Skip Beat [Chapter 220]

As Saena steps out of the elevator, she looks at surprised Kyouko. She looks at the Love Me badge. She looks down on Kyouko’s outfit. She looks back up to Kyouko as Kyouko looks back at her. Kyouko notices her mother’s scowl [<- knit one’s brow]. Kyouko looks tense as Saena passes by her then walks away. Kyouko snaps out of it when a couple of girls call out to her and ask if she is going to ride the elevator. Kyouko says yes, sorry. Later on, Kyouko shows Amamiya the printed scarf that she bought. Amamiya says that it looks good that is it really just 500 yen. After taking it out from her bag, Kyouko gives Amamiya the receipt. Amamiya says that it is obviously not cheap and Kyouko’s amazing. Kyouko says yes, at that time, she wondered if there is a mistake for it took out so many zeroes that she even confirmed it at the checkout counter. She felt that she had a 5 years worth of cold sweat. After paying Kyouko, Amamiya smiles and thanks her for she is a big help. Kyouko says that it is no big deal and it is the duty of a substitute manager. Removing her upper jumper suit to put on the scarf, Amamiya says but today, isn’t there a film shoot. Kyouko says that she got the director’s consent so it is alright because she only needs to have a couple of re-shooting of Natsu’s scenes. And today in the afternoon, she has some other work. She had asked the director if he can give her a break this morning.
Amamiya says that it seems that she would have to seriously apologize to the director because it will ruin his few opportunities to show off that he is a genius. Since there is some time before Kyouko leaves, Amamiya invites Kyouko for lunch with a specially prepared bento for the manager along with some delicious plastic bottled tea. Kyouko smiles and accepts her invitation. At TBM station, walking Kanae looks at her watch and it is almost 3pm. There is still time before the scheduled recording ends so she decides to eat lunch. Just when she is going to look for a place to eat, she sees Kyouko who turns to see her. Sparkling with flowers, Kyouko is about to call Kanae. Expertly hitting away the flowers, Kanae greets Kyouko who squeals over that ruthless [greeting] from Kanae that she has this sad unspeakable joy. Kanae asks if right now, she is going to film ‘Yappa Kimagure Rock’. Kyouko says yes. While walking together, Kanae says that even if she thought of it before but Kyouko would unexpectedly still do that chicken thing. She asks isn’t it time for Kyouko to get someone else to replace her in doing that. It isn’t a job for someone like her who is able to act in a serialized drama. Kyouko says that she’ll think of it if she can get somewhat like a leading role. Kanae thinks that right now, she is in a double starred television drama and not like that stupid acting. There is some cutie-cutie girl telling Kanae about how to call her own name properly.
Thinking that kid ate up Kanae, Kyouko exclaims could it be, obviously right now, the drama she is acting in isn’t made into a topic but is this the lead’s arrogance and pride. Kanae tells her that she didn’t think that, it is the nonsense of the television drama’s script and the actor’s ability is totally unproportioned. [<- I think she is talking about the period drama that Lory got her in wherein she hates the script and the actors are just randomly chosen; or any similar type of drama she is currently in] Kyouko takes the opportunity to ask her if she has seen the first episode of Box’R. Looking away, Kanae says that she didn’t. <- she actually didn’t watch it as scheduled. Kanae says that right now, she is in a new series so she is very busy. Kyouko is teary-eyed for she wanted Kanae to say that she watched it. Kyouko asks if she is talking about that ‘Mizumori Series’. When Kanae affirms it, Kyouko happily praises her and she’ll anticipate it. Then, Kyouko says that Mizumori Series isn’t at TBM. Kanae says that it isn’t because today, she came here as someone’s attendant [/accompanying someone]. Thinking that she is also a substitute manager, Kyouko asks if it is a Love Me work. Kanae pauses and says that she cannot really say that it is that. This puzzled Kyouko for it isn’t Love Me work yet she came..not as a substitute manger but an attendant..what’s up.
Kanae says that there is something that she wants to ask her since they bumped into each other. “Is your mother a lawyer?” After becoming speechless, Kyouko asks why she would suddenly. Kanae says that in this television series, there is a lawyer supervisor and their surnames are the same. “It seems that her name is Mogami Saena.” Looking thoughtful, Kyouko says that just now, she just so happen to meet her mother at Fuji station. She wonders out loud why when obviously her mother doesn’t seem to be the type who is related to the entertainment business. Kanae tells her that she heard that Saena is substituting for someone else. The supervisor of their television series should be someone else who is part of the main staff, a certain Katagiri Ken [guesswork from 片桐憲] who has all sorts of position and a critic. Very lively..a crocodile face. Kyouko exclaims that if he is also a funny crocodile faced lawyer. Kanae informs her that it seems that Ken has collapsed due to excessive fatigue so the jobs that he accepted before was passed over to his subordinate to finish them. The television’s supervisor seems to be the assistant, Kyouko’s mother so maybe she went to Fuji to work as a substitute. Kyouko says that is possible, for her to appear in that news program.
Kanae admits that yesterday, Sanae helped her a bit with the script. This surprises Kyouko. Kanae says that before, at the karaoke box, no..because before when Kyouko mentioned about the secret regarding her childhood friend, she mentioned about her mother doing some lawyer-related work. Upon seeing the script, the moment that Kanae saw the name, she wondered if this person is Kyouko’s mother but when she really met her.. Kyouko says that she definitely felt that it is absolutely impossible. Kanae says that she confirmed that they are definitely mother-daughter. Surprised Kyouko asks why. Kanae says that it is because the two of them are very similar. This totally freaks Kyouko out for they are totally not the same and this is the first time she heard someone say that. Kanae apologizes and says that she made a mistake, they are totally not alike even if their DNA is 100% identical but it is the degree that one would doubt during one’s life. Kanae corrects herself by saying that the person Saena is similar with isn’t the ordinary Kyouko but the television drama’s Natsu especially when she is expressionless. It is like a doll that completely lack emotion in one’s expressions and temperament. Looking surprised, Kyouko says that actually, Kanae saw her drama. This startles Kanae.
