Hirunaka No Ryuusei [Chapter 78] -Fin-

Flashback: At a nursery school, a couple of girls invited young Mamura to play ‘play house’ with them. Thinking that it is boring to death, Mamura refused. The disappointed girl started to cry and called him mean. The teacher came in and asked what happened. Pointing to Mamura, the girl’s friend told the teacher that he made her friend cry. Mamura is surprised that the teacher is reprimanding him for it. Mamura thought that he didn’t do anything wrong, and this girl is just pretending to cry. Narration: “Ever since before, I’m not good in dealing with these living creatures called girls.” Later on, the teacher said that sky is very dark. She told Mamura to be good and wait some more for the one who is going to fetch him. Mamura watched the TV of the cartoon character who said that he’ll do things alone, and look at his instant attack. Then, his mother arrived. She apologized for coming late. While bored Mamura held a stick, his mother gave him a cartoon character toy which he watched earlier. It is her apology for always fetching him late. Mamura hugged the toy tight. She asked him if he’s happy when it is rare to see him this happy.
Narration: “The only one beside me, who can open wide my inner heart without any apprehension, is my mother. But everything ended too suddenly.” Crying by the table that has a divorce paper on it, his mother apologized and said that she loves everyone in this family but beside her, there is someone important. “I’m really sorry.” His mother has fallen in love with her boss at her workplace. She abandoned her husband, kids, and disappeared from Mamura’s life. While his younger brother is crying his eyes out over this, Mamura thinks it’s gross. [-> probably referring to the old geezer he imagined that his mother fell in love with] So from that day on, he grew to hate girls more and more. He would ignore the girls, and call them a hindrance which made some girls also get angry at him. And then he gradually started to show some strange symptom. A girl called out to him and touched him. He blushed which made the girl asked what she did. He shouted for her not to touch him. So, until junior high, he had lived a life that totally has no connection whatsoever with girls. Mamura and friends were discussing which high school to go to. Narration: “But, just as how everything spontaneously ended, everything once again started so suddenly.”
Suzume shouted for him to be her friend. This had made surprised Mamura blush. He felt that she is a particularly annoying girl. Until that day, he always thought that he just have to treat girls with rudeness, they’ll embarrass themselves and leave. But this girl is different. Suzume continued to greet him. He snubbed her but she still called out to him to borrow his eraser in exchange for a chocolate. She kept on calling him, and threatened to tickle him. Narration: “I’m not too sure in what way is she different from the other girls. But I don’t know why I don’t hate talking with her.” And Suzume threatened to tickle him again. One time, Suzume gave him a head butt on the back while calling out to him. While wearing make-up, she bid him goodbye. Blushing Mamura muttered about her suddenly doing that again. While holding his painful back, he complained about how it hurt and make-up doesn’t suit her. He thought that at one side, she would say that she has no friends but she has someone who’ll make her run off to see him. Looked flustered, Mamura clenched his fist and thought that seeing her with very red cheeks rushing off like that, made him angry. “What’s different about her and the other girls? Why is it that girl? What’s good about her? I totally couldn’t understand it. But I don’t know why, I think of her at every moment. Even though as an outsider, *Tsubomi appeared* even if it is for a moment, I also want *held hands with Suzume* to become, whom she’ll regards as, a special existence. *winter with Suzume* When, I’m with her, it is also okay even if I fear that it is a little bit, I also hope to make her feel happy.” End flashback.
Tick tock. Tick tock. It is now 5:40pm at the hospital. After hearing what Shishio said, Suzume opens her mouth to say, “I also liked, sensei. *pause* I’m sorry. Right now, I cannot return sensei’s feelings. Right now, there is someone whom I want to cherish from the bottom of my heart. (No matter what, I perceived it too late. Obviously at that time, [at the clinic], I should have perceived my true feelings.) I cannot accept your feelings. I’m sorry. (I have once again hurt a lot of people) *bows head* Sorry.” Shishio smiles and says that actually, he has earlier come to an awareness that things will become like this. His feelings also felt at ease since in the end, he was able to say what he wanted to say. He tells her that he is already very happy that just because she is worried about him that she came to see him for a while. Thinking over him saying, ‘in the end’, Suzume tearfully tells him even if he told her before that her feelings for him is more like longing for him but she thinks that it is definitely love. “No matter what others say, you are my first love.”
Shishio says ya, he knows. Suzume thinks that he won’t use that voice to call her name anymore. Shishio pats her head and tells her not to cry for she really likes to make small issues into big ones, it isn’t like they’ll part forever. [<- someone dying]. While Shishio is laughing, she thinks that he won’t use that hand to touch her again. He lets go of his hand and says, “Then, see you again in the next school term.” Suzume thinks that even if they’ll brush past each other in the hallway, the sensei of that time no longer exists. With folded arms, Shishio laughs and says, “Goodbye!” Suzume thinks that after crying, being confused, worried [/distress] so many times, and even if the happy memories are only a little bit but these memories will be like that star in the night sky, it will continue to illuminate her inner heart. “It is really great that you were able to become my first love. It’s really great that my first memory is you.” By the wall at the hospital, Tsubomi laments over being busy for Shishio yet he failed to live up to expectations. Shishio says that she’s noisy to death.
