Last Game [Chapter 32]

The chapter starts with a narration about how perfect Yanagi is that he always is a winner so when Souma stands in front of him, he forever feels frustrated. Yanagi invites Souma to accompany him in drinking. Souma says that he isn’t an adult. [20 years old = adult in Japan] Yanagi says that he isn’t forcing him to drink so just come along. Souma wonders why he is feeling guilty when those two aren’t even going steady and he didn’t do anything bad. Souma agrees to go with Yanagi. At a small restaurant, there is an awkward silence before Souma starts to say that there is something he wants to ask him. Yanagi chokes on his beer when Souma bluntly tells him that he had confessed to Kujou. While Yanagi is coughing, Souma says that he felt that he should at least tell him about it and currently, he is waiting for her answer or perhaps, he should say that he’s letting her think about it. Yanagi groans. When Souma asked him about it, Yanagi says that it is nothing, he has somewhat guessed this. Yanagi thinks that no wonder Kujou is acting like that. Then, Yanagi asks Souma if this is for real, since she is Kujou, and is there something wrong with the way he looks at girls. Souma says that he wants to say that back at him. Yanagi groans again and says no, how come it is Souma. Souma asks again what it is, that he is like that. Souma tells him that from the start, he obviously doesn’t regard it as some mere formality exam. [<- not too sure on this one. ^^;] Souma thinks that’s right, at least he knows that between those two, there is basically no gap that he can intervene and at least, he still clearly knows that he basically couldn’t win but even so, he would still.. Somewhat drunk, Yanagi starts saying that he knows that Kujou would consult Souma if there’s something up, and then,  when he asked her what it is, she would tell him [Yanagi] that it is a ‘secret’ that she couldn’t tell him. He grumbles over how Souma and Kujou are talking while they were cooking but then, he couldn’t cook. After some more complaints, Yanagi caps it over how come life isn’t fair and there are a lot of things he doesn’t understand. Souma says that he understands what he is saying but for it to come from his mouth, he still wants to beat him up. [<- because Yanagi is rich and perfect and he complains about life being unfair] While drinking again, Yanagi says that the two of them are living an independent life that even if he started to work, it felt that it isn’t the same. Yanagi curses in frustration for he felt specially frustrated when he notice that he’s the only one who isn’t as good as someone. Souma recalls wondering how he’ll win [against Yanagi]. Puzzled Yanagi asks why Souma face is red. Souma kicks him and tells Yanagi to mind his own business.
Soon, they are walking home while Yanagi is steadying himself on Souma. Souma asks Yanagi if he doesn’t plan on confessing to Kujou. Yanagi chuckles, and says, confession, more than a confession, one time he told Kujou something that is far more like a marriage proposal and in the end, her answer is ‘let’s be good friends’. So, in the end, no matter what he says, as long as Kujou herself wasn’t able to understand, then there is no meaning to it. Then, Yanagi admits that honestly, Souma just confessed and for him to immediately follow and confess afterwards, he absolutely won’t do such a silly thing and fundamentally, his plan is to make Kujou confess first. Souma thinks that it is because Yanagi has that ailment that in every step, he is far from happiness. Yanagi says that also, Kujou is right now only thinking of Souma’s confession that it would be too pitiful to make her more distressed if he continues to pursue and strike. Yanagi tells Souma that even if he couldn’t compare to him but it doesn’t mean that he is going to admit defeat. Souma tells Yanagi that he talks big but in the end, he’ll just cry. Soon, the two are glaring at each other with slit eyes and chuckles. Meanwhile, Kujou’s mother came home and she is surprised that Kujou is still awake. Kujou says that she couldn’t sleep so she’s studying to calm down. When her mother asked about the barbecue, Kujou tells her that she bought it for her from the temple fair. Kujou is puzzled when her mother asks if she went to the temple fair with Yanagi. Before heading to take a bath, her mother tells her that lately, Yanagi hasn’t come by, so call him over to hang out. Kujou tries to say something but she realizes that ever since the takoyaki party, she wasn’t able to properly talk with Yanagi and the person she is with during the temple fair wasn’t Yanagi but Souma. She starts to wonder why she couldn’t say all that to her mother. Putting her head on the table, Kujou thinks that a lot of things had happened that it couldn’t fit in her brain. She thinks that there is club activity next week. She recalls what Yanagi told her about try thinking and regard him like that. She is puzzled what Yanagi is hinting on how she should think but she decides to study for now. She finds this harder to understand than solving a problem. Soon, at the club, Fujimoto is showing to the others the pictures that were developed from their trip. While the pictures are distributed, Yanagi arrives. He looks at Souma then they look away from each other. Yanagi asks Fujimoto where Kujou is. She tells him that she will be late because of work. A photo flies away that Tachibana grabs it and returns it to Yanagi. After Yanagi thanks her, Tachibana shyly backs away and Yanagi thinks that in the end, it’s very awkward.
Fujimoto says that since they have time since it is summer break, how about they go by the river side for some observation. Souma notices glum Tachibana. While walking to the riverside, Souma asks Tachibana what happened between her and Yanagi since obviously, the attitude isn’t the same. Tachibana asks what it has to do with him and shouldn’t he be thinking of himself. To Tachibana’s surprise, Souma tells her that he had confessed. She asks when. He says during the summer camp. She asks if he is already rejected. Souma exclaims that he wasn’t, not yet. Tachibana asks how come he changed state of mind. He tells her that didn’t she say that ‘as long as there is a strand of possibility, no matter how humiliating, one shouldn’t give up’ and he thinks that it is true for there are also times that one shouldn’t run away and even if he can roughly foresee the final outcome but it is also good to struggle in a difficult situation. Souma credited Tachibana for it and thanks her. Souma tells her to use her own way, and good luck [/gambatte]. To his surprise, Tachibana admits that she was rejected and basically, it is impossible to lean on herself. She says that despite wanting to do her best