Kimi ni Todoke [Chapter 90]

Kent meets up with Ayane. He is very happy since she took the initiative to call him out since it is quite rare. Ayane apologizes that it is sudden and for disturbing his studies. He assures her that it is alright and she can call him anytime because he is her boyfriend. He happily says that he feels very happy that he can see her. He asks her if she wants to see him. She blushes a bit. After a pause, she says, ya. Kent kept on saying how happy he is for she had found time for him so quickly. Ayane didn’t reply. Kent starts saying about finding a place to sit but then, it is totally alright if the two of them walk together whether strolling nearby or go to some place. Ayane just repeats what he said, ‘totally alright’. He glances at her and looks thoughtful. Kent changes the topic by asking if Ume has calmed down. She says ya so Kent is glad about this. Ayane recalls Ume’s anxieties over failing. Kent has already started walking again when he notices that Ayane isn’t walking. He looks back at her and she says that she felt that Ume is very uneasy, studying very hard that her sleeping time has shorten. Kent notices how Ayane is tightly holding the strap of her bag. Ayane says that she thinks that she and Ume are a bit the same. Becoming somewhat serious, Kent asks if she got the recommendation. She tells him that perhaps, she must do it up to that degree since ordinarily, for her to attain a recommendation is a guarantee, and she ought to be able to be more relaxed. Kent says that he thinks that she is a bit too nervous. This surprises her. Kent tells her to depend more on him and couldn’t he eliminate her anxiety. He says that ever since going steady with her, he always hope that he could at least do this one thing and the same with studies. He starts making suggestions like leaving everything behind her mind and she picks a day to have fun. Ayane tries to interrupt but Kent continues to say that if she feels uneasy not doing it, then they do it together that perhaps, there would be some unexpected progress and perhaps it is an opportunity to take a breather. He says that if she puts out a lot of effort for a long time, it would lower her efficiency so rest occasionally.
He starts suggesting to study at the library or perhaps, his house, or her house since he hasn’t gone there yet. Ayane quickly apologizes and exclaims that she couldn’t concentrate if she doesn’t study alone. This surprises Kent that she apologizes and says that it isn’t that.. Kent says that it is alright and as much as possible he won’t go near her too much, or perhaps, just a little bit. Ayane says that she isn’t referring to that. Ayane is surprised when he tells her that he’s very worried. Ayane admits to him that she’s very perplexed. He asks her what it is. She says getting the recommendation or taking the exam. She always plan to get the recommendation and even if she thinks of that but..there is some other university that is always entrenched in her mind. After he pauses, Kent asks where. She tells him at Tokyo’s J[dai] University. She looks at Kent’s expression. She is surprised by his surprised expression. Ayane thinks that she’s wrong[/made a mistake]. Still in disbelief, Kent stutters why Tokyo and when she said ‘always’ since when..? When he said that he is also going to Sapporo, when they become third year, during the three-way interview [with parent and teacher] or filling up the aspiration form. Or, after, when they started going steady. Ayane looks tense and admits to him that it is earlier on. Kent laughs it off so she is studying really hard. Holding to him, Ayane tells him to listen, there is a high possibility that she’ll fail and not get in, she fundamentally planned to go to Sapporo, she fundamentally want to strive for the recommendation so since first year, she always maintained her good grades and besides, he is also there so in the end, Sapporo is better. Then, she says, no..she only..wants to say it a bit, that’s all.. She starts to recall how Sawako cheered Ume on, and Pin telling her that it is her choice that choses her future, because she can still stir things up, and what kind of answer she wanted to get. While walking home, Ayane wonders what kind of answer she is seeking from Kent, what he thinks after hearing that and isn’t this something one can understand with just one thought. She thinks, it’s too mean and she’s so foolish.
Ayane arrives home. Her mother greets her and says that it’s quite late. She tells her mother that she won’t be going to cram class for actually it isn’t necessary and she got the recommendation. Her mother says that before, Ayane would always sleeping time is this and that but lately she always study until midnight that even if she [mother] want to tell her to sleep but then, before she [mother] is also like that so she didn’t mind her. She tells Ayane that if she doesn’t want to go, it doesn’t matter to her but since Ayane wants to give up, then don’t avoid the responsibility of choosing to give up and she should go settle[/finish] it. Ayane wonders giving up. Recalling Pin[?] asking if she did something that she put her whole out effort, Ayane says it isn’t so, from the start, because from the start her goal is striving for the recommendation. It is school again. Ryu is absent since the pre-selection has started and it feels quiet without Pin. [<- Pin went with Ryu or Pin is just absent?] During lunch, Kent invites Ayane to eat bento together. She says ya. Sitting at the courtyard, Sawako praises Shouta for his grades went up in the mock exam but Shouta doesn’t think that he can get recruited[/enrolled] with that result. Sawako exclaims that it went up which is very important and there is a return for one’s effort. After cheering each other on, Shouta asks about Ume’s studies. Sawako happily says that it is progressing smoothly and the two of them are concentrating in studying. They start talking that it is going to be July soon and it will be preparing for the school festival. Sawako recalls what happened at the beach [when they have gone steady] and it is going to be a year soon. Sawako notices that he’s looking at her. Blushing, she exclaims what it is. He asks her if she remembered it, since he also remembered it..her classroom’s confession is.. She exclaims that it is embarrassing and calls him meanie[/mischievous]. He admits that he is a meanie, that she takes it back saying that she’s saying that without basis. He teases her again by saying that he’ll repeat what she said at that time. Blushing Sawako exclaims no and he’s mean. Shouta laughs. Then, some students are bidding the two goodbye. As Sawako waves goodbye, Shouta looks at her and looks up the sky.
