Skip Beat! [Chapter 205]

A couple of women are staring at blond Ren. They want to strike a conversation with him but they aren’t quite prepared to do it since top quality goods are too beautiful. They decided to go ahead or else, some other women would beat them to it. They call out to Ren and ask if he is alone. While gawking at dazzling Ren, they tell him that they are waiting for friends and are getting ready to go drink some tea while hanging out so if it is okay, he can come along with them. Ren answers them in Russian that he’s sorry, he doesn’t understand English. Then, he apologizes while leaving. The women didn’t know the language and it shouldn’t be French. While people are looking at him, Ren thinks what’s up with those women inviting him for tea when he is just waiting for the traffic signal, and they are obviously not waiting for someone. Even if it is near Japan, this is still overseas. He was thinking that if he uses his overseas appearance, he shouldn’t have an encounter so he went for a stroll. Then, he is thinking that in the end, he should just buy some gadgets and drinks after changing to Cain. There is a note saying that there’s no more wine and cigarettes for Cain to use. Ren thinks that like this, he won’t be hit on by men and women, young and old, but then, he is worried that if it is Cain, the police might be called out. [<- I think Ren plans to go shopping for some props for Cain but always kept on being hit on with that appearance so he would have to dress up as Cain to do it later on.] Then, he notices a sign for Tumon Beach. He thinks that he cannot go there as Cain. Arriving at the beach, Ren reminiscence the sea color for it is the same color as the sea where he always plays when he was young. He thinks that it is a bit the same with the sea in Okinawa. Walking towards the sea, he thinks that there’s no one nearby and this is quite suitable for him since he wants to quietly enjoy the ocean. He looks down and thinks that it is dangerous to swim because of the reef. Then, he sees a fish. He hides his cellphone at one of the cracks in a nearby rock. He weighs two rocks then drops the one he doesn’t need. He walks into the water with the rock he has chosen. Then, using the rock as a weight, he sinks in the water and watches the fishes. A fish stares at him and bites his nose. This made Ren smile. Then, he closes his eyes and sits as the fishes swim by.
Back in Japan, Lory stares at the globe, particularly Guam, and sighs. He thinks that he had totally forgotten that Kyouko did something way beyond his expectation, she had unexpectedly proposed to go one day ahead, and went there with Jelly. He is worried that Kyouko totally doesn’t know how to speak English. He assumes that she cannot depend on herself regarding the reservation at tonight’s hotel and that the airplane reservation cannot be changed. He thinks no, in the end, if it is Kyouko, since she has already decided, even if her English is bad, she would think of a way to reach her goal. For this overseas film shooting, Kyouko has informed her mother, whom she isn’t good with dealing with, her whereabouts. Flashback: Kyouko told Lory that she mailed to the place where her mother works. She told her mother that she is going to apply for a passport and needs her signature. Although for the Heel Sibling’s work, she already sent the envelope but actually she has fundamentally given up for there is a high chance that she’ll be ignored. End flashback. Lory couldn’t believe that Kyouko would take the initiative to make contact with her mother just to get her signature when she obviously had those pained expressions regarding that issue before. Since she is a minor, she has to have a guardian’s signature for the passport application. Lory didn’t think that Kyouko would not ask him nor the working staff. Lory thinks that it is good that she’s quite honest to the point of being foolish. And, what she said at that time, bothers [/always in his mind] him and then, right now, this side [in Guam] is what bothers him. He already precaution Jelly not to make Ren’s name appear in the hotel so nothing ought to happen. [<- probably about Ren not in the hotel alibi] Lory wasn’t able to predict that Kyouko would do this kind of thing that he felt that he cannot be at ease at all. Since there is no way that can be in constant communication, he hopes that Jelly[/Ren] to deal with whatever happens unexpectedly. Whether lucky or not, Kyouko doesn’t know Ren’s real name nor real appearance so even if they bump into each other at the hotel, there will be no big problem if Ren acts as if he totally doesn’t know her. Back at Guam, after re-surfacing for some unknown number of times, Ren finally gets out of the water. He pushes his hair back and is surprised to see Kyouko staring at him from the beach. He mentally wonders why she is here for shouldn’t she be arriving tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Kyouko wonders if she is having a dream or is this an illusion? Probably, it is..no it isn’t, for if there is truly breathing mermaid in the miraculous sea, then no matter what, it is possible, that’s right, in this beautiful sparkling sea, as if born from the light, a fairy emerges, and this isn’t impossible. Even if he is far away, that dazzling golden hair as if embedded with diamonds. Like a cicada’s wing, that glossiness, that suppleness. Recalling Corn, Kyouko thinks that if he grew up, undoubtedly, it is this kind of feeling. Kyouko is teary-eyed for he had grown up without a problem. She exclaims, “Co-” This startled Ren a bit but he maintains his poker face. Then, he quietly walks away. Kyouko goes to him and calls him Corn, it is her--.. But, Ren just gives her a look as if she is just a lowly human, don’t easily talk with him. This made Kyouko depressed that she sulks by the beach. Ren glances back and also becomes depressed upon seeing her like that. =P Kyouko thinks actually, that is right, for it is normal for him not to recognize her because unlike Corn, who maintained that kind of feeling when he’s grown up, that he can easily be recognized, that special characteristic – those beautiful green eyes wherein if the light shone on them for a second, they would become reddish brown. Those mysterious filled eyes are still quite the same. Whereas, she is poles apart whether outside or inside. She had cut her hair and dyed it brown. Regarding changing, she always thought that at worst, it is enough to just attain up to 70 percent [<- not too sure on this; maybe like she should maintain something from her old looks] and what’s more important is she is vented her anger on someone. There is a scene of Mio-Kyouko throwing her hate balls at Shou. She thinks that the current her is the her who has took the initiative to abandon the her when she was young..all of it. [Not sure why there is an imagine of Ren there ^^;] Then, she looks up to see Corn sitting in front of her and staring at her. She wonders when he.. She looks uneasy while he kept on looking at her. Then, Corn takes a stick and writes on the sand, “Could it be that you’re Kyouko-chan?” Kyouko looks up at him. She smiles and says, “..—Corn..” The next chapter will be out in Japan on November 20th.
Comment: Okay, typical of Ren, he cannot resist doing something upon seeing Kyouko sad/depressed. Apparently, snubbing her is not a good tactic for him since he cannot endure it. ^^; Apparently, he is indeed going to pretend that he’s Corn and what would this encounter bring for both of them. How much and how long can Ren pull it off as a fairy? I think he is playing it a bit safe by not talking. There is also his cellphone he left there..what if it suddenly rings. =P I think even if both wanted to do away with their past, like everything, they still retain something. Ren does seem to be still a kid inside and likes to play with nature. That explains why he came out of the water in full clothes. She likes to walk in nature and imagines all sorts of mythical creatures. Even if she’s already at that age, the power of her imagination is amazing that she immediately thought of him as Corn and not as Ren at all, or even thinking of the possibility that it is him. At least, similar to Kuu/Ren's father? Is that good or is that bad? Would this be Corn vs Ren later on? Of course, Corn isn’t exactly a first love for Kyouko but more like a friend. Hehe, if she only knew the truth that both of them did try to change ‘everything’ including appearance, she won’t feel so depressed over her makeover. ^^ It seems that no matter what disguise, Ren really attracts attention. ^-^ And, the surprising thing is Kyouko actually contacted her mother. Is this just to be with Ren as Setsuka, she finally did that because she needs the signature? It is amusing how they are unconsciously helping each other move on and do the things that they had avoided because of past incidents. I wonder if Kyouko’s mother would make an appearance soon, and how much does she know what Kyouko is currently doing. Again, Lory probably didn’t expect that Kyouko had already met Kuon-Ren before. Ah, what would be his reaction if he knew? ^^ I guess Kyouko is really putting Lory up his toes for she is way too unpredictable for him now. Scans by 红莲汉

