducing him as a seemingly important person in Saena's life? But then, maybe it is possible like she lost the case and gone drinking then got raped/had sex with someone she doesn't know who somehow was using a fake name?

      Hehe..possible.

Well, there was Ren in one scene there, AR ^^

  9. Hi Kat,

Thanks so much for the summary.

I have a quick comment. Rape has nothing to do with sex, it is about power and control. So the comment "why would he [raped her] when they are already doing it" is completely wrong and a dangerous statement to make.

One, I was raped, and from my personal experience it was about forcing someone to do an sexual act. I also work with rape victims. Two, most people are raped by someone they know and not a stranger. Three, spouses and romantic partners can rape the person they are in a relation with.

It is a common fallacy that rape does not happen in relationships-it does (whether the people are sexually active or not). Many people are ignored by the police, friends, family, and judges/court system when they tell them that their spouse or their boyfriend or girlfriend raped them. We need to change this mentality.

No hard feelings, but I wanted and needed to write this, even if it is just to spread the word.

    Again, thanks! :)

    1. I think what was meant here wasn't so much that being in a relationship dismisses the possibility of rape but that it's illogical since both parties are willing to consent under normal circumstances so why go through the trouble of drugging and taking advantage of Saena? However, rape is entirely illogical and a senseless act and I'm sorry you had to experience it.

    2. Hi,

So, "[rape] it's illogical since both parties are willing to consent under normal circumstances" is still wrong and a dangerous statement. Even if a couple (married or dating) has sex regularly or daily, whether or not abuse was ever present before, no matter how long or short in time the couple has been together, or any other possible scenarios you or anyone can think of rape still happens in relationship. Even if the couple has always has regular/constant consent sex before and even earlier that day.

The team at the rape center I volunteer at educates women (unfortunately men rarely comes in) who have been raped, and a part of that education is teaching them the latest research on rape, what I stated is proven by research.

The scene in this chapter is very realistic and unfortunately common-even in the fact that the majority of rapes are planned.

My comment above still stands. If you disbelieve me please call your local rape center information office and discuss it with them and then please please share it with others.

Again, thanks for sharing your concerns about my statement. And again, Kat thanks for the summary, I appreciate your hard work and I will happily continue to read!

Btw, what I wrote here or above was not meant to make Kat feel bad nor was it to shame her or anyone else who agreed with the comment. :)

    3. Rape is unlikely under the assumption that whatever bad Misonoi did was related to the upcoming trial. Saena is just a junior member of the team headed by Katagiri, so anything that's done to her shouldn't affect the case. It's not like Misonoi was trying to keep Saena under his thumb in their relationship, so the power equation doesn't come into it.

If Misonoi's actions are deliberate and related to the case, it's likely because Saena was bringing home documents to study up on the case and the team's strategy, and he wanted time to look at her papers or scan them in secret.

    4. Hi,

I am a little confused by your comment, it not really related to the earlier conversation. I was not talking about the manga, the only comment I made related to the manga is that the scene was realistic.

Now, in relation to your comment, in real life, the power and control wheel is vast and complicated, please look it up. Also, power and control counts in all rapes. If you want to discuss the manga, we can do it, but it not related to my original comment.

      Thanks :).

    6. Thanks for reading, Anonymous [1] ^-^

Hehe, I know that but I tend to have an impression that the rape happens when one person isn't in the mood for it but the other party wants it. So, if Misonoi wants it, he can easily make her agree to it. Why go to the extent of drugging her? Unless, he was thinking that she probably refuses to do it because she's tired so he resorted to it?

But when you mentioned 'power and control', is it possible that he wanted to 'show his power' by raping her because she is better in studies/passed the bar exam in one try? Maybe Misonoi is some crazy guy who hitch with brilliant upcoming female lawyers then destroy them by raping them as some sort of revenge since he is made to feel inferior by them.

Anyway, I don't mind. I welcome the input ^^ And, sorry to hear about what you experience and it's nice that you are helping others. Gambatte ^^

  10. Well... Saena seems wide awake until eating from Misonoi's food. Maybe he put some drug into her food/drink? Something colourless, tasteless. It exists users putting it the victim's drink, the victim lose consciuosness, and won't remember anything after wake up.
Poor Saena! Having a child from such an evil relationship! No wonder she refused to touch her child. But giving her to adoptive parents would have been a better choice.