She continues to say that he is really covered up in cuts and bruises in defeat. Shishio corrects her as he claims that earlier on, he knew that it is a losing battle. He thinks that if Suzume’s heart hasn’t wavered [from loving him], she wouldn’t have gone steady with Mamura for she isn’t a scheming girl even if she herself hasn’t perceived it. “Although I know it all, but I also want to gamble and see even if possibility is quite small. What. This is truly quite unlike me.” Cough. Cough. Yukichi interrupted his thoughts and offers to treat him to a couple of glasses of beer. This made Shishio laugh and say that he is truly nice, so he wants a big glass. Yukichi angrily tells him not to joke around. Holding Yukichi’s arm, Tsubomi happily sings about free drinks. Yukichi complains about her being like that too, and quit pulling his arm. Narration: “From today on, you are also my unforgettable person.”
Back to the beautiful beach of Okinawa, while Manabu is sound asleep, Mamura is standing by the beach. He couldn’t sleep. His thoughts wander to Suzume. He wonders if she has seen that guy, but before that, did she arrive safely in Tokyo. He becomes surprised and tells himself that it is no good to think about her again. He recalls her asking if he wants onigiri for she has three. He wonders if she is properly eating. And, a girl is running through the sand as her long hair sways around. Mamura seems to hear a female voice calling out inaudibly, ‘mura ..mura.. Mamura. Mamura-’ Mamura quickly turns around to see a familiar ponytailed girl waving her arms like an idiot and calling his name, “Mamura-” Mamura starts rubbing his eyes and wonders if it is a hallucination. He starts to become tense when Suzume starts charging towards him. And she goes flying to give him her trademark headbutt on his stomach. Ah yes, it is for real alright because that really hurts. While Suzume is on top of him, Mamura shouts that it hurts, and why would she go charging at him in full force. She apologizes for she took advantage of the momentum. He changes the topic to didn’t she go to Tokyo, or could it be that she didn’t go back. She tells him that she did and listened to the words that she should have listened to.
She always thought that at the clinic, just by listening to it until the end, and the reason why she didn’t let Shishio finish what he is saying, is because her feelings would definitely once again return to Shishio’s side. So at one side, she told him not to leave her and at another side, she would avoid Shishio. “But actually, that is a mistake. (--In reality) I possibly just couldn’t accept the me, who had a change of heart. (the moment when I finished listening to it, I already clearly know who I truly like. I still definitely needed a bit of time in making the person I like the most as the ‘past’.) Actually, the past me won’t even dare to let myself fall in love with someone other than sensei. (When talking with sensei at the clinic that time, I was thinking how can we interact normally? It is because at that time, my feelings had already changed. Cheering on during the sports festival. *Suzume cheering gambatte* That sadness felt when our hands didn’t touch. *Mamura didn’t touch her hands after the festival* That heart pounding at the aquarium *almost kisses* I only have to properly search in my heart, wouldn’t the answer already come out? Unknowingly, you gave me support [/inspiration], *after the rejection* Even if it is quietly, but in reality, it exists.) *he held her hands and smiled at her* So, right now, I’ll clearly tell you (in addition, more and more..) Mamura, I like you. This time, I’ll make you happy. *blushing* Yoroshiku [Please take care of me].”
This made Mamura blush and says, “Are..are you serious..?” Suzume says how she can lie about this kind of thing. Mamura asks her to repeat it one more time. This made Suzume self-conscious. After some hesitation and pauses, blushing Suzume mutters, “I like you.” This makes Mamura pull her down to him and kisses her. He smiles and says, “Me, too. From today on, yoroshiku.” Narration: “I know it already. To be able to make someone happy is such a happy thing. And the one who taught me this, is you.” While Nana is still sleeping, Yuyuka is looking out the balcony. She complains about seeing something that makes her angry so early in the morning and no wonder it’s quite noisy. She also complains over how Suzume made her worry for nothing so how she is going to punish her. She smiles and wonders how taking a humiliating picture. Narration: “If one day, stars go dim and decline, you will definitely illuminate the path I’m forging ahead in. Happy times, sad times, and no matter what kind of times, you’ll be at my side. Your hand, your smile, your everything, no matter how long, it will be at the place closest to me. Your existence is my life’s daytime shooting star.” And a shooting star crosses the sky above. Fin.
Comment: And Mamura fans from all over the world are rejoicing. For those who knew it in their gut that this is the ending, yes, believe and it will happen ^^ The mangaka managed to pull out a nice ending without making Suzume look fickle as she goes back to the other side. Ah yes, she’s slow and it took her the moment for Shishio to tell her what he wants to tell her to realize her true feelings. Okay.. In a way, the characters seem to have a tendency to have this, ‘I know this and that but nevertheless, did something otherwise’. Shishio knows the outcome but still confessed. Well, at least, to put a period with that relationship for both of them. In a way, that is a major thing for him since he described himself as a coward. He would indeed not forget Suzume for he learned a very valuable lesson there, and because of his choice, he did lost something what could have been a very important part of his life. Anyway, he has friends to help him drink his sorrows away. I can almost imagine Yukichi sighing in relief over what happened. And, I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to pay Suzume’s trip back. Honestly, I’m thinking who paid for that round trip ticket because I’m sure the school won’t shoulder it.