  5. Wow, this is the first time my predictions about SB are right. I had a feeling it would be like this, and somehow I'm not disappointed. I'm really looking forward to next month's heartwarming reunion. I think it's going to be adorable. Or that's what I hope. Thank you so much for the summary!

    2. After reading a couple of the other comments I thought of a few other things to say:
      (1) I hope she doesn't talk about her love life, because I'm sure Ren might misunderstand. There's been enough of that so far.
      (2) I hope that after this meeting with Corn, she sees Ren again and thinks about how similar they are. I'd love that.
      (3) After this episode, I'm starting to think that the words she said last episode about "not hating that person as much" might actually be aimed at her mum, no? I would like it if she found out that her mother actually loves her after all. Just like most of the antagonists in this series, who are redeemed later in the story (Moko, Chiori and to a certain extent Sho), I think we have yet to see her mother's positive side.
      (4) I think I failed to mention I have been following your blog for years (I've been reading Skip Beat at least since 2005) but I always found it hard to comment. Your new blog makes it easier.

    3. Ah, 'enough of that' referring to misunderstanding? Ya, hopefully enough of that. But then, I'm hoping she mentioned it in some way because I'm thinking of progress and definitely not something that would make Ren misunderstand. Perhaps, something like liking Ren. Then, it would be like an 'indirect confession' =P

      Well, she'll see Ren..or rather, Cain ^^

Possible since it might be Kyouko's misunderstanding as to why her mother left her..is it really just because she's a 'failure' to her that she just left her to some other family's care? Did Shou's family took her in just because she's a good 'heiress' to the inn and 'wife' for Shou, or something else? Well, that would be in the far future..if it will ever be tackled.

      Is that so..thanks ^-^

  7. Is she bad at English? As Setsuka she talks to Cain in English when they are together and when she was with his dad playing young Koun so I'm confused why the President thinks that. But I do like how every since he was blown over by her revelation of her feelings he has no confidence in predicting her actions anymore! This story arc has me enthralled, I cant wait to see how they are with each other! I wonder if Ren will get jealous over himself!?!
Also I've think that the appearance of Kyouko's mom is only a matter of time now! I'm not sure how it'll be played out but I hope it helps her learn to love herself more.

  13. She doesn't recognize him?!?! Impossible....she has to put 2 and 2 together....she was able to recognize Ren disguised as Cain, it's impossible that green eyes and blond hair are deceiving her! It's only a matter of time, maybe when she'll have some time alone she will realize that the beautiful fairy was Ren

  16. I do wonder why Kyoko was able to recognize Ren so fast by memorizing his bone structure or is it due to her not being ready and her subconscious took over to prevent any emotional damage?

    1. Are you talking about when he was Cain? I think right now, she didn't immediately thought of it like Cain, because Cain is a 'stranger' to her whereas Corn is a 'special existence' that she didn't immediately think of the possibility that he is Ren. Currently, she seems to be just overjoyed that she met him/Corn again. Hm..is that what you're saying about 'prevent emotional damage'? She didn't immediately put thought of Ren as Corn to protect herself?