Ah, Nakamura sensei is totally unpredictable when it comes to these things. Misonoi probably did put something in her drink. Man, so now we know how Saena met the Fuwa which means that Sho and Kyoko knew each other practically since birth. It's funny to imagine how Kyoko cried in fear when meeting Katagiri, I wonder who she clinged to since Saena refused to touch her. I hope this month passes by quickly, I can't wait to see what happens in the next chapter.

    1. That he's Corn? I think she would have mixed feelings. I would think that it won't be that of a negative reaction especially if the intention isn't bad. I mean, Misonoi probably lied to harm her mother. Shou lied and fooled her for his own benefit. Ren, even if he lied about it, he is still the same one who is always there for her.

    2. I agree with anon here. When I went to read the last chapter in English it revealed to me more that saena was already pregnant (I'm currently pregnant so I notice the symptoms more ;) sleepy, hungry, baby brain/forgetful, etc
So it might be that misonoi is about to do something that betrays her here.

  16. wow, quite a chapter. Answers are finally peeking their head around the corner. The sooner Kyoko's past is resolved the sooner Kyoko can move forward. What reaction will Pres. Lory have to all this? Did he already know when he talked to Saena before? I ask because his concern before they meet is significant. I know I'm skirting the main topic of this particular chapter, but one of the great things about Skip Beat is how one thing effects so many people. Nakamura Sensei interweaves these stories so beautifully I look forward to how this story arch ripples onto the next. Thanks for the fast translation. We all appreciate your efforts. 24. hm quite curious now thought the whole explanation would be just misonoi was fooling around with saena and when she got pregnant he left her....But now seems its gonna be like some spy movie plot lol.

So misonoi seems to be a spy from the other company so he approached saena got close,to steal info?

Still why drug her like this?I mean if she had any documents in her purse he could have stolen them any time...for example a day when she sleeping at his place etc ....Drugging her i do not see how it helps.

Maybe Saena just felt sleepy without been drugged?Remember she is pregnant working her a** off day and night is not so impossible for her to just fainting out at his place or something.

Also again what i do not understand is why saena keeps saying ''i do not want to hurt you'' etc etc...seems like she feeling guilty and blaming herself?

What if Misonoi turns out to be a good guy but saena thought he was a spy or something and drove him away without telling him she is expecting his child, and something bad happened to him? That would make sense for saena saying these stuff.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe She became angry for late from the audition, and broke with Misonoi, because he was the reason of her late? At least she blamed him for this? Knowing Saena, breaking with Misonoi was not the least peaceful one. Misonoi left, and either died after their break up, or married someone else before Saena recognized her pregnancy. Or Saena was just too proud to tell him about their child? Makes some sense...
But Saena didn't want Kyoko, didn't want to become her mother. She said, she hadn't have a child... I still think, Kyoko is not her biological daughter. Maybe Misonoi's, but not Saena's.
If Saena is really Kyoko's biological daugther, the shock of Saena had to be really big. Or else she could not deny her pregnancy and giving birth so thorougly, that forgeting having a child.
She didn't become a mother. She had never felt she is one. Watching your child as a stranger... trying to raise a child with these feelings... alone... Terrible.
Where were their family? Why wasn't there anybody to help her, and prevent this catastrophy? Even her boss recognized her failure, but not her family?
She was all alone and she was young, betrayed by everyone around her. No wonder, she is averse from everybody.

      Delete
    2. Maybe though I'm not sure Saena will bring her work home since she is already staying late at the office. Even if she did, shouldn't she have copies of it at the office...unless the other company only need to know their strategy for the case.

Well, that is the optimistic view. I think the 'don't want to hurt' is probably physical abuse..possibility of venting on Kyouko. That is why Kyouko mentioned about 'evacuation' so they have to stay at the Fuwas. I'm still thinking if they were with the Fuwas while Saena is pregnant or afterwards. Most likely before birth since she mentioned about not touching Kyouko...if so, who took care of Kyouko. I guess Yayoi took care of Kyouko and Shou at the same time.

Hm..since she doesn't want Kyouko, wouldn't it be better if she told Misonoi and make him take care of Kyouko? Hm..does thinking that he's a spy or something make her lose her own case?