And that was a nice reunion and confession. Very unique with the girl giving him a head butt then confessing to him in that position. Well, at least, I’m right about the kiss in the last chapter. ^^; The way Suzume said that she won’t lie about the confession makes me think that it is a jab against Shishio. ^^; In a way, speaking of shooting star, Mamura did get his wish to be a special existence to Suzume ^^ And if Mamura didn’t get Suzume, she would be the second woman whom he really love yet was taken away by an older man. ^^;; So, in this case, the good and deserving guy wins. Overall, I cannot really comment on the series because I think I skipped some parts. When I first read this, I thought that it is another teacher-student love story. Then, of course, there are rivals and stuff. When Tsubomi appeared, I realize that it will be the usual he is hung up on the ex-, girl sad, etc so I skipped those parts. I got back on the story again when I thought that Shishio is finally going to confess and we can get on some lovey-dovey. Boy, I was wrong about that. ^^; The important confession scene became like that, and Mamura pretty much took over the rest of the series..and it became a love triangle-type of series with either of the guys’ fans hoping he’ll get the girl. ^^;; Of course, in the finale, the choice will be known. Hm..very different from what I thought this series will be. Anyway, as always, thank you everyone for reading my summaries of this series. ^-^ Scans by allwink

    I'm so happy!!
    Mazume <3 <3 <3 <3
    Ahh, sweet, sweet, victory.
But you know, I think this final chapter was foreshadowed during the race between Sensei and Mamura at the Sports Festival. At first, it looked like Sensei was winning but Mamura, with all his might, managed to swoop in and win. :D

Anyways, Thank you so much Kat for the fast update. ^^

  2. NOOOOO!!!!! Nooo.....! (No...)
Suzume and Shishio were on the same wavelength to me, their interactions were natural.....
Though, she's not the type to break up with Mamura, like she was throwing him away / using him. And, I wouldn't want her to do that either... BUT I WANTED HER TO END UP WITH SHISHIO!!!!!!!

  3. Thank you very much for the summaries!
I really like how their relationship progressed throughout.
They didn't start in the most exciting way. Actually, it was awkward. But then they gradually improved along the way.
Which it makes it more precious. Because feelings got cultivated.
Suzume fell in love with Shishio, but with Mamura.. she grown in love. That was the most realistic thing anyone could do. And I salute Yamamori-sensei for this. Healthy relationships are built in the most subtle and little things.
I hope this will be an eye-opener to shoujo mangakas out there, that as much as first love has that captivating brilliance and sparkle, it's not just the 'doki-doki factor' that makes up a good romance.

    1. YES! I agree. Realistic love don't happen when you have a crush on someone. I used to have a crush on a fellow classmate who was a year older than me. He knew I like him and every time I'm with him, I couldn't breathe. But, we never ended up together because of differences. I'm glad it is Mamura. I was giving up and sworn I will never read this series again. Hahahhaa. Yeah, I'm so relieved.

True ^^ In a way, it also depends, I think..on what kind of story it is, though it seems that first love is really the 'favorite topic' in shoujo.

I liked the ending for Mamura, but I still don't like Suzume :< It's good that he ended up with the girl he likes and all, but she made him suffer so much, waaah T__T

    1. True. He suffered too much. All this time he thought eventually he would be thrown away.
But I guess that's also why he has grown into a much more likable character. From someone who never wanted to associate himself with the opposite sex to a person who unconditionally loves.

I could relate with Suzume actually. First love is something that is hard to deal with because we all want our first to be our one true love. But that's not how things usually are. We fall in love, get hurt but even so want it to work well, so we cling to that feeling and make it hard for ourselves to accept that things do change. In the end it also displayed Suzume's step to maturity by accepting the change in her heart that she ignored a while back.

    2. Yes, yes and yes D: This manga was actually pretty acurate about IRL feelings and all that.
But I'm too biased for Mamura's well being to think too deeply about it D: If I think back reasonably, I can see the Mazume ending... but I didn't cause I was just SO sad for Mamura and hnnng >< I loved him too much <3

Nevertheless... Maybe it was a good ending (?) I'm still not happy about it, but it looks like it was a good ending.

  7. Hahahahaha XD
Love for Shishio <3 Actually, If the story end with Shizume ending, I wouldn't too mind. Hirunaka no Ryuusei is the first manga about teacher and student relationship that not make me sick. Childish Shishio is realistic. They have insecurity too, they made mistake too, and they have to care about their job too. I like how YamaMika descripting him. And the other hand, Suzume is not a nagging-annoying-not understanding girl too. Some other main chara of this theme have a complexion to make the teacher is all-high-mighty, popular, have unwavering feeling and cool (for addition, some of them is portrayed as lusty adult too) and the student are helpless, always feeling saved and in debt with the teacher and feeling too much in love for the teacher (and some of them will do something stupid like "I will do everything for sensei" and going like "I will give my body for sensei). It just MEH :/
It's not like againts the idea of student-teacher relationship, it's just they love story usually portrayed shallow and unbalance that I hate it so much ._. Actually I ever consider too dropping this manga because of Shizume are canon in some point, but when I continue read them, It's not annoying. I love Shizume. I breaking my rule to not read student-teacher relationship for Shizume. And I feel broken heart too when they broke up :/

At first, I only like Mamura as a character. I like shy boy XD Then he growing in me and make me Mazume supporter. But really, I love sensei too :* Hope the next extra in January will show happy sensei :3

Mazume canon, the star in Mamura chest it not lie after all XD I screaming in happy when I see the kissing scene. I even read the chinese scantranslation even though I don't understand a thing XD I'm so glad that my first ship ever is going to canon. And Mamura sneaky-blushing face after the kiss is cute XD Tho I wish to see Suzume reaction afterwards too (sad it's not showed :/) But well yeaaaah! I super happy with this manga. Not only because the end, but it's because the manga itself. I hope HnR will be release in Indonesia bookstore too so I can support YamaMika without feeling sad because I don't understand a thing what that being written in there Tee Hee~

Ah yeah, about the earlier, I think chibi Mamura say "gross" to his mother behavior. That's why he said since he said that he hate women more after that. That's why I can't help but laugh when you write this ----> "And if Mamura didn’t get Suzume, she would be the second woman whom he really love yet was taken away by an older man. ^^" Just LOL!

    And guess what Kat?
I LOVE YOU! Thanky you so much :* SOO SOOOO MUCCCHHH!!

    1. Lol, sangataa..is that some smut manga? ^^; Though such stuff are not limited to teacher-student, the 'I'll do everything for you', and 'give body for you'.