If you mean why she can memorize his bone structure..it was because she was making Ren dolls.

  17. I'd hoped this chapter would pick up right where we left off instead of a recap about Ren and Lory's soliloquy, but well. I guess I'm half exasperated and half amused. The former because I really wanted Kyouko to realize Kuon/Corn and Ren are the same. I mean, if she could identify Cain, then why... which brings me to the amusing part. I was afraid Kyouko's fairy tale mania would cloud her eyes to the reality and that's how it turned out. It's funny all the same. ^^ Though I agree with a comment above that it's only a matter of time before Kyouko puts 2 and 2 together. She's not stupid.

It would be better if Ren himself reveals it to her. He's trying hard to reconcile with his Kuon identity and Kyouko has definitely sped up that process so it makes me hopeful that in the not too distant future, Ren will admit everything to her voluntarily. Although a Dengeki Daisy like situation where she finds out for herself but decides to keep mum might be interesting... I just don't want unnecessary drama. -_- The manga has dragged out this romance long enough! We need something concrete soon...

I really don't expect (or want) much development on Kyouko's relationship with her mother at the moment. There's so much going on already. But wasn't Kyouko living with Shou's family because her mother had disappeared? Lemme check...

Thanks for the summary Kat! ^_^

    1. I know what you mean but it seems that it is a mangaka's technique to go to a 'cliffhanger'/juicy parts then go back to a recap for more details on how come Ren ended there, etc. I agree, her fairy tale mania took over and this is her reunion with her beloved Corn so she didn't immediately think of it. Maybe, if she calms down a bit and stuff.

Yup..though I cannot quite imagine Ren suddenly blurting it out. Maybe something would trigger it like..his cellphone ringing or something. =P I think it is only a matter of time..of course, for us, that might be months. ^^;; Ya, hopefully more progress..haha, even if the mangaka is only giving us a teeny-bit of progress per chapter.

Maybe later on..but it shows that she did got in touch with her. Ya, iirc, Kyouko's mother got fed up with her and left her with Shou's family. She did disappear but I guess she still works at the same place where she worked before and that is how Kyouko knew where to find her.

      Thanks for reading ^-^

  18. Thanks so much for the summary, Kat.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks that Kyouko not equating Kuon to Ren abit far-fetched.

Like the commentor above mentioned, Kyouko had previously been able to identify Ren because she had memorised his bone-body structure down to a T to make Ren-dolls. (hahaha)

And it seems that the difference between Ren and Kuon were their eye and hair colours. The remaining features are the same. Its not like he had a prostatic nose or chin when he was in Ren mode so i don't buy the fact that Kyouko doesnt recognise him as Ren.

I hope the mangaka would give us/explain to us the reason why Kuon-mode is different from Ren-mode or the reason Kyouko doesnt recognise him as 'blonde-Ren'. Even a fictional universe needs logical explanation. Lol.

I agree with you that Ren dug himself a hole to fall in when he snubbed Kyouko. Hahahah. That guy is a love victim of his own scheme and others.

I hope we can get a clingy romantic scene of the Heel siblings reunion. I want to see Ren use Cain's sis-con persona for more touchy-feely scenes that will help his non-existing-but-hopefully-future lovelife with Kyouko bloom. Hee.....

    1. Thanks for reading ^-^

Yup, and I think it is because her brain is currently in fairyland and this reunion with Corn that she didn't immediately think of that possibility Ren-Corn. Maybe later on, when she calmed down? Or, maybe, the more she interacted with Corn, she'll figure it out. =P There is also his cellphone which he hidden nearby..

True..hehe, maybe, it depends on what happens here. Hopefully, there would be a major progress at this 'reunion'.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think she had to learn it growing up since she did help out at the Ryokan (like a hotel, right?) dealing with all sorts of guests; domestic and foreign. =)

    2. You're welcome ^-^

Like ~m mentioned, she learned it from Shou's inn where she worked while dealing with foreign visitors. ^^

      Delete
    3. Which is why Cain commented on Setsu's english "Where did you learn to speak so politely?" haha
Although she would've learnt English in school as well, it's primarily her Ryokan experience that led to her English proficiency, and hence although she can speak it comfortably it is a bit strange/unnatural as it's more formal than typical English. Lory doesn't know of her past employment, hence he doesn't expect she'd be very good at English.
      - J

      Delete
    4. Yup ^^

Hm..maybe not know of working at the inn because I assume that Kyouko ought to have written something on the application form regarding her 'past working experience' during the audition. And, she would probably written her random jobs while 'working for Shou'. =P

      Delete
    5. As in she would've deliberately left the Ryokan off her resume? Makes sense, considering it was informal work and she possibly was in a "discard all my past history with Shotaro!" mood at that point. Lory's comment that he 'heard from Sawara that Kyoko didn't have a reason for entering show-biz' also made me think he hadn't read Kyoko's application form for the audition. Maybe once she was in LME, she just filled in her details (and chose her stage name, etc) but she didn't need to list work experience as non-acting stuff would be irrelevant by that point.

      Delete
    6. Ya..though I'm thinking that the 'past working experience' blank lines aren't enough for her to write all of them =P

I see..well, true, non-acting stuff is irrelevant to it.