Kanae tries to deny it for she didn’t watch it on schedule but it is because of the television set recorded it on its own when she is just checking what was recorded. Happy Kyouko says that she understands for their television also records on its own <- daruma living room. If one has to input a keyword in advance, she’ll input Kanae’s name. She comments about how the latest television shocks the daruma couple. Looking at embarrassed Kanae, Kyouko thanks her for she is very happy since she is deeply loved. Kanae comments that for her, that emotion [Kyouko is showing] is quite reserved. This made Kyouko want to hug her as she shouts that Kanae is amazing and she’s so happy for she is deeply loved. Pushing Kyouko away, Kanae angrily shouts if she isn’t finished yet. Kyouko apologizes and says that right now, she feels a bit complicated. Kanae asks why. Kyouko says that it is regarding she and her mother seems to be very similar. Looking somewhat surprised, Kanae wonders a bit and asks if Kyouko hates that. Kyouko sadly smiles and says that it is her mother who hates that. At Viride General Law Office, Saena tells a sobbing woman that it is alright, they will do their utmost in accordance to her request and she’ll properly defend her. The woman bows and exclaims that she’ll leave it to her. Outside the room, the secretary is talking with someone on the phone. She tells the other party that she is very worried for if that fever continues, he has to be hospitalized but then..
She notices that Saena is looking at her. Hanging up the phone, the secretary apologizes. She explains that her child had a fever and was bedridden for three days so she is a bit worried. Saena tells her that it is alright but at least finish giving tea to the client. She reprimands the secretary to at least call on the phone after doing her smallest degree of work. As Saena leaves, the irked secretary calls someone and angrily complains out loud that just now, she got scolded by that iceberg lawyer, yes, that ‘unrivaled queen lawyer’ and she is just talking on the phone for 15 minutes, so what’s up with that..it isn’t like she is talking for an hour. What’s the big deal and just get someone who is free to pour the tea. She was telling Saena about her child being sick and that person definitely doesn’t have a child for if she did, she will definitely understand the feelings of a parent. Saena probably heard those rants but she looks unfazed. At a dining hall, while stirring her drink, Kyouko says that actually, there is no big issue that it can reach the news since it is merely an ordinary family’s parent-child relationship which is more intense [than normal]. A note says that Kanae’s stomach is grumbling so they are now at TBM’s dining hall. While eating a salad, Kanae says that a while, Kyouko said that she saw her mother at Fuji so what happened.
Kyouko says of course it is very ordinary, she ignored her. After pausing, Kanae says that maybe she just didn’t pay attention to her or because her hair became brown that she didn’t notice. Kyouko says that from the first look, it is probably like that but on the second time when their eyes met, she scowled. Kanae says that she is wearing that kind of outfit and ordinary people will also scowl. After a pause, Kyouko says that person won’t change her expression with strangers whom she had briefly encountered even if they are wearing a strange funny outfit. “Ever since before, that person will only show that expression when I did something that made her unhappy--” In her cubicle, Saena is reading an article about Box’R. It mentions about the ratings to be unexpectedly low on the first episode. This time the strongest killer weapon used here is Dark Moon’s Mio. The role by newbie Kyouko that is still fresh on people’s memory. Everyone anticipated a gloomy-like Mio that surpasses Mio. But actually it is far from Mio’s viciousness, thus the audience criticize it as ‘disappointing’. Even if it is said, ‘it just started so there is room for improvement’. After all, for it is foreshadowed that since it previously fallen so low, it can still rise up. So afterwards, it makes people anticipate the most, the progress of this drama. Then, Saena reads an information page of Kyouko on LME page which mentions her birthday, place of birth, height, blood type, expertise = carrot/daikon flower, hobbies, filmography and being part of Love Me. Saena scowls.
The scene briefly changes to Kyouko saying that person has indeed noticed her. Back at the lawyer office, someone says that her forehead has that deep Mogami river, just like in the past, which he hasn’t seen for a long time. [<- Mogami river is one of the three most rapid rivers in Japan]. As Saena looks at him, the man says that once her heart’s water supply overflows, it will definitely cause a torrent but then, he doesn’t hate that despite it wasting her good-looks. He tells her, but during work, it is better to be a bit callous [/unfeeling]. He praises her television appearance this morning. Saena says that if it is possible, she hopes that he doesn’t make her go in front of television again for she isn’t quite good at it. The man says that he is in favor of that and he’ll definitely get sensei [their boss] to quickly recover as soon as possible. A secretary passes and welcomes Fujimichi [藤道/the man] back. Saena tells him that furthermore, he must stop those showbiz activities. Fujimichi laughs and says speaking of that, didn’t she record some program a few days ago and it seems that to be after sensei has collapsed. He asks when she said that it will be broadcast, today or tomorrow. Saena closes her eyes and says, who knows, she already forgot. Back to the two, Kanae looks surprised over somewhat sad Kyouko who just told her, ‘Furthermore, she always felt that my existence is absolutely detestable. Always. *crying young Kyouko look at Saena who held up her hand and stared at her* Starting from childhood, --always--” Next chapter will be out in Japan on February 20th.
Comment: Kyouko had more or less handled the meeting well and I think it is also thanks to her Love Me friends whom she is with afterwards. She’ll probably sink in depression if they weren’t there. Amamiya did her part by thanking her for the scarf and inviting her for lunch. Kanae did her part by unconsciously mentioning about watching her drama and listening to Kyouko’s painful childhood. It is good to know that even if some people rejected/hated her existence, there are those who showed that they care and love her especially at this time ^^ Because of the hint, I wonder if Kyouko will be a lead in a series soon. And of course, most of us will hope that her leading man will be.. ^^ Also, Ren ought to know who Bou really is before Kyouko ditches that role. So, about the mother, it makes me wonder how can a mother hate her own daughter that much? Even if others say that it is better to be hated than ignored/’I don’t care’, but to be hated that way.. I do not know if it is something that Kyouko can move her mother to scowl compared to the other people she deals with wherein she tends to be expressionless. Obviously, she isn’t mother material for she would rather have that secretary do her work rather than talk on the phone regarding her sick child. So, it is more or less established that work is her priority.