      Most likely so.

Hehe, is that so - 'first ship ever is going to canon'. ^^ Oh, manga is published in the local language there?

Hm..true..gross for falling in love with an old geezer?

      Thank you ^-^

      Delete
    2. No, I always avoid that genre. Maybe I read wrong manga -_- But honestly, I did found that kind of manga. It's just kissing though, but those little girl do think something like that. And the teacher are really like a lusty adult. "I will teach you how to be adult?" UGH! It's humiliation to all of the teacher. And~ that's right. I dropping some manga because that magic words XD It's hard to find manga with good story, not just with ikemen, moe or fan service.

No. Not yet -____- Usually only popular shonen manga that published here. Shojou manga are not that popular here. Even it published, usually not shojou manga with many volume. :/

Yep, I think he thing his mother gross because she is cheating with some other guy and trow away her husband and her own child. That what I think at least XD

Ah yeah, I heard you sick. Get well soon~

    3. Hehe..I see..well, before shoujo manga are somewhat smutty though they toned it down already these days. True..and it usually happens with an 'older person' type of series. Indeed..and it takes a lot of reading to find those gems.

Ah, is that so. Here, in my country, Philippines, manga are all from the English publishers in US. There used to be a local unlicensed publish but it didn't click it seems. I think anime is more popular here than manga.

      Hehe, is that so.

      Thanks ^-^

    4. Oh Philippines... What is your native language?

Actually whenever I see any manga with Indonesian language, I don't like it. It just ERRRRRR... They use bahasa gaul--> not really sure how to explain it to you, but let's say that bahasa gaul is modern language for daily conversation. I prefer formal language so read manga in my native language is not my favorite. I prefer read it in English.

So it's mean that manga in there is from japan-->go to US to translate->distribute to Philippines? What a long way~

PS: In my native language, Philippines called by Filipina XD

      Delete
    5. It is Filipino..though in reality, there are other groups of ethnicity who do not consider it as the 'national language' since it is based on a certain ethnic group so they prefer their own native one + English. So, most people here knows English ^^

I see...I also prefer it in English. The anime here are mostly dubbed in the local language. For the dub, they use Filipino then English for the words that has no Filipino equivalent or if the Filipino equivalent is harder to understand. Lol

That's right..it is a long way and of course, more expensive so I just learned Chinese to read them. =P

Is that so..interesting. Filipina here means a female native of the Philippines. ^^ And, Filipino can also mean a male native of the Philippines.

      Delete
    6. Oh... interesting. We too, have hundreds ethic in Indonesia. Most of us go with Bahasa Indonesia for general. But usually in the village/province we use our own language. For English itself, most of Indonesian consider English as their first forgein language as its be the most frequently use for our daily activities. Though it doesn't mean we can't speak and write well in english XD

      Dub? I prefer Sub forevaaa~

What a good reason to learn new language XD But isn't chinese are more difficult than japanese?

Really? So everytime I mention Filipina it's mean female native? Hahaha... It's first time I heard that!

      Delete
    7. I see ^^ So, it's like that, too.

Yup, dub. People tend to be lazy in reading subtitles. ^^; Or, well, it might be hard to read if the subtitles are very small. You haven't finished reading, and it is already at the next scene. =P There are pros and cons though I also prefer subtitles.

They say that it is but I already had some basic knowledge of Chinese = how to look for words in the dictionary so I decided on that rather than learning Japanese = zero knowledge. ^^; Also, at that time, raws tend to be on-off thing, not that consistent so I stuck with Chinese scanlations. Also, it is more practical to learn Chinese than Japanese..ah, based on reality since it is more widely used.

      Indeed. ^^

      Delete
    8. It's weird... somehow I considering to learn Chinese after read what you wrote :v I don't know if what I heard is true but there is a words that saying Chinesse scantranslation is easier to find than Japan. If that's true than it must be very providable to me XD
But still, I don't understand a thing about Chinese hahaha....
Both Japanese and Chinese language is hard for my tongue ._. And my brain XD

      Delete
    9. Well...it also depends on the series, which are easily available or not. There are times when they are forbidding the spread of Japanese raws on the internet with the belief that it hurts the manga sales. There are some sites that come and go. Basically, there are pros and cons...hehe, of course, there is an advantage to know both =P

It is like this. In Chinese, each word has a specific meaning, and becomes different meaning when combined with different words. So, they say that it is difficult because you have to remember what those words mean. In Japanese, you just have to remember the alphabet like ka, ke ki, ko, ku, da,de, di, do, du, etc. Then, syllables together form the word. ^^

      I guess it is a bit like my local language but somehow, the squiggly simplified lines makes me think that they are all the same. ^^;;

Hehe, is that so. It is difficult. Actually, I can only read. Lol, If I saw it out loud, the pronunciation is all wrong. ^^; I find the pronunciation in Japanese easier.

      Delete
    10. Ah, I learn a bit about japanese before. It's quite hard considering how my native language works. It's so different :/ Well, every language is unique after all so there is noting much that I can do.

Hahaha I think the same. Watching and listening anime and song like listening study section so it's easier to copy XD

  10. Thank you very much Kat, the chapter now is ten times better after reading your summary, I understood things better, it doesn't feel as rushed as I thought at first, and I'm really happy about the outcome, I was like you at first Kat, I thought at the beginning that this story probably was the typical shoujo, but one part of me really rooted for Mamura from the beginning, then chapters passed and seeing Mazume's interactions, I thought maybe this isn't what I thought, maybe this story is about moving on afterall and boy I'm so glad I was right, I really enjoyed reading something different and unique, were the healthiest and realistic relationship triumphs, I enjoyed the ride.

