Skip Beat [Chapter 210]

Narration: “I KNOW. This is to hold fast to the deal with ‘Tsuruga Ren’. *there’s no second time* One can say that it is as if playing some mischief, to accomplish an eternal wish. *as long as it isn’t found out* The moment when she wrung her brains with her utmost strength to come out with the best method *Ren telling her that if it is acting, it is okay no matter how many times but it isn’t so with private life* The doubt within my heart has also been undone by her. Repeatedly, when she has misgivings[/worries] over ‘Tsuruga Ren’, there is a very small sprouting, that fretting. ‘Tsuruga Ren is obviously Kuon but how come it is always only ‘Tsuruga Ren’ whom you treat quite well’ Obviously, I’m the one who is pretending to be someone else. But in case, I’m being distinctly treated [between him and Ren] by her and Tsuruga Ren is the precedent, all the more I feel fretful. After all, I’m quite stubborn [/headstrong]-- --But, I was wrong. She didn’t simply only specially treat ‘Tsuruga Ren’ although categorically it is possible that it is a bit not the same, but she treat them equally, whether it is Kuon or even ‘Tsuruga Ren’, [both of them] as ‘unrivalled [unique] existence’.” Corn looks at Kyouko, looks sideways then closes his eyes. He thanks her and asks if this is truly okay even if he was the one who had proposed this and from her position, doing this kind of thing would make Ren angry if it is exposed although he did tell her that it is okay if it is not exposed. Still clasping her hands, Kyouko tells him that she treated this as paying a corresponding price. She says that for her who had already lost her purity and holiness, and she dread not listening to the voice of god again. She tells him that it is just that if she were to say, for her, this little thing, compared to not being able to be god’s emissary, it is more important for her to do this bit [of thing] for him. “Looking back, I wasn’t love by my mother and got betrayed by the person whom I’ve offered all of my heart’s blood [/life’s painstaking effort]. My life absolutely can no longer be called full of happiness and light. But I become aware that these experiences, all of it have essentially made me into what I am right now. Actually, if by rights, I’ve been taken good care of by my mother, then it is impossible for me to be like that and given my heart to that person [Shou]. And then, I also wouldn’t have given that person consideration and acted without hesitation in changing one’s address. And then, after being betrayed by that person, in order for my heart to ascended magnificently and knock on the gates of the church, I’ve started to study everything regarding this current profession. Deeply in my heart, it echoed the way of thinking about wanting to do it to the extreme. And in the end ..”
Kyouko blushes and continues, “I also wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet that –sama [/that man/gentleman]. ..Merely thinking that this created a turning point for my encounter with that –sama, I cannot be grateful enough to that person..” This surprises Ren that he said for her to be grateful, did she already forgive that thing. “No..Forgave THAT PERSON?” Kyouko looks at him. Pause. She says that it can be done because the ‘priest’ is a person who can keep one’s body and heart [/spirit] holy and pure so from the start, she doesn’t have a tiny bit like ‘cannot forgive’ negative type of feeling. Corn is speechless. Kyouko says, “..the most important thing is, Prince Corn, that in the middle of the path I’m walking, no matter how many times I felt sad, and no matter how much I’m depressed, the fact is the only thing that listened attentively to me and always encouraged me are the memories that you gave me and also the magical stone. No matter how many times I fall down, you’re the one who gave me strength to stand up. Regarding these, I want to pay you back and surely, this is human reason, right..?” Corn protests again if this is okay for there is no need to do the priest job up to that extent. She assures him that it is no problem and everything will be alright. She tells him that one should just never give up and it is bound to open up a successful path. Then, Kyouko timidly says that –sama knows about how very important is his [Corn] existence to her as well as about how they got to know each other during childhood. “At the early stage, it is only with that –sama whom I've told everything. So even if he knows, regarding this thing, I think he also won’t be angry.” Corn is shock upon realizing that ‘-sama’ is Ren. Kyouko continues, “I might as well say that he ought to approve the choice I’ve made, that it is right. As long as..everything is for you..” Corn recalls Kyouko saying about thanking Shou for causing them to meet. Kyouko calls out to him when he is spacing out. Corn recalls the time when young Kyouko asks, “—are you a fairy--..?” He mutters, “..I really..” He thinks that he can understand if it is the current him— Puzzled Kyouko asks what is the ‘I really’.. He says god, *pause* the ‘-sama’ she is talking about is.. Kyouko says that of course, it is her lord. Corn thinks that Ren is a heavenly person – god∙buddha = lord. He says god’s mercy, for he thinks that right now, it seems that it can be accepted..should be.. This surprises Kyouko that she asks if he meant that curse can probably be lifted. Corn says yes. Putting his fist on his chest, Ren says, “--..I can feel it--..” He kneels on one knee and looks up to her. He says, “—if possible, can you give me the kiss of rebirth..?”
This surprises Kyouko. She blushes and her heart is beating fast. She exclaims of course, she has already prepared her heart and there’s no risk at all. Corn closes his eyes and says that he’ll leave it up to her. Kyouko blushes really red. She closes her eyes and opens them. She starts trembling that she reminds herself that she is a priest. She clasps her hands together and goes into priest mode. Walking towards Corn, Kyouko starts saying for the heart to be calm, and pray together with her. “-Lord, please give this person in front of me, to have a future from here on. Look after him as well as the seed[/sprouting] of hope.” She bends close to him and lightly touches his lips with hers. Blushing really red, she quickly backs away. Corn isn’t moving. She is puzzled for there is no reaction. She calls out to him and says that it is over. He didn’t react. He looks sideways and asks, ‘..uh..?’ Blushing Kyouko shouts that it is already over. Corn falls down on the floor. She starts shouting for Corn and asks what happened, could it be that not only was the curse not lifted, on contrary, it [violently] left. She kept on asking him how he is. With a ‘totally not satisfied’ expression, Corn says that it is still not enough. Kyouko slaps the side of his body that he says that hurts. She scolds him for making her worried and he’s so mean. She asks what’s up with that for him to think that it isn’t enough, it’s quite unfair and as a beginner, what he asks for is quite high. She also tells him how she put in all her spirit and will power in giving it her all.. She stops and asks if he is referring to the curse, it wasn’t lifted. Corn looks at her and recalls her telling him about realizing that all those experiences is for creating the current her. Corn recalls how he held the gem in his hand at the set when he was young, and all of the other memories that were necessary for him to be where he is now. He closes his eyes and thinks that regarding that, he can indeed understand that part *with his father* but there are some things that no matter what, he doesn’t want to acknowledge. *Rick’s death* "Before, a world renowned heart psychological adviser had said that [watching a Buddha priest-type of guy on the television] At that time, *a scene of Ren who seems unmoved* -however, I know as far as the current me is concerned, everything that I’ve encountered in my life *Young Kyouko asking if he is a fairy* isn’t by chance, but rather a necessity. *Kyouko shouting that it is for revenge against Fuwa Shou*” Corn notices her holding his hand that is on his belly. She calls out his name but stops. Corn thinks, “I’ve already denied it. I can no longer *scene of bloodied Kuon;  Corn holds Kyouko’s hand with his other hand* deem that it is necessary, as far as the current me is concerned--” Kyouko is delighted to see [her] Corn smiling again [according to baidu people because it didn't seem like smiling to me at first ^^;]. Next chapter will be out on April 19th in Japan.
Comment: I love this chapter and the narrations are important so I’ve done that in detail and hope I got them right. ^^ It is so subtle with all the talk yet strong in impact. Even if it is a quick peck, I think it served its purpose and that is to free Kuon from the curse. He seems to have come to accept the ‘current him’. Maybe we get a better kissing scene when the two finally admit they love each other ^^ In a way, the mangaka fulfills the wish of those who wants to see a kiss and making it a quick peck to not make Ren’s fans angry that she’s kissing him as Corn = no romantic implication. ^^; The theme of the chapter, about moving on and how everything had a purpose for them to end up where they are now and meeting each other again, is really nice. Of course, that conversation pretty much helped in ‘lifting the curse’ and the ‘kiss’ is just like icing on the cake. In Ren’s case, if he wasn’t angry with that director when he was young, he presumably wouldn’t have gone to Japan and met Kyouko. If that didn’t happen to Rick, he wouldn’t have gone back to Japan again as Ren and met Kyouko again. In a religious point of view, it is like there is a divine purpose for everything in the end including the bad things that had happened before. One might not know it at that time, but later on, one will know upon recalling things back. A non-religious view would consider it as fate. It is amusing that it is Kyouko who somewhat made her life story as a fairy tale being a ‘priest’. At this point in the story and how Kuon had pretty much accepted what had happened, I think it is ripe for him to tell her everything. ^^ Hehe, I hope. It is amusing how Kyouko believed that Ren is forgiving and understanding over this. If Corn goes back to Ren, he would have to fulfill that expectation =P And yes, it is amusing that it is ‘somewhat thanks to Shou’ though for Kyouko to mention being a priest, I guess she isn’t quite ready to forgive him. Lol..ah, if Shou knew, I cannot wait to see his reaction over this among the other reactions that he would have but then, maybe Kyouko knowing who Ren really is would come first. And, I’m trying not to anticipate too much given the slow pacing of the series. ^^; Scans by 红莲汉