So, it does make one think that Kyouko seems to be an unwanted child..something like an ‘accident’ that happened, or something worse than that. I mean Saena doesn’t seem to be wants to be touched by young Kyouko. So, it seems to be more than just not getting good grades that her mother left her. Actually, I would think that it is better that Saena left her rather than for her mother to always treat her like that until she is all grown up. That might be irreparable damage to Kyouko’s self-confidence and self-worth. Well, from her answer to Fujimichi, it seems that Saena doesn’t want to have anything to do with showbiz where Kyouko is. Yet, she is curious enough to check what Kyouko is doing then be displeased about it. ^^; I don’t think she volunteered to do the showbiz stuff to replace her boss though that would depend when she knew that Kyouko is in showbiz. Saena does seem to have really severed ties with Kyouko by treating her as if she doesn’t exist/as a stranger by ignoring her yet she cannot help but scowl. AThough I’m not sure if she will make the Fuwas do what she wanted. I mean, I’m not too sure if she disapproves of Kyouko’s showbiz career and wants her out of it thus get the Fuwas to convince Kyouko. That is based on what Shou mentioned before. Somehow, with the comparison with Natsu and Saena, it does make me wonder if it is possible for a cold-hearted person to raise a kid well. Anyway, we’ll probably know more about that stuff later on. 2. Thanks for the update.man saenas reaction is so cold.scowling at your own childkyouko really looks like an unwanted child.or was saenas upbringing by her own parents so strict that she turned out this way.whatever the case leaving ones child is not justified.glad that kyouko took the sudden meeting well.i hope ren gets to know about this matter soon not like the last time with the beagle where he was the last person to know.and one thing rens father n kyoukos hometown are same right?so does that mean saena n rens father know each other?