      Delete
    7. Lory did read Kyoko's application. In fact after she had failed the LME audition, he was brooding over his decision with her application in his hand. That was probably the time he came up with the idea of the Love Me section. Also according to the revised scans it seems like Lory said to Kyoko that she "didn't even have a reason for wanting to do something in showbiz", Kyoko was always quite clear she wanted to enter showbiz to catch up with Sho, only Sawara questioned her where she wanted to be in and she displayed complete indifference to all the sections, which was why she was thrown out by Ren when he met them lol.

      Delete
    8. Here this is the link where Sawara was questioning her: http://mangafox.me/manga/skip_beat/v01/c002/14.html

    9. Is that so..so he did read it. Thanks for the reminder ^^

So, either Kyouko didn't mention that she worked at an inn before or Lory didn't think that helped her know how to speak in English.

  20. Thank you so much! I've been reading your blog for years, and I love your summaries.

I can't imagine how Kyouko wouldn't realize that this is Ren. He's dripping wet and she can see the outline of his body very clearly. When she met "Cain" for the first time she analyzed him as having Ren's exact height, bone structure, muscles, everything... Is glittering blonde hair and green eyes enough to convince Kyouko that she's looking at another person? Ah, I see others have noticed this too. I'm sure Kyouko will notice this herself, once she overcomes being dazzled by Corn.

Kyouko learned English a bit from working at Shoutaro's parents' inn. And being an overachiever and her mother demanding perfection, she also studied very diligently in school. So her English was okay. I believe she worked on it more once she became an actress, or lately, for her role as Setsuka. Her English was pretty good when she pretended to be Kuu's son until he told her his son knew how to speak Japanese, just his knowledge of kanji was weak.

  21. Thanks for the summary Kat! ^^. I love that the mangaka finally used russian words for Ren. lol. those words are the only words that I could understand from the raws since russian is my third language in school.| Just wondering how Ren will pull out with that "Corn" play. It has to end, right? Will he pick a rock again and sink to the sea?:D It's surprising that Kyoko has contacted her mother. Was her name Saena? I can feel that we will see her soon. What I want to happen is that Saena would become Kyoko's manager. Lory once said that Kyoko should have one. I can imagine how pitiful and heartbroken Lory would be if he knew the rest of the story about Ren and Kyoko.. Hopefully it will happen sometime soon in the future..

      Hehe..is that so. ^^

That's right, I wonder how he will pull it off. He cannot always keep on writing on the sand..but if Kyouko really pay attention especially his 'body structure', I think she should be able to guess it soon. ^^

I think that's her name. Ya..but soon might be many months from now. ^^; Is that so.. I'm not too sure if it will reach that point because I have a feeling that Ren might be leaving for US soon and will bring Kyouko with him..so, the manager for Kyouko might not happen.

      Yup ^^

      Delete
    2. Ooh, the US idea is interesting (and would be fun/heaps of story potential there).
Has there been any mention of Ren going to the US soon? I was getting the idea that Rory might like to send Kyoko there sooner or later (to make her an 'international star') but I can't remember anything relating to Ren and the US, other than him eventually needing to accept himself and return to his parents. Did he say that was only going to be after he reached a certain credibility in Japan, or does he need to go act in the US as Ren in order to completely demonstrate his ability as an actor?
      - J

      Delete
    3. Not really though I feel it is somewhat hinted since he has already made a name for himself in Japan. He is already dealing with his 'dark Kuon' past = accepting himself and if Tragic Marker was a hit, I think he can already 'graduate' and go back to the US = for a bigger stage/audience..like an international star. ^^

Then, Lory hinted on Kyouko also going abroad soon. There are no other current major projects in Japan for the two. And now, the mangaka is concentrating on the Corn/Kuon is Ren thing so.. I'm assuming that is where it is leading. ^^

      Delete
    4. Ah okay, good point about the lack of other Japanese projects... it's convenient that Box-R and Tragic Marker are both wrapping up, so that plus Lory's comments lends a lot of weight to the idea of the US being next ^^ Lory seems to always be next to a globe these days haha.

Yeah I think you're right about him being ready to 'graduate'. Given that Ren was already considered the #1 male actor (I believe?) in Japan at the start of the series, and he has since displayed his depth of role capability and 'defeated' his father's Katsuki performance, I don't know what more he could do in Japan to prove his merit.

I expect it will be easy for Lory to convince Ren and Kyoko to go to the US together. They're used to living together (awww), have demonstrated that they provide good support to one another and Ren's always adopted a mentor role to Kyoko in acting so it's natural that her 'mentor' would be with her when she tries to start acting in the US, especially as he knows the country already. I'm looking forward to it, I hope it happens soon! XD

      Delete
    5. Yup, and maybe tie up or 'conclusion/revelation' for what exactly happened to Ren in the US. ^^

Yup, and he was able to fool almost everyone for his BJ role.

Ya..and there's also Kuu..I think it will be a dream come true for Kyouko since he is pretty much like a 'father' to her ^^ That's another 'mentor' aside from Ren. Then, she'll get to met 'Corn's mother'.

      Hehe..ya ^^

      Delete
    6. If Kyoko goes to the USA she will deffinitelly visit Kuu. He said that she can "come to play anytime" right? What would be unexpected if Kyoko would meet Julie before seeing Kuu. Then Julie gets a good impression of Kyoko ^^ thought we still don't know what kind of person Julie is. And then without parents being against we'll see Kyouko and Ren married.. if that will happen... :D sorry. I just love to imagine how the stories will end. it's a habit.