  2. aww, this chapter is lovely and I really got some tears in my eyes :3. I thinks it´s a huge step that Kyoko and Kuon are thinking the same, that all those bad things had to happen to let them meet again in Japan (though, Kyoko thinking so about meeting Ren ^^")

  4. Thank you soooo much for your translations!!! They are often late to translate the series and it is a pleasure to read what happens in the nice style of yours.
I too think that faith is really implicated in the story and the mangaka is really good at making us want to read more dispite the slow pacing of the story.
It is a bit annoying that the kisss happened through "Kuon" form but it wasn't really with feelings (I'm a big Ren fan). I hope the story moves on a bit more in the next chapter.
Again thanks for the resume :) , Jana

  9. Kat, Thanks so much for the summary, first thing I did today when I realized the date was to find your site.
I really can't wait to see what "Ren" is going to do. I'm guessing he's pretty happy at this moment so it'll be interesting to see how he's going to react to Kyoko. Is he going to find a way to remove that "sama" image she has of him, or will he want her to start liking "Kuon"? After all, the real him is Kuon. Even though I really love Ren, I think it's about time he gets jealous of Kuon since someone should cherish all of who you are, not just part of you.
    Thanks again Kat

    1. Thanks for reading, Evie ^-^ Hehe..is that so ^^

True..what he would do next. I'm assuming with those..he can just tell him who he really is.