  25. Very interesting chapter that finally shed some light on Saena. I disliked her a bit before, because it seemed she resented Kyouko out of the blue, but now I get from when she's coming from. I guess she doesn't love the fact that her daughter is a bit naive (as Katagiri points out in his mind in the previous chapter) and that she let Shou fool her to earn money for him after they run away together. In her annoyance, there is worry that Kyouko will end up like she did. I am sure deep down she feels a mother instinct towards her daughter, even of 1%. After all, it was her who brought Kyouko into this world, besides her father. I don't know what to say about Misonoi because from how it looks, he is Kyouko's dad. Saena didn't seem like the type of woman who would go out with anyone random, but this man showed patience and care that probably convinced her to be more open with him and trust that he would do no harm to her. We will have to see if this last thing will turn out to be true or wrong. As many have speculated, what if he used violence on her in orden to shake her before this important case? Typical psychopath behavior: act like the kindest person in the world and gain somebody's trust, then stab them in the back where they feel at ease and in control (obvs not outside). Who knows, my years of watching dramas are suggesting me that Saena's lawfirm may have done something towards him or his family in the past, so he is getting revenge through her who works there because she is young and not a cold witch like her colleague? Or simply put, he is a jerk. It wouldn't be the first time something like this is showcased and it has psychological meaning that a mother would resent her child just because it is a product of violence. Kyouko would mean failure in Saena's traumatized eyes, after all. Perhaps she gave her to Shou's family because they lived in a rural area and her daughter couldn't be found by her dad/couldn't be "contamined" by bad influences of the city. If you think about this, Kyouko's family history is an opposite reflect to Ren's. He was brought up in a wealthy environment, from parents who loved him but that didn't want to support his choice to become an actor and that caused him to be distressed when he first met Kyouko as Kuon.
Ah, I talked too much!!! As usual, thanks for your summary and we'll wait for Chapter 230 next month. :)

    1. I think Kyoko wasn't fooled into supporting Sho. She gladly did it only wanting to be loved in return. The break in their relationship came when she found out that Sho was purposefully using her and didn't care. With Kuon, his parents supported his journey into acting. His angst came from the industry itself. Directors expected him to be as gifted and experienced as his father, Kuu. It was a heavy burden, hence the alliteration of being in his father's shadow. The reference Corn gives is that his father's hands were too big and he couldn't fly freely. Meaning the fame of his father was holding down his own ability to succeed in the same environment. Not that it was a purposeful act by his father.

    2. Yup, Titty.

In a way, yes, it seems to be like that so she is annoyed with Kyouko.

True...hopefully, we'll know for sure what kind of person Misonoi really is and his major role on what happened afterwards.

As for Kuon, I don't think that they didn't support him. There is some other issue to it, too. There was the bullying and racial discrimination. Iirc, his parents just didn't notice it immediately until it is too late...I think they were busy with work, too.

      Thanks for reading ^-^

  26. Thanks, Kat! I don't know what to think yet!

It sure looks like he might have put something in her tea or food, but on the other hand if she's pregnant then she can definitely feel fatigued enough to just fall asleep anywhere. I frequently fell asleep after work while I was expecting. The idea that he's just using her to spy or get info on this super important case is very intriguing... it would totally make sense for her to feel completely betrayed, and hate him and his (their) daughter. On the other hand, I don't know how that would make her afraid of hurting her own daughter, unless it is two unrelated things. Maybe she mistakenly does something to hurt him irreparably, so she loses the father and is afraid to hurt Kyouko as well?

I hope we finally learn the whole truth next chapter! We'll see! :)

    Thanks again! :D

    1. You're welcome, squeaker ^-^

True. I'm thinking that probably it is more on not wanting to hurt her physically to vent her frustration or anger on Kyouko. She might not exactly like Kyouko but she isn't going to cross the line to do that.

Maybe..but the past Saena doesn't seem to be the type who'll hurt someone. She seems to be in love and even finding time to meet with Misonoi to eat when she is really needs to rest and sleep. I think it is also important at that time when she is somewhat lashing out on Kyouko..she is also on an important case that will promote her so she really doesn't want to have anything to do with Kyouko.