      Indeed.

Hm..maybe he will..Yashiro might tell him. Also, there is another program where Saena is in, he might see that upon his return.

Ya...though not sure how big/small is that town for them to know each other. I would think that for the time when Ren/Kuon stayed there, they are living somewhere else since it was never exposed that he is an ordinary kid and not a fairy. If it is a small town, I'm sure people will be gossiping if there is a foreigner looking kid is around.

  4. Thanks for the summary Kat!

I wonder if we'd get to know about Kyoko's past in the next chapter, but then again there is no rush for it will be revealed because we will find out somewhere in this arc. Truthfully, I can't fully hate Saena until I know the reason why she treats Kyoko as she does. I wonder if Kyoko got into a life threatening situation would her cold exterior break. Also out of all people Moko had to be the one accompanying Saena. I'd like to see that secretary's face to find that the ice queen has a 17 year old daughter.

Hm..maybe or it will be like Ren's..just a few scenes here and there.

Is that so. Maybe, she will.

Is that so..what kind of expression are you expecting? Shock? Feel sorry for her daughter?

    2. I think that woman would probably feel sorry for Kyoko, from the way Saena acts.

    3. Oh, I see, Brittany. I thought it is more on how she would react to Saena herself.

    1. I might be stretching, but I am thinking that Kyouko's father is Fujimichi. Saena and Fujimichi have definitely known each other for a long time, at least since Kyouko was very young (my reasoning: Kyouko stated that her mother only scowls in relation to Kyouko-with everyone else she is expressionless; and the last time he [Fujimichi] has seen her do it was a very long time ago; which was when Saena took care of Kyouko (before she let Shou’s parent take care of her). Also, someone welcomed Fujimichi back; maybe he was transferred to another country. Which is why he was never in Kyouko life-and he might not know she is his daughter.