      Indeed..so I'm thinking about him telling her so that in a way, those two would merge together as one - Corn/Kuon and Ren. Then, he can whisk her away to his kingdom and meet his parents..and they live happily ever after =P Ah..that might take a long, long time in our time. ^^;;

    2. I wonder how surprised Kyoko will be knowing who Kuon's Dad is (sensei was it?)

    3. Hehe, VERY ^^ And in a way, he would really be her 'father[-in-law]' ^^

    4. Its been a while, I've missed our discussions ;3

I agree, merging the two personas would be best, because while 'Ren' may have been an act at first, he has lived it so long it has become a part of him. Yet this does not mean he should forsaken his past and the cherished ones he has erased due to his pain.
She has seen every feature of him, and loves -or at least cares for in the case of cain- his various selves. So uniting them should conect the fusses of her love, and allow it to burn all the brighter. To trully know him is to truly love him, and I feel this is the next step they need to take in their relationship; I'm sure you recall our conversation on honesty, lol. At any rate, while this has most certainly been a fun game, here's hoping he comes clean XD

      Delete
    5. Indeed, Jeremy ^^

That's right..and since he is already at this point of 'accepting his past for it lead him to where he is now', it is a very good time to tell her the truth. And yup, hopefully, the mangaka doesn't needlessly drag this. More progress in their relationship ^^

      By the way, regarding what we talked about before regarding idols. I've encountered a manga = forgot which one, but it makes me think that this is what the fans think of idols/popular girls or guys in school. The fans said that the popular person shouldn't be monopolized by one person...s/he should be shared so that boy/girlfriend is selfish for wanting the popular person for oneself. That seems to be the mentality behind the 'no boyfriend' thing. ^^;;

      Delete
    6. Right? I think the biggest road block between the two of them, is that he could never accept himself, could never live with himself; because he was always blaming, and hating, the him who was (in his view at least) responsible for his friends death. But now that he's realizing everything is not so bad after all, that his past led him to this present, and his future, with her. Finally being able to forgive and accept himself, will be the dislodged keystone, the catalyst that finally topples the wall.

I've heard numerous variations of this theme, 'I cant have him, so nobody can', 'she's meant to exist as the perfect dream, so you cant destroy her purity', 'we all want him, thus nobody is permitted to have him, so no one gets hurt,' 'we're friends, so lets share'... but of all these concepts, none seem to take the Idol's wants into consideration, as if, 'because she's our dream, she must live up to our expectations' but no matter how you look at it; that's the true selfishness. Taking away the happiness of the one you admire, just so you yourself don't have to face the reality; that he/she does not, and will not love you, or by any extension, be with you. Sacrificing the wants of two people(who are mutually in love), just so everyone else can keep this false sense of ownership and security; no one gains true happiness from that. No, the only true happiness to be gained, the happiness that would otherwise be granted to the couple, is torn from them so that everyone else can live a lie, a half life.

      Delete
    7. And wouldn't you want the one you love/admire to be happy?

      Delete
    8. Yup, Jeremy so I think it is an important breakthrough for him and nicely developed to that point (without going too dramatic) using the fairy tale acting they are doing. So, hopefully, he really starts making his move on Kyouko ^^

Hehe, the 'I can't have him so nobody can' makes me think of some killer's mentality. True..it is forcing what they think on to the person. Interesting point..but correct me if I'm wrong, in case of idols, etc..weren't they popular because there are people who don't want to face reality and would like to 'idolize/worship' them with a certain perception placed on them? So, if the idols no longer fulfill that 'perception', they aren't that bankable anymore. Fans can be very fickle and well, in the idols/entertainment industry, there is always someone new who can 'fulfill that role', right?

      True, ideally, one would want the one we love/admire to be happy even if it isn't that happiness isn't going to be us. Of course, in real life, not everyone is going to be like that. And well, in the case of fans, I think it is kind of different way of viewing it. Hehe..I'm talking about the psychological point of view in trying to understand why they are like that. Of course, morally, it shouldn't be like that..so I hope you won't misunderstand why I'm bringing this up again. ^^;

    9. I think the other good point to mention here, is that in her acting, she came really close to confessing her love for ren, I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, saying someone is your most important person and that all the harships you went through were worth it because they brought you to him... well, that sounds like a confession to me, however indirect. Aaaand, Ren realized she was talking about him, so if he was able to get as much out of the confession as I did, I don't see why he wouldn't leap at the chance to make his own.

They are in japan... and its that mentality that I have a problem with, I mean, idols should be apreciated loved and enjoyed for what they bring to the table, their acting, voices, tallents, excetra. I mean, there's nothing wrong with having a crush on an idol, I just feel it shouldnt be to the extent that you manipulate their lives, no one should have that right, least of all a fan.

I know, and you have good points, I agree with all of them. you're anolizing the psychological aspect and I'm rendering its morality

    10. I hold none of this against you. ;) in fact, since you're my idol (in the art of cyfering scans) you have no right to date anyone but me ;P

...jk lol, but keep up the good work ^.^

      Delete
    11. Indeed, Jeremy..it does seem like a confession but it seems that because of Kuon's jealousy among other things, he didn't notice the implication..but then, her 'idol worship of Ren' blurs being romantic.

That's true ^^ And I agree. It does seem to be the dark side of such things in Japan. Also, with Twitter and technology, it can be quite overwhelming. Have you read Kanojo wa Uso wo Aishisugiteru? In that series, a newbie girl singer get chummy with a famous boy band..it made their female fans fuming = badmouthing, insulting on Twitter, etc and one fan wanted to destroy her reputation with gossips..just because of that..and that she'll be singing with the boy band in their concert. As if it is some unforgivable act...apart from jealous, I guess.

Hehe..well, you might start thinking that I'm defending that kind of behavior =P Lol

      Thanks ^-^

    12. Of course, there is that, so maybe it will be a while longer before we get a pure confession for either of them, still I'm very happy about the progress we've had these last couple of chapters, if not this chapter alone; from Kyouko admitting and accepting that she loves Ren, to Ren's acceptance of who he is, and his self forgiveness; things are finally looking up.