    7. Yup, and I'm somehow thinking that since iirc, she's a model, maybe she can also give some more tips to Kyouko on being really glamorous and everything ^^ And, maybe Kyouko can give her tips on how to cook =P

*Ren/Kyouko possibly going to the US:
Additionally, don't forget that just before the Dark Moon completion party, there was a hint about a possible "overseas trip." Sawara mentioned to Lory that Ren had said offered to take the DM cast on a trip together (or something along that line). Lory was hoping he could turn it into a trip to Egypt.

      *Kyoko's manager:
I don't know if this is even possible, but I think it would be so funny and cute if Lory makes Yoshiro do it (do managers handle multiple actors??) seeing as he already knows how to deal with Kyouko's mood swings and she and Ren are together so much anyway...

*Has Ren already achieved his aims in Japan?:
I agree, it seems to me that Ren has achieved pretty much every goal he set for himself. The last is of course reconciling himself with Kuon, and with Kyouko in the picture, they are finally finding common ground.

      *Kyouko meeting Julie:
I think there is huge potential that if Ren still hasn't revealed himself as Corn when they go to the US that Kyouko will begin to put everything together on her own when she meets Julie. Based on the way Kuu described her, I wonder whether Kyouko's first thoughts will be that Julie is also a fairy, lol. And if she has the same hair and eyes as Corn (which seems possible to me)...well...

*Kyouko and Julie exchanging cooking/modeling tips:
Ahahahahaha!!!! That would be just hilarious!!!

    9. Is that so..

I think it is possible for a manager to handle multiple actors unless Yoshiro already has his hands full with Ren.

      Indeed.

Ya..and I wonder when we will ever get to that point.

      Yup ^^

  25. Thanks again, Kat, for the speedy summary. I wait for the day every month.
I have a theory on why Kyoko did not immediately "body ID" Ren. First, she had her head full of fairies and mermaids, and so her mind naturally had Corn in the background, so when a perfect match for eye/hair appeared, that was the direction her thoughts went. Also, if I remember, she was staring at Cain for a while trying to work up the courage to talk to him before she tripped to the bone structure, and even then she wasn't sure. I'd give her fairy-struck brain a better chance of subconsciously realizing Ren-Corn matchup with a bit more interaction... but she's really good at ignoring reality when fairies are available. No doubt sensei will come up with a suitably comical way to play it out. Can't wait till next month- how much BS will Ren have to wield to keep his cover intact, and will it work?

  27. Indeed, thank you very much for your summaries and very fitting quotes at the end.

More than the fairy fetish, I think the reason Kyoko does not immediately see the resemblance because 1) she is a woman in love and love impacts perspective and discernment; and 2) Ren is also a very good actor so the 'aura' he emits is probably very drastic (just as Kyoko has also exhibited). These two characters live their lives as someone daily, and parts of their true nature becomes alive with every role they take on.

Lastly, I believe that Kyoko will soon realize that, in the end, Shotaro is more like a brother and Kuon (Corn/Ren) is her destined love. After all, boy Kuon was like her knight in shining armor all those years ago - well, shining fairy.

    Thanks, again! =)
    Be blessed.

How so in number 1? Like it is impossible for him to be Ren? In number 2, it's possible ^^

Hm..maybe, but I would rather believe she did loved him that is why she is so vengeful and everything about it. Ah, aside from being tricked/made a fool, etc. Based on the flashbacks, Corn is more like a friend who is there to cheer her up when she's down. Of course, later on, he indeed became 'her knight.shining fairy' in the persona of Ren ^^

You're welcome and same to you ^^

    1. Ya..I was wondering of that possibility.

Corn might 'ask' her regarding Shou and she might say something like, she is in love with someone else right now. Or something like that. If she did, I wonder how kind of expression Ren as Corn would have..that might expose him =P

      Delete
    2. Haha I was thinking the same thing... although he hates making her think of Shou, so perhaps he'd just be asking her something like "are you happy?" that might lead to it, or a teasing question about whether she has anyone special at the moment.

If he does ask and she replies (or just blushes obviously), Ren's likely to get needlessly jealous, which may lead to conflict/sullenness later. I think he'd be able to clamp down on reacting poorly while he's Corn, but I'm sure he'd get annoyed later on when remembering it. That might happen when they're back to being the Heel siblings, as Cain feels quite possessive over Setsu (and has basically been promised by her that he's the only guy she's interested in) so if anything happens that brings the topic up again he might react and confront her over it. As Ren, he seems more likely to act standoffish/a bit cold as a result of knowing she likes someone... which would be disappointing to her.

    3. Yup ^^

That's possible though things might get 'draggy' that way. Though usually, 'good things' happen when these two are alone ^^ The expression of Ren, I particularly meant, that would expose him is if ever Kyouko reveals to him that she likes Ren ^^

If nothing much happen during this encounter, maybe with Kyouko's luck, she stumbles on him while Jelly is dyeing his hair back =P

      Delete
    4. Yeah it might drag on the story, in which case Nakamura would avoid it, but she's been really good at not letting conflict slow things down (unlike in other mangas, where issues can stick around for ages without any progress). As I'm guessing you meant by 'good things', whenever there is conflict/issues between Ren and Kyoko it seems to bring them closer together if anything. The main reason why I thought there might be jealousy due to a misunderstanding as opposed to Ren realising she likes him is that firstly, it seems too soon (the first real act of the play has only just begun) and secondly, things have been going so well for their development lately that I feel like a spanner in the works needs to arise lol so that it isn't just smooth sailing. But there are many other sources of conflict that Nakamura can introduce instead ^^

I suspect Jelly and Ren are going to be ridiculously paranoid about Kyoko unexpectedly popping up after this hahaha. They'd want to put double locks on all the doors!