      Hopefully so ^^

Thanks a lot for this summary.
I'm really not sure whether Saena was drugged or fell asleep only because she's exhausted... Anyway, I do not think that the mangaka would go as far as talk about rape in Skip Beat ! It would be a much to dark and horrible act to include in this manga !

(⊙_⊙’) I think that could already be considered dark and horrible.. Anyway, with that and Shou's monopolizing shiz and Ren's past, this manga really does touch some pretty dark stuff. However, with the flow of the story, I'm also thinking that Nakamura-sensei is merely misleading us. I'm leaning more on the idea that Misonoi was a spy for the prosecution side of the case.. (゜-゜)

  28. Thank you so much for the summery! One I don't think that Seana and musino had had sex. There was no evidence to that/ In the precious chapter fujimachi noticed she was dating and possible falling in love. From what we can see Seana was more successful and smart. She was helping Musoni with studying and was considered very talented. I think he was secretly jealous and he wanted to take advantage of her. I don't think he is a spy. Her extreme reaction to kyoko can only be because she was raped.

Nakamura-sensei is spending so much time showing details of it, so i think its connected somehow. and with fujimachi, i think saena failed to deliver the case, but he was there and managed to salvage it somehow. thus, katagiri ended up having the promotion with fujimachi on his team, and decides to bring saena along coz he could understand her circumstance?

Hm..good point. I was always under the impression that the case ended quickly so there is a different case that Saena is working on when she refuses to be touched by Kyouko. Still, she mentioned that she won't fail again. Was it the same one? Did that case took years to win until Kyouko is about I forgot what age 5-7. It wasn't a surprise if Katagiri goes to visit, but then, why would Fujimichi also visit. It implies something more than being a simple colleague.

I would think that she had won the case later on so she also got promoted to Tokyo. I'm still not sure if it is at the same time with Katagiri and/or Fujimichi.

  37. The way Saena is pictured in the series as a "woman who gave birth to a child but not a mother" and as such a serious woman, I always thought it could be Kyoko was a child she had without getting married that ruined her reputation and then centuries later, we know about Misonoi and things kinda made sense... but now, i dont understand whats going on... I thought that was all but now theres some bigger mystery going on... if they really lost the case, why they were promoted anyway? its possible he could be a spy and wanted information but it only makes sense if it was a lie that he didnt pass the exam and actually worked for that other law firm all along...
I must sound awful but I dont get how they would exactly mend their relationship... Kyoko is a good person but to know 99% of her pain came from her mother and that it seems Saena doesnt change, its difficult to think theyll have an actual mother-daughter relationship.

    1. GoldenGluvzKJ2, I think they were promoted because of another case..after Kyouko was born and a few years older. My guess is it is around the time when she left Kyouko.

Actually, he can still work at a law firm without getting his license..just that, he isn't a 'proper' lawyer yet. Maybe he has connections to it so he got the job. It is also possible that being a spy is part of the job to get hired?

I'm not sure if the mangaka will aim for that. Or at least, it probably won't happen all of a sudden because of how Saena is. I'm somewhat sure that Kyouko would just understand her mother more then, probably move on with her life. And of course, no longer reacting badly whenever a topic about her mother is brought up.

    2. This just made me think. What if even Misonoi isn't even the bad person here. What if he passes his bar exam, her court case is going well until she faints and goes into labor. Then she wakes up in the hospital, tells Misonoi who races to the hospital only to be hit by a actor/stunt driver? Then Saena is afraid of herself causing Misonoi to be reckless and actors because they killed him.

I think Sensei is toying with us again as she has done in the past. And the next chapter might be directed at another character so we won't know what happened at this scene...

    Lol.

But I don't think she was raped. The hand reaching out could be him guiding her to rest in bed since she fell asleep at the table?
I think she was already pregnant and not know it. He ditched her after he garnered success and changed his name in the law industry? Hence, she bored a grudge indirectly at kyoko? Anyway, if it's a spy plot like others suggested then this manga's theme has gotten pretty dark and intense. I like skip beat being light RomCom but it seems Sensei is transitioning that way for a bang especially with Ren's bg and now Kyoko. Side note: Is Saena's co worker harboring feelings for her? If so, 18 years is a long time...could be one of those stories, "I'll watch/support you from the sideline until you are no longer bruised/tormented". But most likely they are good friends but I'm hoping! :) I didn't like Saena at first but she deserves her happy ending too.