To be quite honest I haven't got that far in that manga as its developement and themes, manipulation and cheating, to name a few, leave a rather bitter taste. To say it annoys me is taking it lightly, lol. But yes, I understand what you're talking about, for the very reasons that you ascert as proof in point, are what drove me away from it; a somewhat dark shoujo indeed. Similarly, I would recomend reading Bakuman <3 <3, lol the last arch does a great job on covering the idol/fan relationship, and considering it is a shonen manga, it has a nice touch of romance and a truly informative subplot beneath its slice of life exterior. I really found myself cheering on the characters every step of the way; getting excited for them.

    13. No, lol we're not defending, but rather, exploring, or investigating if you will; forming hypothesis and conjuncture as to why such behaivor should occure. I completely understand as I'm doing much the same ^.^

Lol, its ironic that you're thanking me for thanking you; I have done not but feed my own selfish hunger for manga, it is you, who have given freely for others. lol, so this time I'm going to say 'thanks', and you can repply 'you're welcome' ;P

    14. That's right, Jeremy ^^ In a way, it keeps the series unpredictable...will it progress or not, in the next chapter? =P

Is that so..^^ Well, it can be a bit dark but then, not that dark yet for me =P Ah, I have read Bakuman but near the middle I think, got to busy to continue reading it..I think it is around the second season of the anime. Hoping that one day to finish it. ^^

      Glad to hear that. ^^

Haha..you're welcome and, thanks for the encouragement and for taking the time to read as well as commenting ^-^ Hehe, I do appreciate it when there are responses/comments from readers on the summaries I've done ^^

    15. Indeed, and I'm excited to find out XD

Ah, no, not greatly so, but enough to be annoying; especially the reocuring theme of the show business world stealing everything he cares for and stomping all over him; his manager stole his girlfriend, blondy stole his place in the band, and now blondy is moving in to steal his new girlfriend, who, despite suposably being in love with him, spurns all his advances even when she herself wishes to accept them. Its a one sided trash-the-male-protagonist fest, which, if not depressing, is a bit agrivating to say the least, lol.

Lol, for my three sentences you pen one, I appologize for dictating naratives all over your blog, let me know if I'm writting too much ;P

I stand corrected, though I hardly think my long, overblown, off-topic paragraphs are of any merit to your hard work. Rather, your site has been warped to a sort of debate port-of-call for me, a forum at which I may match wits with my skip beat addiction supplier, and find myself wanting. Which, is sadly, not what either of us has entended, yet undeniably enchanting. I think I need to break my hiatus...

      Delete
    16. Yup, Jeremy ^^

Ah, I see. Actually, I don't like the male protagonist. It does seem like everything is being stolen from him but then, I partly blame him for it and well, he also has a tendency to dig his own grave. Blondy didn't stole his place in the band, he offered it to Blondy on a silver platter because his self-confidence is lacking regarding playing the bass well. Indeed..but he also tends to put his foot in his mouth. ^^; As well as inconsiderate..etc. Actually, I think it is him who is going to steal everything from Blondy. If he wanted to, he can easily get his friends to kick Blondy out of his band and I'm sure his friends would gladly do so. He seems to be on the verge of kicking out Blondy from being the producer of his girlfriend's band and 'insult' him by making better suitable music for that band. In a way, I agree, it is kind of one sided trash-the-male..but not the protagonist. And, it does make me feel that way - depressing and aggravating.

Ah, it's okay ^^ I actually find the way you write interesting and insightful ^^

Haha, I see ^^ Nevertheless, such discussions and exchanges can be quite entertaining especially when it is about something that we commonly like and is interested on ^^

    17. Eh? Certainly he gave up his position in the band, but it was not that he lacked faith in his talent, but rather, that regardless of his level of talent, he would never be permitted to display it in public; forced to dance as a puppet, always taking the credit for others, never able to preform HIS own work (because he was told his own is not good enough)... no matter how you look at it, there are few insults that can strike an artist so deeply. Moreover, I don't perceive it as stealing should he kicked out his replacement, as it was his place to hold from the start. A band is more than just a group of talented musicians, its a group of friends, and to be honest, blondy never belonged in that group. It would be better for his career, better for his emotional and mental state, to set off on his own; either as a solo artist, or with a new band of his own; to build his own interpersonal connections, to find true bonds. For that too, is not only essential to be happy with your career, but absolutely necessary to succeed in show business. And, as for his first girlfriend being ripped from his clutched by the producer, I cannot see how you can blame him for that. To avoid obscene language, it was a callous ploy to improve his writing, to throw him into the black depths of despair and squeeze out every drop of passion. Since entering the world of show business, he has been nothing but a tool, a plaything of the producers, who see's only the means in which to milk him dry, never mind the fact that when all the moisture is gone, there is nothing left to sustain his body. As a romantic at heart, themes such as cheating and netorare never go down well with me, lol.

    18. Indeed, now I find myself burdened with two cravings, and thus a need to visit this site on a far more regular basis than a bimonthly calling. I have, no regrets. its quite fun talking to you ;P

    19. I agree, Jeremy, regardless of his talent, he won't be able to display it but then, if his friends can, why can't he? It has been his best friend's goal that they play the band together as friends. Perhaps, it also has something to do with his pride. As a composer, he would want for it to be played 'the best way' thus he gave up that position. Well, he ended up being the composer/producer-whatever in control the band from behind the scenes.

True..it isn't exactly 'stealing' if he were to be 'kicked out of the band' and I agree about that. He never belong there in the first place and it seems that he is regretting it. The thing is, I think he is indeed doing that..making a new band that is why he immediately took the offer to be the producer of Mush&Co. Unfortunately for him, the singer is Aki's girlfriend and the producer isn't too pleased with his composition. In a way, Aki even tried to 'lure' his girlfriend to use his song. Producer originally wanted Aki to be the one handling his girlfriend's band. So, I'm expecting that position to be taken from him soon and given to Aki.