      Delete
    5. Ya..especially given her pacing for the manga. True..

      Not really..more like 'lovey-dovey things' when they are alone and how their relationship in a way progress even if they aren't 'going steady' or anything. For example, during the practice for Dark Moon, Ren's almost kiss, when 'jealous over Shou' during shooting, she let him sleep on her lap, Heel siblings' hickey, etc. Stuff like that =P Ah..just remembered, he's Corn here so I'm not too sure now. ^^;

I see..I get your point there. And, it is amusing since it would turn out he's jealous of himself in a way/his other persona ^^
      That's right ^_^

  29. I just realized I typed in the longer comment I have ever left anybody lately, and it did not post. Woe is my iPod ;_; lol

Anyways, first off thank you for sharing this wonderful summary, I couldn't wait to read a full summary after figuring out what Kuon/Ren wrote on the sand. So he really did say "Could you possibly be Kyoko-chan?" or how you had translated it. I'm one of your avid readers, by the way... although I really didn't make a comment until now, sorry f(^^;)

I was reading some of the comments here and couldn't help agreeing with all of them. I would say the same thing, but might just repeat what everyone else has been saying and would point out one observation I had that has been bothering me since maybe even Chapter 204. Maybe someone did already mention this but just missed it, but why did Ren Tsuruga decide to "revert" or "disguise" himself as his own/real self? Interpret it however your like, but that part really bothers me the most. I mean, I understand the repercussions if Ren was to go as Cain Heel. By birth his character is considered a foreigner, a British-Japanese actor, wasn't it? But Cain's persona looks dangerous enough that might cause trouble and jeopardize the entire BJ Project. Also, from what I've read so far, Ren is still in the process of accepting his true self, Kuon and again maybe it's just me but he isn't at the stage where he's ready to show Kuon to the whole world just yet, much less to Kyoko herself. I dunno, I might be missing something here but that's just how I saw it.

And Kyoko not putting two and two together to see that Corn is Kuon is Ren, like how she did with Cain and Ren. I dunno exactly how to explain it, but I think the reason why Kyoko didn't see Kuon as Ren and more as Corn is just that... this is Corn we're talking about. Kyoko was already in love with Ren 100 or so chapters ago and just didn't realize that she was until Chapter 203, but it was somehow kinda implied that Corn is still a separate entity than Ren, who's she considered her most important person aside from Sho. Otherwise she wouldn't be keeping the stone and naming it after him right? And I think I might have read it somewhere in the middle of the series but she somehow says "Corn" is still more dazzling to her than Ren Tsuruga is *lol* It's also because Ren acts unCorn-like for reasons we already know. This is not to say Kyoko/her love for Ren is shallow, I love that girl to bits so I can't really bash her :D That, and her Ren Tsuruga Scale is not in effect due to her mind in fanstasy land. But Ren can definitely keep up being Corn, although for how long only the author knows when. (Okay, my first comment actually sounded a whole lot more sense than this one... if only it successfully posted *sobs*)

Well, thanks again for sharing the summary, and your ending commentary actually inspired me to share my own thoughts about the chapter so thanks for that as well. I'm so looking forward to seeing how the next chapters plays out. Sankyuu sankyuu! ^^v

    1. I expect Ren chose to go as his true self primarily because it was the easiest. No one besides Jelly, Lory and his parents would recognise him so it's completely safe. Going natural also means he doesn't need to bother with contact lenses/dyeing his hair etc – something that would be harder to maintain when he's in another country on his own, without Jelly's assistance. As for not being ready to accept/show himself, I think he's made huge leaps towards that, symbolised by the elevator scene where he and Kuon touched palms. I know he was reluctant to show his father his real appearance, but I think that's because it would be so much harder given the strong emotions involved with his parents, whereas being Kuon in front of strangers might be no concern to him. He definitely wasn't ready to show his true self to Kyoko, but that was completely unexpected for him – he had no expectation that she'd change her flight and then happen to bump into him.

It was so lovely to see Ren/Kuon enjoying himself with the fish. Appreciating nature is something he never discarded to become Ren, but I think he feels much more liberated to do whatever he wants (even going into the water fully dressed) as Kuon. It will be interesting to see whether his liberated attitude carries over to his dealings with Kyoko – he might use the situation to ask some personal questions he usually wouldn't perhaps... They would be easily disguised by Corn's concern for her and how she's been, but he'd potentially get some more honest answers out of her than he would as Ren. I don't think he'd abuse this opportunity, I'm thinking more that he would want to know whether she's genuinely happy etc.

    2. Thanks for reading ^-^ Ah..sorry, to hear that the first post didn't got in.

That is possible but actually, I didn't think deep into it. ^^; I just assumed that the picture in his passport is Kuon so he has to go there looking like that, rather than as Ren or BJ. =P I don't know though if Guam immigration is strict if the hair color and eye color are different from the passport but I assumed they are. ^^

That's right and for her, Corn is a fairy. She even though of his glare as 'don't easily talk to me lowly human' so it is already a different species. Hm..in a way, maybe it isn't exactly 'love' with Corn but admiration, perhaps? She wasn't talking things like marrying Corn or something love-related, right?