It's possible though it does look menacing.

Hm..do people change their names in the law industry? I would assume that they don't so that one can check the law board exam for one's ranking and stuff like that.

For me, I'm fine with it because it gives the series depth and not just fluff. Actually, I like that it has everything in it like comedy, drama, romance, etc. ^^

Cannot say for sure but it seems that there is something to it. Ya, I'm somewhat leaning towards that but I guess it still depends on what really happened.

  40. Misonoi probably drugged Saena, took her work, and disappeared. Four days later, Saena loses the case (the prosecutors mysteriously knew everything), faints again, and wakes up in the hospital to find that she's pregnant. When she goes back to her office, she finds out that Misonoi was the prosecutors' spy. Although, shocked and hurt by the betrayal, Saena (blaming herself) tells Kitagiri what happened and apologizes for her naive behavior that cost them their case. Kitagiri, knowing Saena was the best in her class in law school, probably feels bad for her, and offers his sister's place to take care of Saena's unborn child. Saena probably suggests that she will get an abortion, but Kitagiri stops her because his sister is also pregnant and doesn't want an unborn child like his nephew to be killed. He probably gives her one last chance to prove herself worthy to be kept around, so Saena avoids her daughter to focus on her work. Once she reclaims her reputation, Saena leaves with Kitagiri to Tokyo to continue her career. She probably stays with Kitagiri's firm, because she's grateful for his help with everything.

Since she is working hard and not eating properly it could explain while she's even more tired than the others. So if it's as you said and a month of perhaps he did't rape her that time, at least that is what I am hoping because I hate rape and that guy just looking at him I thought he looked like a sleaze, he looks like the protagonist of this manga I read once before who was disgusting and a total sleaze.

Wasn't that back in February that Saena had the pain that was possibly period pain? (I'm usually terrible with dates, but the life/existence math in this case was pretty memorable, at least in Western cultures. It had never occurred to me before the flashback that a Christmas baby like Kyoko was probably conceived around April Fool's Day.)
If Misonoi has truly drugged Saena, then there is the possibility that was enough to cause an unplanned pregnancy (Kyoko). After all, to be fully protected, safe sex isn't enough, Saena would also have to be taking a contraceptive pill at around the same time every day. Drugging her could make her sleep through the time she normally takes it, if it's the morning before work. Seems plausible for Saena to time it then, before she gets caught up at work - and considering how unwilling she is to take a break to deal with personal things during work.
The plotline's got so crime-drama, I even started to wonder whether Saena was planning to use Kyoko's DNA to trace Misonoi and revenge herself on him.

Ah...actually, she might not even take a contraceptive pill and might think that condoms are enough.

Hehe..true but how can she trace Misonoi if he is 'missing'? I'm not sure if in Japan, they have a record of everyone's DNA. Usually..well, in US shows, iirc, they have the DNA of criminals.

Though after rereading it, I did notice that Misonoi and Kyoko have that same smile. You know where he's reading her knitted brow (which kyoko can also do i am pretty sure) and it's the same smile kyoko does, like the one mouko talks about, like that time she got mouko to join the loveme section :D <-- kinda like that, they're kinda the same so it could be that without a doubt he is her father. Though that's already been established.
I also don't think he will do anything to her, but since she has been working as hard as she had I believe if there's any files she has on her he might look through it gaining the upperhand in the court case, or he was hired to or something. Once the court case is over he will probably dump her (using and abandoning her, the thing she had in common with Fuwa and Kyoko when she thought they were actually lovers) after which she will find out she's pregnant and also find out that Misonoi was an alias so she can't contact him and realizes he was only using her for the court case, or she sees him on the other side; both instances realizing he has used and abandoned her.
Which also sucks since it was her first boyfriend to and he was a sleaze bag.

    7. True..Anime.

Ya...something like that. Then, she vents her frustration and everything on Kyouko over her gullibility?

True, if it is indeed that.

Well, I guess I thought it would be part of the ‘working adult’ package for Saena, using maximum contraception if she’s in a relationship. And it’s something non-violent but still really wrong Misonoi could do to Saena that makes Kyoko’s conception more his ‘fault’ than hers, eliminating the pill-protection as a knock-on effect of drugging Saena.