Haha...I did purposely didn't mention that. That is indeed an awful thing to do by the producer. I'm not sure how far you have read of this series but apparently, his first girlfriend has some 'mental problem'. At first, the producer seem to do it because he wanted her but later on, it seems to be just to 'protect his investment/product'? ^^; Of course, morally wrong but for the producer to be where he is now..I surmise that he is pretty much a typical 'ruthless businessman' = everything for profit as you've nicely described ^^

      Hehe...same here, it's quite fun indeed ^^

      Delete
    20. Oh, I think it has everything to do with pride. I had previously listed a number of reasons detailing how he was being insulted, but you summed it up in a word, they were insulting his pride as an artist. To be honest, I too, would be pissed if forced to lip sync and pretend to play. Not only because they're telling me 'you're not good enough', but also because the work that is being recognized and praised as brilliant, or a masterpiece, is not even my own. Its the same reason I would never consider plagiarism, because -morals aside- as an artist, I want to make my own mark on the world; to touch and stir others through the power of my creation; anything less would be pointless. With that in consideration, forget blaming him for leaving, I honestly can't comprehend why his friends didn't back out as well.

Yes, well, blondy stepped over the line of the producer/singer relationship when he started pursuing her romantically, despite knowing, or perhaps even, because he knew she was taken by Aki. Given those circumstances, Aki has a right to become jealous and defensive, especially considering how susceptible Mush is to being controlled. Aside from being innocent and naive, her character is very fickle, and I think, had Aki stepped back it would have been the end of their relationship. However, I wouldn't say he 'lured' her exactly, as an artist he expressed his emotions for her by writing a song about her/to her, yet she refused to even listen to it, much less sing it. I honestly felt that was rather cruel; as if he handed her a piece of his heart and she tossed it aside.

Indeed, which is perhaps the main reason I do not blame Aki for leaving the band; for Aki, his past girlfriend, his band-mates, Mush, and even blondy, are all caged birds, spoon fed poison, so that the producer may profit off the sweet melody of their shrill death cries. Passion is powerful in music, and he is toying with their souls to ring out every last drop. Its not healthy for them to stay in that work environment.

    21. N-no, I, I don't check every couple of hours to see if you've replied... >.> That would be weird, right? lol

    22. Indeed, Jeremy but then, it depends if one is a true artist and not just an artist who wants to become rich and famous regardless of what method to attain it. In a way, it also has something to do with the people who listen and enjoy their work. Like in Mush&Co's case, they want her to lip sync because she might make a mistake being a newbie and they want it to be perfect. I recall reading before that music nowadays are 'beautified' like photoshopped using machines etc in the studio for the CDs to sell though it doesn't exactly sound the same/beautiful/perfect when performed live.

I agree with what you mean about wanting to make a mark, with one's own work, but it isn't exactly easy. Let's say the work isn't that great then would a lot of people listen to it? Is it great enough to make a living out of it? Or, one would have to make it as a 'side-job' instead. There is also the point of would you cater to what the people/masses want or what you want which might not sell well?

I think they didn't back out, nor did Mush & Co, because the temptation is really hard to resist. I've noticed that the producer tends to entice his new recruits at such a young age. I'm not sure if it is deliberate or well, you know, in the entertainment industry it is always looking for the fresh and young. If one is a teenager, and being told..you know you can be a singer/musician and I can make you famous, etc, etc..though your playing isn't at par so we'll have to substitute it with something better but the rest, is up to you. It is hard to say no when you don't know if there would be an offer/opportunity again later on especially if someone is already going to 'invest' on you even if you are not that great yet...well, that is more on as a musician and not as a singer.

Hm..in what part did Blondy stepped over the line? It is somewhat on the line but I didn't think he stepped over nor did Riko let him. In a way, it was still being producer/manager thing to me. Probably..I cannot really say but nevertheless, with all their flaws etc, they still love each other and everything else swept under the rug.

Ah..but it isn't a song dedicated for her, about her, to her and such..it is a song for her to sing. Upon hearing it, Blondy immediately knew. She refused to listen to it because she knew that she loves his music and would have immediately agree to sing his song and only his composed songs. She did made a promise with Blondy about prioritizing him/music than boyfriend. That was before Blondy knew who she really is. Also, again pride, she wants to become famous on her own without the help of her talented boyfriend. That is why Aki even suggested that they break up so that she can sing his songs.

      That's true..and unfortunately, It is quite true in real life. The series is showing the 'dark side' of the music industry and such things do happen. It is very cutthroat and the ones on top can be quite powerful and manipulative. It is indeed sad to see what happens to them when producers like that are finished with them. Amusingly, this side of the series is what keeping me interested in it since I'm not fond of the main couple. ^^;

      Lol..that would indeed be weird..

    23. I'll concede to that point: whether for stylistic reasons, such as modifying a tone to have a more electronic sound; or out of quality necessity, to patch up the faults in their singing, so that their voices flow smoother and sound more beautiful; there are few musicians today that do not use computers to tweak their voices to some degree. And when used in moderation or for stylistic purposes, it's not such a bad thing. But vocal artist who use it as a crutch, really make me question the quality of the modern music industry. Certainly the legends, classics and the greats of old -who's music is still listened to today- needed no such help, they got along just well without this technology. Yet even so, at least those who need their vocals mechanically enhanced can still say that it is indeed their voices, their singing, that we listen to, and enjoy. They can take pride in that much... which is far more than I can say for lip syncing.