  14. Oh god oh god can't believe my OTP came true XD Few days ago I tweeted about how obvious it was she was ending with Shishio and then... BAM, Mazume in our faces. Fandom aside, the author did come up with a nice ending. I feel sorry for Shishio tough, in a way he represents lost oportunities and wrong choices. Hope he gets his happily ever after too <3
It's so sweet the way Mamura and Suzume grew in each other's hearts.. Definitely a refreshing shoujo amongst many cliche ones. I got a similar feeling with Peach Girl, though Hirunaka no Ryuusei drops the excessive drama.

Thanks for the summary, Kat ^^ I really recommend reading the chapters you missed, this one's really worth it (:

  16. the only thing that left ????? in my head is.. how Suzume can easily come back and forth from Okinawa - Tokyo - Okinawa in just like 1 day lol? She sure has so many money (or maybe like you said, her uncle paid for her) but then... lol. cant stop wondering :p

and iam really satisfied with this ending and the whole series since I truthfully felt that it is a very realistic premise & relate to life so much - the theme of moving on. I know it is never easy to forget our first love completely and how Suzume acted & felt is very logical, she even acknowledged Sensei as her first love and a precious experience (usually when a heroine chose a guy, the other guy will only be regarded with *infatuation* / *crush* / her being *confused* before). I really enjoy all the narratives and lines since they are very pretty. How Yamamori Mika ended* Sensei's story is realistic too, instead of introducing him to another love possibility in the end of the manga, that would be too cliche & sappy. Tbh I'm not pity Sensei at all since I know he is not a character to be pitied at all bcs he is a strong & cool character like that, he deserves someone who suits him better ;) ♡

Indeed...though for Shishio, I think he made a major mistake with her so I cannot really say that he wasn't suited for her. Do you mean age-wise? Or in dealing with the kind of person he is?

    1. Well actually they have been dating for almost 20-30 chapters now. And there's actually a special chapter on their dating life a few chapters back. It was common i must say it was the same as their everyday life. So i think even after reaffirming their feeling for each other their dating life would be just like usual bcoz thats what they have been doing all this time, dating. Well cant blame them bcoz they ARE the dorky couple. Not those kind of sugary sweet that will make you have serious caries teeth but just those laid back normal couple that is just that comfortable with each other with added extra of few blushing faces here and there and those doki doki moments. Oh my mazume feels~~

  24. Ah... I'm quite pleasantly surprised. I could have sworn it was a Shishio ending and I was rather sad about that (<--Mamura fan rejoicing here). It's nice that the Mangaka wrote a heroine that for once doesn't use the "rebound" technique and squashes the heart of a perfectly nice and normal guy. It's difficult to write a love story where the second guy gets the girl in a way that pleases the reader.

  27. YAY FOR MAZUME <3

at first I thought this would be another rebound shoujo manga (ao haru ride, heroine shikkaku, etc) where the second guy is always just a character that helps he realize or reinforce her feelings for the second guy but it wasn't and I am so proud :">

Also, this is the second manga that I've read wherein the girl ends up with the "second guy", (the first being Tonari no Atashi where the second guy appears like 15 chapters later hahaha whereas in HnR Mamura was like in chapter 2 already?) <--- which supports my idea that Yamamori Mika sensei had already decided from the beginning that Suzume would end up with Mamura.

Also, by reading logically and with reasonable thinking the manga from the start until the end, you can actually see that she would eventually end up with Mamura since all of those precious shoujo moments (i.e. Birthday, christmas, field trip, summer festival) and other events were mostly spent with Mamura hahaha so yeah MAZUME FIVE-EVAH <3

  28. Woah its a huge war out there on tumblr twitter and mangasites. Well some ship sink and some ship sail....

And for me my ship sail!! Yuhuuuu~~~ let me do my winning dance ceremony a bit...hahha...mazume to the end!

After reading the last 3 to 4 chapter eventhough most people (including you kat~) points out that the ending is obvious (it will be shishio) but i dont know is it just my gut feeling or what but it didnt feel right bout that ending that most people saw as obvious bcoz i do think some hint like suzume saying to herself (no dont cry you didnt have the right to) and ( i will properly face those words not said) is more like she is telling herself that she will put a proper closure with sensei before going back again with mamura bcoz before this she is just avoiding the problem without properly facing thats why her mind is so hung-up with sensei.

Thinking back, its irony bcoz i started reading this manga bcoz of mamura (bcoz of the cover of mamura in volume 6) coz i thought the art is nice and i genuinely thought that the guy on the cover (mamura) is the hero. Then i started reading the 1st 2nd chapter and i was repulsed bcoz the manga focus on shizume n sensei. And i thought to myself ok wasnt the blonde guy supposed to be the hero?? Then i stop reading it and jump to the latest chapter at that time and yeah man am i so wrong that shishio really is the hero. Well all my interest on reading it goes down the drain bcoz i was expecting someone else to be the hero coz thats the main reason why i was attracted in reading it. Then 1 year later BAMM!! there was all these buzzz about mamura daiki from HnR. Lot of mazume shippers appear. Then i thought just maybe this manga would deviate from the norm in giving the chance to the nice guy to get the girl by the end of the day. And man am i right and i just couldnt be more happy than i am now for making my hope and mazume heart come true in the end.

Thank you very much Kat for all these wonderful summaries that you've made. I enjoy every bits and pieces of it.

  29. I started reading this from day One....... the presence of mamura early on , and my preference for him , made me stop reading. I thought this was a fixed couple.... that no matter how nice and good the second guy is, the first one would be the winner. I'm totally mistaken, and I'm so happy at the ending. Life's choices do change the future, even the little things. Shisio made his choice. Once he had done that, everything else would be out of his control. I'm glad the author wrote a logical ending.