I was more thinking of Saena planning to use a paternity suit to trace Misonoi, then using the evidence gathered in that case to link him to whatever shady activity is causing the atmosphere of threat in those last panels – and Saena’s sense of betrayal. But the strategy would fail because Misonoi would switch names and go underground.

    1. I see, Zozo.

Hm..after reading a lot of manga, I only read about condoms being the choice of contraceptive so I researched it a bit on google. It seems that Japanese women aren't exactly fond of using the pill.

That is possible especially since there are good lawyers on her side but it seems that it didn't happen since she is still the one providing for Kyouko. Also, there is that 'he already dead' theory.

      Oh, I see - I wouldn't have guessed that. That's amazing for a country with such a low birth-rate.
I guess that shifts the responsibility towards the guy. Now I see better how the mangaka could create some sympathy for Saena, when "an antinatalist, who, weirdly, has a kid... and neglects her" would normally be a recipe for "hate figure".

Misonoi would definitely have to be cunning to be a deadbeat dad with a lawyer ex and co on his trail. He might be up to it, though. Not everyone who can read microexpressions is a spy, but those qualifications he said he already has - calculus and abacus - that's some of the math background you need for IT - or hacking.
Since he's shaping up to be the villain, I don't think Misonoi will be dead, because that would 'lift the curse'. But you never know.

    3. Yup.

We'll just have to wait and see.

  43. i know i'm late but i had a random thought earlier after i reread this, and it was about the earlier chapters the beginning of ch.14 to be exact. If anyone remembers the reporter from boost that was snooping around during kyokos photo shoot. Mind you its just something that popped into my head but could that be misonoi??? and when he saw kyoko he thought she looked like saena. that would be a twist... and the next chapter might have something to do with saena finding out not only is she pregnant but misonoi used her to get information on her case to put in his scoop for the magazine. duh duh duh

    1. Hm..maybe though I really don't pay much attention to that reporter since I read somewhere that the mangaka mentioned about not bringing that up again since media/paparazzi will make the story complicated. And, even if it is him and he thought she looked like Saena..what then? There is no follow-up for a year. And, Kyouko at that time..doesn't resemble Saena.

Scoop for the magazine..but Saena is a lawyer, not a showbiz celebrity. They might sue the magazine for talking about the case in public without permission.

    2. Yeah thats true that'd cause a big problem... so then perhaps he may just be jealous that saena is apart of an important case so he drugs her all the way up til the day of and she misses it or is unprepared and loses the case. Then again it could be super simple and he drugged her just because she was working to hard and needed rest. And she took it as a betrayal because she loses the case and thinks if i only had enough time but he drugged me.

Gosh i don't know, this series just has me on edge with every new chapter released. You think one thing then you get hit with a curve ball out of nowhere. But of course thats why its so darn good.

    3. That is a possibility.

That's right and it keeps us hooked..with all the guessing and everything..especially the cliffhanger.

  45. First, thanks for your work, it's nice to have the chapter translated this early after the release.

Second, I read every comment, and I think like one of them, that Saena is already pregnant at that time, but the drug is the one to make her fall asleep. I really don't think that he raped her, because in my mind he liked her and he is not displayed as a caracter who is going to do something so awfull. I believe everything was related to the Jou case (big case in business industry with powerfull people). From my point, Misonoi is a spy, famous in the black industry, who was employed by the powerfull people on the opposite team of the Jou case to leek their strategy plan in order for them to win. Once the work was done, as planned, he disappeared. I think falling in love was not part of his plan and somehow it happens, but as one living in the shadows (maybe in yakuza world ?), and after betraying Saena, he chooses to go away. I don't think he knew that Saena was pregnant.

Well that's it. Sorry for my poor english, that not my mother tong.

Thanks again, and I look forward to reading the next chapter !

    1. Thanks for the comment, FJ ^-^

Is that so. Well, true..but then, how is that story going to affect Kyouko? I don't think it has impact that her mother treated her badly because she lost the case due to her father and it just so happen that he left something behind. Somehow, I think that there is more to it. But as a famous spy..that will be interesting.

      No problem ^^

Hopefully...it seems that the Chinese scanlators are laying low for a while due to some arrests in Japan.