Neither, to craft truly great work you have to write about what impassions you; kneeling to the masses will not help you reach your full potential, but nor can you ignore them. One must strive to refine their art, so that it is acceptable to all, regardless of whether that theme is in season. Of course its not easy, were it, it would not be called work. The only things in life worth obtaining must always be paid in sweat.

Well youths are certainly more impressionable, so I would not discount that. A mind that lacks knowledge and experience, will naturally put their trust in an older, authoritative figure. If the entertainment industry is the light all bugs are drawn to, he is the zapper waiting to strike. I can understand why the lure of grandeur would be hard to turn away, but I, as all true artist, strive for so much more, and would decline on a matter of principles. I believe Aki is like-minded in this regard.

Managers do not demand that you prioritize them over all else, nor do they regularly, if ever, enter your room. Not to mention dating your charge is one of the biggest taboos there is in the business world. You cannot deny he was pulling the moves on her.

Yes, he did write it for her to sing, however it most certainly dictated with his feeling for her in mind. I clearly recall how passionate he was when writing it, and how his band-mate told him it was not suited for his ex, or their band, because from the lyrics to the rhythm and even the tone, it was perfectly suited for Mush and no one else. You cant create such a piece without really thinking about/caring for the recipient. You are correct that she wanted to become famous without the help of her boyfriend, and as her boyfriend, he should respect that. But I think its really insensitive if not borderline callous to refuse to even listen to a song that he poured his heart into writing for her. Well, maybe I'm reading to much into it, but that is how I saw it.

Indeed, but there is always a solution to that; find a new producer, lol. ^.^ that is amusing. I'm not fond of their pairing either... namely because of how fickle a character Mush is. I feel Mush doesn't properly reciprocate Aki's feelings, and Aki is arrogant and self centered, due perhaps, to his insecurities that are centered around a certain producer. >.>

Noted, ill keep my strange tendencies to myself ;P rofl

    24. That's right, Jeremy. And well, these days, the competition is quite tough = all those boybands, idols, etc that other artists have to compete with. So, one would want to get all the help that one can get to get the attention of the potential listeners/buyers..well, in some cases in real life, doing provocative actions and such in music videos. But as mentioned, it depends on what type of artist one is or what is one's goal = to be rich, and popular or, it is because one wanted to express something and show it to people regardless if they'll like it or not.

Nicely put. Indeed, it is a more of a balance though ideally, more of one's own work and true, there's no easy way of getting there..and well, it helps if one already has the talent for it. ^^

Lol..a modern take on the flame that attracts the moths =P True..ideally it is that and rare these days who would abide by such principles.

Ah..but wasn't that 'enter the room' an invitation from the girl herself? Though, in order not to be misunderstood, it would be better to stay outside the room or decline such invitation. Hm..don't managers make you prioritize them as it would mean prioritize work over love life in order for you to succeed in the shorter amount of time? Though it may mean that one has to be a workaholic which is typical trait of a Japanese. Oh..it's a taboo..forgive my ignorance but alas, it seems that I've been reading too many fictional [shoujo] stories. ^^;; Indeed, I do not deny he is pulling the moves on her.

      I see your point. Well, the passionate thing didn't occur to me because he has always been passionate/engrossed whenever he is composing. ^^; I see..and well, she did kept the CD. Maybe to listen to it much later on? Ah..after she's really successful? ^^;;

True..but then, I had the impression that kind of producer are the more successful and influential ones because they don't exactly play fair/by the rules hence, they get ahead. As noted, it is all for money even if it leaves ruined lives later on. I guess it is because the industry is run like a business for profit rather than for artistry, etc? Ah, and I thought I'm the only one since most of the comments on the series is about the couple.

Lol..but then, we all have our strange tendencies ^^

    25. Indeed, and I suppose the true measure of an artist then, what separates the good from the greats: is not a matter of whether they chose to appease the public in the short-cut to success; or staunchly blow off the mainline needs of the masses -and whatever tides of glory that would be garnered therefrom- in the single minded pursuit of their passion; but rather, those who take the long brutal path, the road of balance, as you have so adeptly named. Those who can take what they feel, what they see, and present it in a pleasing matter, to stir and tame the industry with the fire from within, those are the legends that will be forever remember. And there is no doubt; it does require talent.

Thanks kat (-and, I suddenly feel the need to type your name, as you have began every entry with mine), my words are my own, however I'm by no means the architect of this modern take. Its been penned and illustrated countless times before crossing my eyes; of that I'm sure.

Ah... there I go rationalizing like an American again, lol did we not just have a discussion on how ill received idols with boyfriends were; of course their managers would take priority, as they're not supposed to be in a relationship in the first place. Lol, its fine, there is a great deal of such manga... particularly a number of Netorare wherein the manager uses his power in the industry and over the heroins career, to manipulate and effectively steal her from her lover, which, explains my distaste. Not merely because I think its wrong, as I do, but because its an over used plot archetype.

As I said, my vision may have been colored there, as I was searching for reasons to keep reading. So perhaps he was not as passionate as I would have you believe, but I certainly don't think he wrote that song without a great deal of thought for/towards her. I should hope so, assuming they don't break up before then. I think for their relationship to succeed they both need to do a little growing up.

No, don't get me wrong, I do not debate the success of such tactics. But I also refuse to believe there are not skilled managers who care for their employees and nurture them to stardom, rather than raise themselves to fame, through the commercializing of their star's demise. No, you're not the only one ;P

Dare I take that as an Invite? The gate is open boys, storm the castle!