in reducing weight to become cute that time when she broke away from the fat little girl mentality, it seems that in the end, it like a waste. She basically just wanted to upgrade her worth with hopes that Yanagi would pay attention to her but Yanagi.. She recalls Yanagi telling her that it doesn’t matter to him if Kujou is not remarkable or beautiful and to hear someone saying to oneself ‘I like’. Tachibana mutters how it is not possible for Yanagi to like someone like her. Souma asks if she truly like Yanagi. Blushing Tachibana timidly says that she also doesn’t know, and speaking of like, she ought to say, she hopes to become like that, but he has already rejected her. Souma wonders who this girl is, her change is shocking. When Souma chuckles, Tachibana glares at him and says she’s furious and he ought to be quickly rejected. She wonders how come only Kujou is popular and she truly doesn’t understand. Souma asks how come she is still saying that. Tachibana says that it is because she dislikes that person. By the riverside, Yoshida finds out that they can light fireworks there so Fujimoto decides to buy some. While Yoshida hopes to give Fujimoto some firework memories, Fujimoto checks on the things that they have to get and buy like water bucket [to dip the fireworks after lighting them], dinner and snacks. Souma offers to stay there while the others buy the stuff. While Souma is hoping that Kujou comes soon during this time, it is Yanagi who came. After coming out of the toilet, Yanagi asks dismayed Souma where everyone is. Kujou hurries to the meeting place since things with Kana[佳奈?] took some time. She thinks that Souma is there so is Yanagi whom she still haven’t communicated with smoothly, but then, everyone is there so there’s no problem. Not..because what awaits her are the two guys alone.
Kujou nervously looks around and asks where Fujimoto and the others are. Souma says that they went to buy fireworks. Then, the two start to be timid with each other which irritate Yanagi. Yanagi orders Souma to buy some juice drink from the farthest convenient store. Souma refuses and says that didn’t he say not long ago that he’ll keep watch. Yanagi asks if he has ears to listen, he only said that he won’t confess. While they kept quarrelling, clueless Kujou offers to go buy the juice. The two guys want to come along. Yanagi grabs Kujou and tells her to choose him, he’ll accompany her. Souma takes Kujou away from Yanagi and tells her not to mind that guy, they should go. As the two insist on bringing ‘him’ with her, Kujou is getting confused on what to do. They heard Fujimoto and others arriving, so Kujou quickly ran off to Fujimoto, who asks her what happened. The two guys think that Kujou ran away and realize that they went over the top. Soon, Kujou is lighting some fireworks with Fujimoto. While drinking, Yanagi is looking at Kujou and thinks that she is always sticking around with Fujimoto since then but then, their actions a while ago is truly childish and strictly intimidating her. He wonders what to do with her and is it really okay for her to be like that. Better not to hesitant or she’ll run to Souma’s side but then, he won’t let her do that. And, speaking of that, how come she couldn’t quite know about stuff regarding love. When Fujimoto goes to Yoshida and tell him not to wave around the fireworks, Kujou tells herself to pull herself together though she couldn’t help but run away. She decides to temporarily put the Yanagi problem at the side for she must think of the Souma thing carefully. That’s right, think of Souma--.. And she turns around to notice that Yanagi is looking at her. She turns around and finds it strange, why he is strictly glaring at her. She assumes that it is her imagination. She turns around again and sees that Yanagi is indeed looking at her. Well, Yanagi is unconsciously looking at her and wondering about not understanding how Kujou thinks of Souma compared to her attitude towards him, what’s up with that. Looking away again, Kujou wonders why, is it because she treated him with that attitude so he’s angry. What is he thinking and in the end, what is she in his eyes. Her fingertips seem to be shaking when she obviously isn’t looking at his eyes. She is only been watched attentively by him that’s all and she’s only in his line of sight. Everyone is surprised when Kujou covers her ears and shouts out loud. Fujimoto goes to her and asks what happened, is she truly okay. Puzzled Kujou says that it is nothing. Flustered Kujou thinks that right now, she obviously should be sincerely thinking of Souma.
Comment: This shows that even if some person is perfect and everything, there are still things that one can win against him. =P It is amusing that it seems Souma and Tachibana has reversed their roles. Tachibana unexpectedly has given up after what Yanagi told her during the camp. I guess she did a lot of reflecting over it during the rest of the summer break. On the other hand, Souma is the one who would continue to pursue even for the heck of it since he already knows the outcome. Hehe, at least, some satisfaction in seeing Yanagi become nervous over a seemingly potential threat in him? And, from what Yanagi is saying, I guess the mangaka won’t do another confession from him. It will be something different and I hope it is better and romantic. Yanagi also plans to give Kujou some space in order not to confuse her but then, he would probably do everything except a confession which he did at the riverside to keep Souma at bay. He is right though that Kujou has to know what love is or else, what he says is meaningless. I do wonder if there is some other reason for Kujou not to know about love. My current theory is that it is because she is more on logic and everything so she couldn’t comprehend something abstract. Of course, there is the usual ‘clueless about love’ thing and someone would have to tell her that what she is feeling is love. I’m not sure if there is something more to it like something more serious since this series is somewhat of a love-comedy rather than a drama. Anyway, aside from escaping to studies and to Fujimoto, Kujou would have to deal with the Souma and Yanagi thing. Hehe, in a way, if one is resolved, so would be the other and she is unaware that both problems are connected. And, I guess Yanagi might do something more of a subtle approach, rather than forcing her to choose like what they did earlier. And, well, like Kujou, he’ll probably do a lot of thinking and wondering. Hehe, for Kujou to be that bothered with just Yanagi looking at her..that’s a good sign for him but he doesn’t know it. =P So, it would be a matter of time since the key is basically Kujou’s realization on what love is and who she loves. ^^ Scans by 红莲汉