I'm now a happy camper . I'm going to reread this with a happy disposition.

The reality is that we the fans should be understanding of the character's/author's decision that Suzume loves Mamura. I really liked this manga because for me its not the usual shoujo story. It has a character development and the MC is not weak weak. I never got annoyed with her character.. Also, the art is nice, very neat. Initially, I thought to myself I don't care who she'll end up with since both guys pretty much deserve her.. but as it progresses I started rooting for Mamura and disappointed since its kinda impossible with Shishio back in the scene. He is becoming distant, she put in effort to invite him to Okinawa. Almost kisses at the aquarium made her feel 'excited in love'. Well, something like that.

Well, it seems to be like that until the confession thing. Though for the others, it seems that there is more build up with Mamura because he is there during those important ocassions like birthday, Christmas, etc.

  39. Kat, thank you so much for your detailed summaries and for not dropping this gem! While I'm somewhat miffed at Yamamori Mika for abruptly ending the series and giving in to the love triangle trope, I'm really glad Mamura got his happy ending because he deserved it.

His character growth was so beautiful to read — his silent mannerisms, his tsundere attitude, his persistent love and friendship toward Suzume… Ugh. What I love the most about him is that he's NOT perfect as some fangirls like to claim. He has his flaws, but seeing him grow and mature was a treat to see. Now I'll always think of Mamura every time I hear Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours."

Everyone wants their first love to succeed and to be their one and only, but it's rare that they ever do. HnR was really realistic in showing Suzume's first love with Shishio and then moving on and finding love again with Mamura. It's so rare to see in shoujo manga.

    Thanks again~

  45. fuck the people in yamamori-sensei's life who gave her shit for having a school girl and her teacher fall in love.
yamamori-sensei even made her twitter private because 'fans' were tweeting her so much bs about how they 'needed' a mamura ending, and they got what wanted. the poor mangaka would have probably been drowned in her own blood if she'd ended it the way she wanted to end it. i literally don't believe for one second that this is what she wanted for her series, but humans are cruel and wicked and they will stamp on and shit on the feelings, wants, needs and emotions of others to fulfill their own greedy selfish hearts. i personally rooted for mamura but this isn't what she wanted. most the readers knew that the author herself was rooting for shishio which makes it even worse that it had to end like this. who would fly across country to visit an injured man in hospital only to then go and break his heart??? suzume would NEVER DO THAT. and yet she did. because yamamori-sensei had to appease all these pricks giving her shit about her story.

Well, she succumbed to pressure, though I'm not too sure how bad threats can be in Japan..I recall there was also a shounen mangaka on basketball who had some threat problems that caused some issues on his appearances on cons. Since she did, I guess it was really, really bad for those 'fans' take the series way too seriously.

Maybe she'll create a different ending on the volume =P Anyway, maybe she'll write about it in the volume..just like what happened in Stardust Wink..the reason for the main girl's flip-flopping until the end between the two guys was explained.

    2. I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with you. I personally could list coumtless subtle hints of Suzume ending with Mamura. Mika-san has been throwing so many hints abou them, even when Suzume was "dating" Shishio. People who claim tha Suzume ended with Suzume I doubt if they have read really read the manga, and its theme. I doubt if they the full picture of this manga. Mangaka admitted herself that she had already decided the end a long time ago. I doubt she would thrown her story, the narrative for any people or threats, it's ridiculous. mamgakas are always facing these kind of situations with the fans whn it's ending. Do you think that this shallow and dumb reaon will make her change THE LAST minute the end, especially when she was developing Mamura's and Suzume's relationship from the beginning of the manga, first as friends and then as lovers. I really feel sad and disgusted with you people who try to belittle and ignore their developmenr. BUT I have to agree in one thing; yes for me it was quite obvious a Mamura/Suzume ending even before they start dating, but I have to agree that it was rushed (but honestly a Shishio/ Suzume ending would be 1000 times more rushed). I think the mangaka was intended to make the manga longer, and had to to finish the manga sooner than she intended and yes I think we have to blame for the rushed pace of the last 5- 6 chapters to the editor of the manga; I think that person that "forced" her to drugg the love triangle for the sake of poularity when she could really devote her chapter on Mamura and Suzume's relationship with out the love triangle drama. So yes while I could see the Mazume ending fro mules away, I think the excetution of the end was really rushed.Anyway, thank you for your translation, although, the japanese translation doesn't say that Mamura is now Suzume's daytime shooting star but actually says that Suzume WANTS to be Mamura's daytime shooting star, which has a great meaning, because in the end this just proves that all this time Suzume was the REAL daytime shooting star of the story :"))

    3. Also it wasn't only Mazume fans who agressively tweeted her...have you seen how awful and arrogant were the Shizume fans. I think it's hypocritive to accuse only the one part, just sayin...

    4. Well, the editor thing could be a factor. I'm not too sure of the fans influence especially on love triangles, but because of the editor, things can change a bit.

Well, I hope it is like that = it is the ending she wanted, regardless of what the fans want ^^

Thanks for reading ^-^ Oh..is that so.