      Delete
    26. True..Jeremy...though these days, it seems that most would rather go for the short cut.

Ah, is that so..^^ I think it's nicer to personalize a comment with the name of the person = who bothered to sign in/write their names/nicks, in contrast to anonymous.

Hm..though I didn't seem to encounter such stories of netorare. Not from the usual shoujo, right?

I agree on that, he should have thought of her when writing it. Thinking about it more, maybe you are indeed right that it is for/about her because if it was only for her to sing..iirc, he wouldn't have tried to pass the same song to his own band and then to Mari though that the latter one was due to the producer's machinations.

True..one cannot generalize on that as there are this and that kind of managers/producers.

Haha..is that what you're implying? Forgive my cluelessness on that. =P Alas, the gate turns out to be closed.

Sorry for bringing this up again, but thinking over it, I don't seem quite convinced that Aki quit his band because of principles regarding the 'lipsync' of his playing. That is due to, he seems to had abandoned working hard on playing the bass really well and just concentrated on composing. Though, I won't blame him for it since composing is his forte and I won't be surprised if that was the intention of the producer to do that and well, Aki isn't really suited to be in a public eye.

Whereas, even if his band mates accepted that kind of arrangement, they still practice really hard with hopes that they can play LIVE. I think the guitarist is nearing that point since Aki wanted him to play at their concert. The lead singer isn't, in regards to his playing based on how the producer chastise him over it. Maybe, they were thinking of that..for now, let's do the 'lipsync' of our playing then we practice really hard so that one day, we'll play it on our own. What do you think?

      Delete
    27. Of course, lol, forgive me if I sound like I'm placing standards on the industry and its artist, I did not mean to imply that eveyone follows my pilosophy and marches to the tune of their heart. I know this is not so, not so for a great deal many, not so, for even I... I talk but of a dream.

It Is, and thank you kat ^^

Ah, well, that would be because I'm not bound to the world of shojo... ;P

      I think so ;3

Lol, I'm not sure what you got out of that, haha, I was just letting my quirks charge forth. ^.^ But if you thought I was flirting with you, you would not be mistaken... to an extent. ;P

And forgive my short replies, I feel we've almost worn this topic threadbear, lol. After he gave up his place in the band, I don't see why he would continue to practice. Its not as if he can go to a new label, meet a better manager, and give it his all; to break out into showbusiness the proper way. His soul is tied to his band, even though he is no longer a member, he is bound by loyalty and friendship, sacraficing himself to compose the music they play. Moreover, contracts, and the producers thumb hold him in place; one way or the other, I truly believe he is a caged bird.

There is no doubt he could have chosen their route, to accept the back stage for now, while constantly striving to refine himself so that one day he can take the true role as his own. I guess that is another path to true stardome, I shouldn't discount the will power required to compete with true tallent and suffer through the tribulation of being denied and shackled by your manager, to push through and truly obtain what you desire. If that is the case, then they are more the artist than he. For if he caved in to insults, then could his desire, his passion truly have been that strong? But then again, I also believe he is broken, so we have to factor that into consideration as well.

      Delete
    28. Don't worry, I do know what you mean, Jeremy. Idealistically it would be nice to be such..but well, in reality...

Lol..well, I did think you were doing that..to that extent =P

Hm..good point. I was thinking that perhaps, he would just lend his position temporarily to Blondy but then, replacing a band member at its peak popularity doesn't seem advisable. True..and in a way, he is still part of the band..it's producer and composer. Hm..even as we agree that it would be better for Blondy to get out of the band, I wonder if he'll be replaced or not since Aki being a genius can just 'delete' the role of a bass player in a band. Hehe though I'm not quite sure if that can be done for a certain bass tune to be missing in their songs..unless replaced with a 'machine/pre-recorded whatever'.

      True..thanks for your thoughts ^^

    29. Indeed, I never do so wholeheartedly as such endeavors have never been well receipted. Indeed at times it seems fiction is the only place to find love.

It would not be the first time a major band has changed its players, many have only reached their true height of fame after breaking up, merging, or exchanging players.Notably, Queen was the birth of other smaller scale bands that had a rocky start.

Any time, As I have said before, I quite enjoy talking to you ^^

Was it? Browsing through, it is a bit of Kyouko doesn't want to become an idiot again being in love, doesn't want to turn ugly due to jealous = Ren never finding the one to love, and using her bad experiences for acting. Though it was briefly mentioned how things led up to Ren which is probably what she is saying here. Reading the narration of this arc, it seems that upon realizing that..she came to realize that it is 'destiny' and came not to hate Shou that much.

I think that ren will not tell kyoko about him being corn becaus he is a big fate lier so it would be better if he make up some fairytale for her , something like each royal family member in the fairy land has another human self on earth , and then somehow he'll tell her the truth about him bing koun and she'll think something like(omg ren is the human self of corn ) and then one of them should have the courage to confess.

You wrote at the end that you didn't think Kuon was smiling. ... When i look at the picture for a while, it doesn't seem like he's smiling, more like a smile of sincerity and peacefulness.

      Hehe, so it is still a smile? I actually do not exactly know how to describe it..seems to smile but is it a smile. Good thing I saw the baidu comment ^^; or else, I don't know why Kyouko is delighted. ^^;;

  40. Wow... I did not dare to hope for a kiss, but there it is... I'm astonished. I really hope that after this Kuon finally forgives himself and is able to move forward. Of course that would bring the Ren act to an end, but it would be interesting to see that kind of development. Thank you so much for the summary!