  5. Well I hope this dose not turn into a win by loosing situation, ie Souma going out with Kujou first only for her to find him not to be enough with her ultimately going to Yanagi in the end. It would be drama friendly an extend the story ets; witch you'd want as a mangaka. The end of the chapter showed that possibility.

    ps. Thanks for the work.

    1. Ah..something like Yanagi being a 'second choice' or too much Souma x Kujou and only few Yanagi x Kujou at the near end?

True..it is possible for the mangaka to do that to prolong the series.

      Thanks for reading ^-^

  6. Looks like the author plans to drag Souma's confession out as long as possible. Such a waste since Yanagi and Kujou were finally moving in the right direction before it. I guess it's time to take a break from this one for awhile since all this focus on Souma bores me to tears.

  10. Hi Kat! I appreciate the regular updates. I really enjoyed reading the first twenty chapters of Last Game but then the slowness of Kujou is simply annoying. I know her family background and selfless motivations have something to do with her lack of care for romance but I just couldn't bear the fact that she's completely oblivious about her feelings. I am aware that there are girls who choose not to confront their feelings and flee, but I am quite sure that these girls acknowledge their emotions of love or attraction. Some shoujo titles show weak heroines who mentally acknowledge their feelings despite the slowness in action. I will probably check on Last Game when it reaches its last chapter already. Hopefully, Kujou's and Yanagi's relationship has taken a larger step by then :)

Is that so. In Kujou's case, maybe someone should tell her what does one feel/act when one is in love. It doesn't help that she assumes what she feels for Yanagi is only because he's a 'special friend'. ^^; In a way, yes, totally oblivious about what love is and her feelings.

Well, by the last chapter, it should ^^

  13. Thank you for the update!

Darn, I feel really bad for Souma. He's trying really hard but since we obviously know what is canon...
But I really hope that he doesn't end up with Tachibana in lieu of not being able to be with Mikoto. I have this bad feeling that it's headed in that direction, and I know that her personality is changing little by little, but still...

  14. I am obsessed with this manga, waiting for the raws isn't enough. Thanks so much for what you have done. >_<!!!

Also, did you get the vibe that Koujo feels overwhelmingly uneasy around Yanagi but just "inquisitive" around Souma? I mean, knowing the author, there is a commonality of tragedies where the initial love affair is inversed. I don't know what I would do if Yanagi turned to Tachibana and Koujo turned to Souma! :c

    1. Thanks for the comment, Jakkob ^-^

Is that so. Well, it can be thought of in a different way. Because there is love, one doesn't act 'normal' and if it is a friend, things are just somewhat 'normal'. Well, it used to be normal with Yanagi until quite recently =P Hm..given Yanagi's personality, I do wonder if he would still entertain thoughts about Tachibana after he had rejected her. Because his love for Kujou has been years, I don't think he can easily switch either unless there is a hug time skip.

Anyway, we'll see..even if I think this is a fixed couple series.