    5. I’m really sorry about my harsh reply to that supposed anonymous “Mamura” supporter. ;_; O just felt sad and disgusted with how some people tend to belittle and completely “ignore” the whole meaning of this manga, the whole picture, because their blind Shishio bias doesn’t let them see, that the narrative and hints were pointing towards Mamura/Suzume and because they didn’t get the end they want and have in their minds~ You did an excellrnt job on translating the series, than k you so much. 46. Thanks Kat for your summary!
I still don't get why people are saying 77 is logical for it to have a Shizume ending when it's so clear in that chapter that she's in love more with her memories with Shishio rather than the present him and that they're heading for a closure. If the author really intends to write the initial ship, she should have resolved it chapters ago (cause hey, I don't think the issues between Shizume can be magically resolved in 2 chapters and it would be 10x rushed if it did go that way.)Mazume has been developing from the very beginning and there are way too many moments of them that supports the ending. It's a slow burn kind of love that was built from friendship and trust. Had you paid attention to the narration of the 78 translation, Suzume mentioned that she has been falling for Mamura way back before but she just couldn't accept that her feelings are changing. It's not that easy to let go of the past, you know? But yeah, I understand shippers like to see what they like to see.For me, the only thing was rushed here was Mamura's backstory (which should have a chapter/side story on its own.) Other than that, the Shizume closure and the Mazume ending isn't; but that's just my opinion. I already saw this ending coming and I'm really happy with it.

  47. so dorky, boring, kind and safe couple wins over doki doki couples

Chunchun has to decide: The one she loves or the one that loves her.

Correct me if my understanding is wrong. It was a tough one for her but tbh, There's a thin line difference between pity and like. It seems like she "fell in love" with Mamura because she doesnt want him to get hurt anymore. See what I mean? she doesnt want Mamura to feel how broken she felt towards Sensei (unrequited love) because she knows how much it hurts. And it doesnt do justice to Mamura since he's so kind and martyr and etc.

For sensei,I think he learned a lot this time. He was over thinking things (which I think is good) about their future together.

I hope Im not looking much into the story plot

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, you can say it that way. Maybe, it is pity-whatever..but thinking about it, it really depends on the person. 'Dorky, boring, kind and safe' can be preferred to dokidoki if the latter tends to make one cry all the time due to whatever unintentional/intention hurts.

True, it can be a thin difference..but then, she says that all the feelings she felt with Mamura is 'love' so I'll just take her word for it. Those, feeling uneasy when he doesn't touch her hand, dokidoki when they almost kiss, etc. She can also 'pity herself' because 'she doesn't want to get hurt anymore'. =P

Possible..though when she left to go see Shishio. I got the impression that she doesn't care about not wanting Mamura to feel how broken she was after that unrequited love. She did go to check if she still has feelings for Shishio, right?

True..and hopefully, he won't do that again - lying when answering a very serious question. =P

  48. And also, one of the reasons why I can't accept the ending is that Suzume's uncle never told her the real reason why Shishio broke up with her. :/ I can't believe this manga ended with her being clueless about it.

I'm glad there are mangas like Horimiya that can heal broken heart from the pain of love triangle stories.

    1. Hm..does it really matter if she knew about it? I think it is better for her not to know it rather than make Shishio more awful in her eyes. Just because her uncle objected, he says okay, and rejected her by lying to her. He easily gave up. He could have tried and convince him..like in some other manga but he didn't.

  49. It seemed like a lot of consistency and realism was sacrificed for the sake of keeping the tension around who she was going to pick. We needed far more proof that Suzume loved Mamura without the constant shadow of Shishio and Suzume's uncertainness.Mamura is a good and likeable character and I know most Shizume fans would have easily accepted the Mazume canon if they believed in it more. Where is Suzume's smile??? I want to see this again http://mangafox.me/manga/hirunaka_no...2/c012/20.html

Well I will say I'm glad I read it, despite my feelings on the ending. Shishio is one of my top ten fictional characters and the art is beautiful.

    1. True...well, it is the finale..and that kind of ending is common in love triangles.

Ya..but I guess she is limited to a few chapters so this is all she can pull off. Maybe if they have more scenes together afterwards.

      Is that so.

  50. she really is country bumpkin......she flew all the way from trip and leaving behind the person she loves only to dump the other person .......where is commonsence....and the kiss scene really creeped me ....
she always saw sensei always thinks about him......and suddenly dump him and goes for kissing scene in last pages////
basically there was no feel in suzume*mamura .....and what with mamura ...is he not got manly pride like sensei he should have supported suzume*sensei after knowing the truth the reason behind their breakup...but he shamelessly ....hide it from her...

    1. Ya..who paid for that trip. Hehe, is that so.

      Honestly though, as a love rival, would you say that? And even if Mamura told her, Shishio himself already rejected her. If I were Suzume and I learned the truth from Mamura, I would be really angry that Shishio lied when I'm asking him a very serious question...a confession. And his reason...because your uncle told me so. ^^;;

What is this 'manly pride' you mention of? I didn't see it. I got the impression that Mamura was supporting the two until Shishio blew it. Would a guy who loves Suzume still want her to be with the guy who kept on making her cry, lied and rejected her feelings that she was so heartbroken that she went back to her hometown?

Maybe if it is a different circumstance, I would agree with you about hiding the truth but in this case, after what Shishio did, I won't fault Mamura for it.

    2. I love both Mamura as Shishio . But Kat, the reason to lie to Shishio Suzume , not only was the guy , if you remember when they went to the shrine Shishio he noticed strange Suzume , he said that if he was the reason for her to act weird. Here we note that the complications of having a forbidden relationship will affect Shishio Suzume and realized that, for this reason Shishio decides to sacrifice his love for the welfare of Suzume .