During PE [I think], Kent calls Shouta to the side. Sitting by the grass beside Kent, Shouta asks him what it is. Kent asks him what he and Sawako usually talk about. Shouta says all sorts of things. Kent says that is natural but did they talk about college and are they willing to talk about it. Shouta asks him if there’s something troubling him. He tells Shouta that Ayane got the recommendation for the college she wants to go and he always planned that at Sapporo where they can be happily together but she is considering testing for Tokyo and that is the first time he heard about it. He couldn’t say anything but afterward, Ayane said that in the end, it is better to get the recommendation. Kent doubts that it is like that for she said that before they started going steady, she wanted to go to a Tokyo college. And, even if at the start of going steady, he told her that he’ll make her like him but does she truly like him. He is truly very uneasy and of course, he is very worried about Ayane who is concentrating in her studies to the point of being nervous[/tense]. But before he heard her say that she’s thinking over taking the exam, he was always worried how does Ayane think of him.  So he totally didn’t notice that it turns out that Ayane is always thinking about college. He has always been paying attention to her but actually, is he properly paying attention to her. Kent asks Shouta if his girlfriend is perplexed, what he should do, and what will he do if there is a possibility that they’ll be in two separate places. Shouta asks what he wants to do. Kent says of course, he doesn’t want to separate from her. Shouta shouts, ‘Don’t go!’ like that, it is fine to just say what he wants and ultimately, the decision is still with Ayane. “But, if you decided not to say it, then don’t say it.” As Shouta leaves, Kent says, “Don’t go!” Shouta turns around to him and Kent apologizes for he is just practicing a bit, so it is alright, just go. Shouta glances at Kent and tells him that he understands his feeling a bit. This puzzles Kent. Recalling about Kent not wanting to separate, Shouta thinks of Sawako. He thinks, “I understand[/know] but I’ve already decided not to say it.”
Comment: And, all three couples have a common problem = one of them has a goal and want more in life so there’s a high possibility that the other would leave. Should they stop their lover from attaining their dream or should they support even if they’ll be left behind? Chizuru had told Ryu not to go. Shouta has decided not to mention it. Kent is still deciding on it but it seems that he would also say do not go. Someone in baidu pointed out that it is because Chizuru and Kent don’t have a goal in life so it somewhat revolves around the person they like. I think Kent’s problem is a bit more complicated because unlike the other two, there is a big question mark on how Ayane feels for him. The way he questions her on when she decided to go to Tokyo, it feels like he is wanting to ask if it is because of him that she wants to go because earlier, she always have some reasons on why he cannot spend time with her – go to your house, sorry, I want to study alone, want to drink tea together, I’ll find time. Kent reminds me of those ‘dog/puppy’ heroines in other shoujos who kept wagging their tail at their lover who don’t really appreciate them. ^^; For me, it is quite hard to read/look at that type of scenes. I think Shouta’s advice is quite good since he is right, it really rests on Ayane because there is really a limit to what Kent can do and ask of her especially with their relationship like that. I’m not too sure about how it works here but I’m assuming that if she takes the recommendation which is a secured slot for the Sapporo college, she can no longer take the exam because she cannot have both and the results of the exams might come later on. The choice seems to be either-or, rather than take both and select later on. So, the recommendation is a ‘safe choice’ for Ayane and taking the exam without really knowing if she can pass or not into the Tokyo college, is a risk. For now, it seems that she is going to take the recommendation and acting that it is all she wanted from the start. As for the answer what she is looking for, I wonder if she just wants someone to give her that ‘push’ to believe in herself and risk this exam rather than regret it later on for not trying really hard. It is what Pin and her mother are mentioning but it seems there has to be something more like really convincing and inspiring enough to brainwash her and go for it. =P It turns out that Shouta already has some hints about Sawako possibly studying elsewhere even if she said that she won’t be leaving. And, for now, he had made up his mind not to say anything like ‘don’t go’ and let Sawako decide for herself because knowing Sawako, it might affect her decision. In a way, at least, there won’t be any blame on others but oneself, if it was the wrong decision. So far, Ryu and Ayane are not that definite since there is a possibility of not passing, but Sawako is a definite if nothing happens. Someone in baidu raised an interesting question though..how come Ayane already got a recommendation and Sawako didn’t..wasn’t Sawako supposed to be more intelligent than Ayane? It is amusing that this time around, it is Kent who is asking for Shouta’s opinion on his love problem and Shouta advising him. It make me imagine something funny like when they are older, the other three who were left behind, are drinking at the bar, and chatting about ‘being left behind’. Kent would be saying that Ayane won’t be returning soon because he suddenly learns that she wants to go abroad, and it is the first time he heard of it but since he loves her, he’ll always wait and be single until she returns someday. Shouta would be saying that he does see Sawako from time to time but she hasn’t returned back yet because she decided to further her studies like getting a masters degree and a doctorate degree but one day... Chizuru says that Ryu would only come back during off season of baseball since he joined the professional league though she gets to watch him on the television. =P Scans by 工作室