Yup, I wonder how can he keep the act up or something will happen like a slip up, cellphone-related, among other things, and hopefully, a bit progress..revelations/exposed-type of things are of course, most welcomed ^^

You're welcome and glad to hear that ^^

Ya, that's possible. As I've mentioned above, I'm only thinking that 'Kuon' is the picture he has on his passport. =P

Yup, that is quite nice and cute. He has retained that. Somehow, I think that for both Ren and Kyouko, even if they 'hated' their past so much and wanted to 'erase' it, there are still some good things that happened there which makes up their current 'fond memories'.

I think it is possible in some way especially since Kyouko used to always talk to him about Shou. What if she now tells him about Ren. =P Corn's reaction on that might expose him ^^ That's right..it is like how Ren told things to Kyouko when she's acting as Bou the chicken. They can be more honest and unrestrained if talking with each other's 'other persona' ^^

  31. Thanks for your excellent work. It's funny to see Ren/Kuon acts like a mermaid, emerging from the sea with stunning beauty and "cannot" speak. :)) But unlike the mermaid, he's just afraid that if he speaks, she will definitely recognize him as Ren. ^_^ Can't wait until those two finally get together. Hope that it will be solved in this volume, since the author already hinted about the day when Kyoko can tolerate Shou's existence.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tolerate Shou's existence? You're referring to Ch.204? That initial phrase at the start of the chapter?
I myself am of opinion that was Ren talking there about the darkness of Kuon. Of course it can apply to other characters as well, but it being Ren makes the most sense to me.

With the whole Dark Breath arc going on, Shou has been pretty much pushed to the background and rarely has any involvement at all. It just doesn't make much sense for Kyouko to suddenly bring that up in between the Heel siblings act, finding out about 'Kuon' personality inside Ren and of course accepting the fact that she is in love with Ren and her whole life have been stepping stones leading her to that destiny..

In that regard, it being Ren saying it would just be far more fitting and foreboding to the new and coming chapters about Kyouko possibly finding out about Ren's secret being 'Corn' and maybe even 'Huzari Kuon', as in the son of Kuu.

Also.. since the whole Vie Ghoul stuff I've been already of opinion that Kyouko's hate towards has subsided some. I think she already does tolerate his existence. Though that doesn't mean has forgiven or likes him, her newfound love for acting and well Ren have simply become more important that her grudge for Shou.

    2. Thanks for reading ^-^

Good point..it is like a mermaid who 'cannot talk'. ^^

      Yup.

      Delete
    3. Is that so, [anonymous 2]

That is possible..though I did thought that it was Kyouko's narration referring to Shou..since that whole chapter is focused on Kyouko. Tolerate his existence like she won't be all fired up when she sees him = she has moved on which leads to now = possibly knowing who Corn really is, and probably knowing more about Ren. Connecting it to the previous chapter of falling in love again - discussion with Lory - which is a bit Shou' related.

True..that after that, there was the 'kidnapping of Kyouko' and making her promise something like denying that she likes Ren or else, she'll serve as some waitress at his family's inn. I guess that is Shou's trump card so..

      Delete
    4. Yes, Kat, that was what I meant too. I think the narration hints the day when Ren and Kyoko's love story develops to the stage where she's confident with their relationship and find happiness in loving someone again. Only then can she totally get over Shou, or to say, her past, let go of her grudge, heal her heart and move on. That's the whole point of the story: we tripped, we're destructed then we gather ourselves to stand and grow up. And besides, to Ren, Shou is a nuisance but not to the extent of an obsession for him to pay that much thought. He has way more important stuff to think about, like how to not being caught between desire and reason. :D

    5. Yup..that seems to be where the story is going and I think this part should be 'crucial' ^-^

The chapter itself.. Im having a bit of a mixed feeling about it. It's totally not like I thought of Ren getting exposed, but this development has been interesting nonetheless. My curiosity is getting pushed in another direction, yet again.. damn cliffhangers ^^
Not too sure about her mom's involvement.. Im well aware fro her to completely 'spread her wings' and move on, released by the burden of the past, it's something that needs to happen, but for it to happen now already? Good thing Kyouko has taken the initiative in it, though it still feels a bit like a downer in the middle of the happy fantasies and growing romance.
Although her mother consenting to just a signature only, as there has been no mention of any actual interaction (she could've just signed the forms and mailed them back without a comment..), it's nice to see Kyouko isn't getting completely ignored. I wonder, if she had been ignored.. you think she'd approach Lory to act out as her guardian?

  35. Thank you Kat! I am actually excited for Kyouko's mom appearance in the story. I have been waiting forever for it and hope Ren is able to do something to help her through it. I wonder though, if Kyouko's in Guam, doesn't that mean her mother contacted her and signed the passport?? And we can take that as a hint of her mother trying to make up for the past? I am not a big fan of Ren keeping Kyouko in the dark about him being Koun. If she finds out on her own, it will be a "shou moment" and she wont trust him.

Maybe.. though I assumed that her mother just signed the form and sent it back. Perhaps..or acting like a parent after all this time.. but then, I could be wrong for we might have more flashbacks of her mother doing something more than signing the application.

I'm not too sure.. and it is a bit different from 'Shou moment' since that was more like 'used and discarded as tissue'. Also, Kyouko has her own secret like she is actually Bou the Chicken.

  36. I totally thought that she would see Ren as Ren, not Corn. After all she is much more familiar with Ren now to the point of remember his bone structure, while Corn is fairy prince in the distant past. And hair and eyes color can be explained away simply enough by contact and hair dye. I feel pity for Jelly, she'd probably have heart attack if she see those two together.