  42. Finally!!! New chapter and a "Holly" Kiss > ,< I´m fan girling all over! Thank you so much for the summaries, I really enjoy reading all of your summaries. So now we will wait for another whole month for next chapter hmm... Well my fan girl happines will last at least 20 days so it won´t be that difficult to wait. xD

I did like the chapter a lot, the slight touch of their lips is perfect since theres is no "Corn x Kyoko kiss" its better that way, Kyoko still needs to know that Ren and Kuon/Corn are the same person. It will be too shocking for her to share a really deep and lovely kiss to a man and notice he has been lying in her face (I love ren but he is a liar I totally agree) and Kyoko still has a white lie with Ren from her being the chicken (I thing Bou?) that hears his personal problems. There is still so much to clear for them but the best part was from Ren finally smiling from the heart. I miss Shou O.o How will he react? He would be breaking things and screaming like a freak ( If he saw "Kuon" he would notice right away he is Ren) There will be a lot of drama (and I hope a really good fight of bishonen ripping their clothes in the process) *o*

Indeed. Maybe he'll confess and get more than just that kind of kiss..he is unsatisfied by it after all =P Yup..not only that, he is smiling while being Kuon/Corn.

Ah..how Shou will react..I eagerly anticipate it ^^ Fight? Lol, it might be one-sided favoring Ren =P

  43. thanks for the summary. I can never stand waiting for the next chapter because Skip Beat is sooooo good. I remember a couple years ago the chapter would be translated after one day but now the chapter don't get translated until 2-3 weeks later and it kills me.

  45. Thanks for the wonderful summary!!! Aww, this chapter exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. Such a beautiful chapter, to see Corn/Ren looking so peaceful at the end... it makes me so happy that he is finally willing to let himself be happy. I think the peck kiss was just right since it gives some satisfaction while still saving a nicer kiss scene for when they are doing it out of love (and properly know who they are kissing!!). The narrations about their past bringing them to where they are now are just lovely. I also enjoyed Kyoko talking about Ren in such a high esteem that she is willing to be grateful for the issue with Sho in order to meet Ren (unless I misunderstood). It would be great if Corn/Ren later thinks about all she has said to him and gain hope that she might have some love feelings... but I'm so satisfied with this chapter that I can be happy waiting for another arc for more development in the love department! I have been walking on a cloud every since I read your summary. So thank you again!!!

Indeed ^^ That is right, she is being grateful to Shou that enabled her to meet Ren.

True..what she said can be implied as love or well, 'worshiping adoration type'. ^^; I wonder if Ren is sharp enough to notice the love part ^^

Indeed..this arc seems to be more on Kuon accepting himself and everything that has happened. Hopefully, it is more on the love part next ^^

  46. Thanks Kat its only because of your translations that my moribund schedule finds some solace and bliss.

Ummmmmmmmm..... Nakamura sensei is a genius and undoubtedly she has a very wonderful view towards life. Well the subtle way in which she has executed this story its ought to become an international rage. SB is a brilliant manga and the BEST one I have ever read.

  47. I've been reading this since 2007, and been buying the volumes up to date. However. I really feel it's agonizingly slow , and that's an understatement. About Kyoko and her fairy tale belief..... I'm now questioning her state of mental health. It's getting ridiculous. If I were Ren, I'd have second thoughts and question it, as well. I'd understand if she believes in ghosts and some supernatural stuff, but the fairy tale stuff, like Corn having wings, etc, ....... it's jaw -dropping. I mean, she really is serious. Anyway, don't get me wrong... I love SB, except the times when she talks about fairies.

    1. True..it has been quite slow. I think it has always been slow-paced. It wasn't that tormenting before because it used to come out twice a month. I noticed it when Kyouko is working in Dark Moon..how she is developing her role..so slow. It has always been advised to read this series by volumes rather than by chapter = drives you less crazy.

You think so? Well, I don't think Ren will question about her mental health because he uses it for his advantage and accepts her being like that. That has always been something she always believed in. In a way, her active imagination is actually a great help for her acting, don't you think so? Also, if it were Shou, yes, he would question her mental health and even berate her for being stupid, etc. I actually don't really question those fairies stuff in this series..I mean, this is a series that has little Kyouko demons, can attack people and Reino can actually blackmail her with it. That pretty much tells me not to take the series too seriously ^-^

Actually I find the fairies stuff amusing. How she and Ren as Corn interacted well talking about fairy stuff as if it is something real and getting what each other meant. That is how they met. That is how they met at the Dark Moon shooting at I forgot the place resort type where Shou was. At this point of the story, I think it also served its purpose because all of the fairy stuff earlier led to this development. ^^

  56. Thank you for posting Kat.

I'm really glad to see that I was not the only one who was happy with this chapter. I have been reading Skip Beat since 2007 and have been a fan ever since. What I notice in a lot of the comments people wrote on other websites is that they are unsatisfied with the pace of the story. But I feel that the pace is great and that chapter 210 made a lot of progress.

Personally I'm glad to see that Kuon has finally come to peace with his past and all because of Kyoko. I literally got teary eyed from that. I'm so happy and proud of Kyoko and Kuon.

    Now I'm waiting for Ren's confession :)

Anyway, sorry for babbling and thanks again for the summary.

True..and well, I think the pace has always been like this. Maybe it is more frustrating since it is now once a month instead of twice a month.

Indeed ^^ Hopefully, it will go to towards that direction and not regress backwards for their relationship.

      It's okay ^^

  57. Thanks for posting! But may I ask a silly questions? Haha! As I have missed so many chapters of this comic for yearssss, and I only started to continue reading this few days. So, I'm not very sure that is this chapter the ending of this comic? or is this comic already ended but not this chapter? As I have read some comments from other websites about people discussing the ending of this comic. Thanks!