  1. This chapter was good. It really reflects high schoolers thinking. At least it reflected mine. What school should we go to after we graduate ? Will I be able to handle the studies here, or is it too difficult for me ? Is it really what I want ? And all other questions about one's future, because it's true that at this age (17-18), we have the minimum clues of what is life after school is finished and we start working.
Add to these thoughts the possible parting with your lover only makes the situation more difficult.
This is why I love Kimi ni Todoke, it has a realistic side unlike other typical shoujos.

Thanks for the summary Kat ! Keep up the good work and have a wonderful day :)

Kento and Ayane mmm like u said he's like dog/puppy I would love if she choose pin. I've always had some kind of vibe that they had something there.
Ryu and Chizu my fav couple. I actually hope Ryu will still leave the town to pursue baseball he will be happy with chizu in one way or another. I would like more ryuxchizu.
Sawako and shouta are cute but so boring ( In my opinion)

    1. Gonna agree with you. I found the main pair a bit boring for my tastes so the side pairings are what I follow and boy do I love Pin(and I am rooting heavily for a PinxAyane ending). RyuxChizu rocks(I am a Ryu fangirl too)

    2. Thanks for the comment, Lily ^-^

True, there is some vibe between them though whether it is romantic and they'll pursue it together..remains to be seen.

      Is that so.

  3. Other reality chapter. It often happens to people in real life. This mangaka is really good. Hopefully in next chapter will not be a "depress topic." Thanks for the summary! <3 Tika

  5. I see that some people find Kazehaya x Sawako pair boring. But for me, it's beautiful.
I guess because shoujo manga is full of overboard drama that this type of relationship is underappreciated. (like Akagami no Shirayukihime)

    Here's a nice quote:

    1. That's a beautiful quote, Sanzy ^^

Possible reason..and maybe also, the pacing of their relationship? Since I don't read Akagami, their relationship is similar with Hibi Chouchou.

  6. thank you for the resume !! for my part my fav couple is without hesitation : ryu/chizu of course because they sounds much more realistic to me than sawa and shouta for ex even if I like both of them. Sometimes Sawa and Shouta are a bit predictible which makes them boring from time to time but still they're cute. And for ayane & Kent couple i think that ayane is kind of difficult to understand but I won't say that she don't like kent, she just need to acknowledge herself first. So for me he's not her puppy he's just there for her that's all. And let's suppose that something happen between Pin & Ayane it's just not realistic pin is 26 or 27 or 28 and ayane 17/18 common people who will date is teacher while being an highschooler it's just too much lol

    2. Thanks for reading ^-^

Is that so. Hehe, well, he's not her puppy but he acts like one =P

Not realistic..yes, but in shoujo, there are a lot of teacher-high schooler stories around so it isn't that surprising if it happens here..well, for me.

  7. this chapter reminds me of when I had to choose college ( I can kinda relate to ayane )
anyway I agree with pin when he said that this is the only time you have to worry about what you want to do in the future
that`s why i think it`s better if ayane thought about herself more and took the exam to the university she wants to go to,
(honestly taking the easy option always leave you with question of what if i`d tried a lil harder or at least took a step in that certain direction )