  41. Thank you for translating!
As a comment to your note, I'd consider that the reason Rens picture pops up during her self analysis about change has to do with how he is related to her current self. She became much more 'hateful and dark' and Corn is still pure light and perfection.
Her changes, include the 'ugly' feelings she had for a pretty long period of time and her first 'real' love. Thus it includes a picture of 'awesome' Ren.
Not sure if that makes sense.
Hopefully she will openly talk about romance and the people important to her, but I think in true Skip Beat style, we might be left unsatisfied for quite a while before seeing if any progress really takes place. It seems likely she will make many small connections between Ren and Corn, but refuse recognizing they're actually one person, maybe if the phone thing makes her realize he's 'real' she will.
I honestly hope her mom doesn't come into further play, although most people don't agree, I think maybe mom's just mentioned to show she's truly surpassing what she has suffered because of her mom. Her redemption might undermine how Kyouko, who has been so mistreated by the people who are supposed to love her the most, still turns out to be so inspirational and succesfull.
Also wouldn't be surprised if we only get a super brief look at Ren and Kyoko together before the final chapter. Nakamura sensei embodies the word 'tease' in manga imho =) still lover her work tho, and yours for posting this

Ya, it is most likely that. More on her current self with a picture of Ren..than the past self.

      Yup, hopefully, she will ^^

In a way, yes..I also think that way..her mother might not intervene much further..well, at least for now. I think of it like Kyouko's moving on and would do the unexpected like contract her mother, just to get that passport to be with Ren =P

      That's right ^^

    2. *On the subject of why the picture of Ren appeared when she was thinking of how much she's changed, my impression was that she was thinking of how nothing remains of who she once was: her hair, her standards of scholastic achievement, her personality, even the man she loves (Past: Shou ---> Present: Ren)

*On the subject of Kyouko's mom, I kind of agree that her mother is/should remain more of a prop to display Kyouko's own personal growth than become an actual part of the story now. I mean, aside from having a deeper explanation/clarification of Kyouko's past, I'm not sure how an arc about her mother would really add to Kyouko's own self-love or expand her acting abilities??? And it could really bog the story down.

Then again, even if she has already successfully come to terms with the pain of her mother's rejection, maybe if she were actually able to tie up those 'loose ends' she would be more fully able to move ahead confidently in life...especially if she's about to go overseas, as has been hinted at...?

      Delete
    3. Is that so.

Indeed..and it seems that she doesn't quite care for a reconciliation either.

Probably. Maybe her mother would reflect on things and do something when Kyouko comes back to Japan. Unless, she is really an uncaring mother.

Hm..actually, I think she is 'of age' since in other shoujos, at her age, they can get married. She's currently 17, right?

    2. Hmm, oh maybe... I don't know why I had it in my head that Ren would want to wait until she graduated high school before doing anything serious. Also, in Ch. 201 when Ren told Yashiro not to worry (because of Kyoko's expression) and that he didn't commit a crime, I assumed he was referring to not doing something with an under-aged girl... maybe I misunderstood? I do have a tendency to skim too quickly when I'm excited about the story! :)

    3. You are right. Ren did gave that kind of impression and he did say that. And, it seems that Kyouko is technically a 'minor' but then, girls can get married at 16 in Japan.

I guess they are more 'conservative/protective' of Kyouko?

  48. Hi!! about the70% I think she refers to the time when she met Corn, and she always wanted to have 100% on a test, and cried for having 80%, because her mother thought that was not enough...

  50. Thanks so much for the review, I had the chance to read this chapter in spanish and couldn´t understand a lot of things (Horrible translation maybe?) Also I love to read your point of view it gives more ideas. Ren is sooooo damn sexy there! (I´d like to be that fish) Kyoko in Lalalaland is not something that impressed me (I even thought it would happen somehow) but it was so clever from ren to write instead of speaking so she won´t figure out he is Ren. >_< Can´t wait for next chapter, the manga seems to get better month by month! That unendable valentines day was so slow paced...

Yup.. and hopefully, Ren makes a slip up, phone rings, or Kyouko starts noticing the similarity. Really hoping for a bigger development ^^

  51. Just have to say that Guam *is* actually part of the U.S., it's just not on the mainland :-) Devil's advocate and I used to live on the next island over. As an aside, if Corn busted out his U.S. passport, he wouldn't need any kind of work or travel visa.

But I have no idea where this is going. I had expected to catch up on Moko-san and Shou's new found stalker streak, and instead to fast forwarded to *Guam*. The heck? What kind of futuristic serial killer chase ends up in *Guam*? And have we just abandoned all the other characters? No flashbacks to the other Love Me members' crazy jobs?

OTOH, the manga-ka did I nice job on the underwater-scape and fish :-) And Corn the magical mer-fairy is awesome as always. As for recognition points, she seems to be focusing on his hair and eyes, so I don't think it's that surprising she doesn't instantly realize he's Ren. Well, and that whole "he's a magical fairy from fairyland" thing :-P

    1. Yup..that is why I think his 'Kuon image' is the one on his US passport so he has to change back. Aside from preventing himself from being mobbed or exposed as Ren. =P

Since I haven't been in that place..maybe a fight scene underwater? Ya..but given the mangaka's pacing, it might take a long time to get to this point if we are to tackle those other things. Somehow, I get a feeling that she is trying to hasten up to the 'important points' of the story = couple development especially since we are already at chapter 200+

Yup..that was nice ^^ Indeed, she is focusing only on the hair and the eyes..if she starts looking at him as a whole, maybe she'll have a light bulb moment and realize who he really is =P