      Sorry for my bad English

    3. Yes, true, but in the end, he threw that away and went after her again when he learns that she is going out with Mamura. Hm..now I realize that he must have really decided on that rashly. ^^;;

I don't think that is a good reason to lie either. He could have told her like, I like you but right now, it isn't okay..can you wait until you graduate..or if you still like me when you graduate, then let's be together. Something like that. At least, tell her the real reasons rather than say, the feelings aren't mutual. Then, later on, say, actually..it is... Of course, the story won't end up this way if he did =P

No problem, it is fine ^^

  51. really bad writing of story.......
This is actually the very first time I'm wrong about an endgame couple in a manga, ever. I'm not even talking about what I wanted to be the endgame, but what I expected based on analysing the characters behaviour and psyche. There were many times I knew that, even though I prefered one couple, the other was more likely to or absolutely going to happen. This was not the case here.
In regards to HnR, I'd always liked Shizume better and considered them to be what the autor was writingabout. Reading that last chapter made me feel extremely unconfortable. It made me question, first, my reading skills. After checking that and regaining some confidence back, I can only tell you people: this was really bad writing. That makes me very disappointed now, because this feels like a huge waste of time. Unfortunately, this will not be something I'll carry with me. Quite a let down.

    1. Is that so.

Quite a contrasting opinion from the others who guessed the ending based on the series as a whole, gut feel, etc.

  52. I saw a Mazume ending since that extra chapter collaborated with HIbi Chouchou. And based on how almost half of the story shows a Mazume progress, this is not surprising but OMGGG MOEEEE~ overload >.<

She might seemed like very indecisive but c'mon guys there are things you won't realize until you're in that position. There really are just people that fall in love with the person who was there when they're coping with broken heart. And like what Sensei said, she won't go out with Mamura half-heartedly as she is not that kind of girl. I personally like stories like this, it shows how strong the lead is by moving on without the person they once thought they couldn't live without. Also, it shows that there really are plenty of fish in the see hahaha.

Anyway, my ship is sailing!!!!!! <3
Thank you for your summary, Kat! You're awesome!

  53. When I got spoiled by the ending, I was a Mazume but couldn't believe the ending. I actually thought it would be Sensei that she chose to the point, I would be prepared for it. Some part of me wanted Sensei to be her day time shooting star. After reading your comment about the last chapter, I rethought about the ending. Is this actually a forced ending? Or is this the true ending? If it wasn't the true ending, I would get mad. But since its unknown, I will let that slide. I would of cried no matter who she ended up with, I realized. Your comment made my day, thank you for translating!

    1. Well, cyberidolmelany..let's just assume that it is the true ending. Forced..let's just say that it is common with love triangles. Someone suddenly gives up. Someone suddenly realize that, actually... And stuff like that. Honestly, I find it somewhat unnatural that she is going back and forth just to confirm her feelings but then, well, probably for the story's cliffhanger/climax.

Thanks for reading and glad to hear that ^-^

  55. Hi, I really enjoy your "decryption" of the last chapter of HnR,

What I mean about decryption is that you manage to convey more feeling (wayy more) and understanding of the big picture than just me reading the scanlation alone.

Last night after finish reading HnR it left a hollow feeling through my stomach, after days of uneasiness lingering in my mind and heart (as i just finish Yasashii Sekai no Tsukurikata). It happened before years ago after finishing Asatte Dansu, left somewhat bad taste in my mouth for days.

I'm a part time illustrator and dream of my own seinen manga (someday).

What happened in the last chapter of HnR (and in fact that I dont quite like it) seems too rushed (although they do hint it couple of chapter before). Mamura flashback feels kinda forced (perhaps it should be hinted during Mamura vs Sishio confrontation) the settings also not as refine as I imagined it would be. I understand that in the end Suzume will have to choose One and this situation it's 50/50. but it's not WHO she choose that bug me its HOW they (mangaka+editor) choose to end.

After being confounded like this I cant help but to REAFFIRM MY OWN IMAGINARY MANGA ENDING. I always know how my own story will end (theres no way in the world I'll end it any other way!) but HnR force me to rethink my strategies. I need more resolute and polish finish.

Reading well written manga (or any oher media) made me wonder how mangaka brainstorm their story and how much editor decision would have affect the outcome. Well in the real world it's not going to be child's play.

Thanks to Kat for easing my wound (LoL), reading your definite extraction of the last chapter. Made me realize I'm just vexed, when theres so much more to realize.

BTW is there any theories how they come up with the end of HnR?

    1. Glad to hear that, Izwan ^-^

Hm..so you have a heavy emotional investment on this series.

      Oh..good luck with that ^^

True..it was kind of rushed and usually, in love triangles, this happens. Someone just drops out of the game and it's the end. It always happen in the last chapter. Perhaps, it is because readers will automatically drop if one's pairing didn't push through = what's the point of reading it if the ship isn't going to sail. Something like that. And, that's my theory.

I guess it depends. Based on observation, it is important to be in the 'right' magazine for the planned story. For example, you plan a bad ending and the general readers of the magazine won't accept it = low volume sales so it might get rejected. There might be readers who'll write hate mails.

There is also a factor of what if it isn't selling well..it either stops midway or have a super rushed ending. Indeed, there are many factors as you mentioned, how much control does the editor have with the outcome and how much can the mangaka insist on what s/he want. And, I think the readers can have an effect too on how they regard the story and the characters which do translate to sales.

      No problem ^^

Well, aside from what I mentioned above about love triangles, I would assume that it is possible deliberately delayed the inevitable between Shishio and Suzume to drag the series on and make her move on to Mamura. At that point, it isn't really good to just be 'on a rebound' with Shishio that she is with Mamura. I'm assuming it is to keep the 'good girl' image. Probably Mamura fans are a lot? And won't forgive Suzume if she hurt their Mamura.

It would appear that she is fickle like in most stories like this if she goes back and forth. So, just end it rather than keep on dragging things.

In a way, somehow to appease the readers who are rooting for Shishio, her next series is once again about an older man and a high school girl which I'm betting will end with the two of them together.