Anyway, I assumed Kyouko’s father is another lawyer, Saena is extremely career driven, so it is likely that Kyouko’s father would be someone connected to the only place that Kyouko’s mother is always at….work. She is not the type of person to go to a bar or club to meet someone. I look forward to find out either way!

Hmmm i dont know but i dont think its fujimichi.and as claudia yanez said we mite see some thing which makes her human.but still i wouldnt agree treating your own child like a plague whatever the circumstance.or was kyouko a result of some dreadful incident.(even thinking about it is too heart wrenching for me.i dont want kyoukos existence to be so sad)hope there is a good reason for saenas attitude

Hehe, the wish of all SB readers ^^

True...and no wonder Kyouko still bears that 'trauma'.

    5. Possible..though I'm not too sure if he is Kyouko's father. She acts a bit too 'professional' with him and so does he..more like just a long time colleague. Maybe at that time, she goes back and forth from Tokyo for work and most of the time, left Kyouko with the Fuwa. I'm curious though what her exact relation with the Fuwa-s. I always got the impression that they lived with the Fuwas then. ^^;

      Hehe..how about a client?

      You're welcome, Mister Fantastic ^^

    6. Kyoko's father? My best guess is: RICK.

The man who died because of Ren.

Why? Because Kyoko's father never mentioned, not even by the Fuwas, so her mother was her only relative. I think she was an accident, an unexpected result of an unknown love story. Well, I think Saena wanted her, because she gave her life, and didn't let her adopted despite she abandoned her. But when she realized, that Rick chose someone else, she became bitter and started to blame her child. Maybe she never told Rick about their daughter...

Kyoko's given name is written by katakana. Like she is not a full japanese, just a half. If there were a kanji to her name, we could see the mother's feeling toward her child. I do not speak japanese, but searching at the online dictionary, one of the meaning of KYO is falsehood, KO is just a child maybe, as she was born because of a scam, a result of cheating - well I would really-really misunderstood everything :). But I could imagine, as everytime you say your kid's name, you always have to remember the sorrowful past events... which you want to erase, but there is an always crying sticky note of your biggest mistake in your life to always remind you...

      Quite a living hell...

It is not Kyoko's fault to be born like this, but everyone would be happy, if Saena gave her to a lovely couple after her birth. Living separately is better for both of them.

    7. I don't think rick is her dad rick was probably in his 20's when he died and tina is obviously not seana that's just weird. Rick would be close to kyoko and ren's ages a little older if I had to guess. From the pic of tina you can tell it's not seana and from everything he taught kuon i don't think rick would be disloyal to his lover.

    8. To Judit Hegyi. Kyoko's name is in katakana because that is her stage name. Her real name is spelled with the traditional kanji (meaning respectful child) and her stage name is written with katakana with the meaning Tokyo Child, though they are said exactly the same way. Besides Rick would have been way too young to father kyoko (he died when Koun was about 15 and they were close in age (18-20 at the most). plus kyoko was already 10-11 at the time, which would mean that rick would have been at most 8-10 when she was born.

    2. i think its going to end soon. dont you think that the reason saena shows up so suddenly is to let kyoko overcome her drauma that lets her want to not love again? saena probaly has the most fault at her fear for love. cause kyoko is just to strong to be affected so much just cause of sho. but if he aumented the drauma she already had from her mother it all makes more sense no? so now starts the arc for kyoko to overcome her drauma to be able to love freely again. then now that ren has overcome his "i dont have the right to have someone special" drauma so the only gab between them is now kyokos fear. i think them getting togher isnt as far as it seems.. then again kyoko didnt get famous jet. so maybe the next role she plays makes her really pobular? im really curios to see how its goinng to play out ;)

    3. Hehe..end soon..ya, though because of the slow pace of the story...soon might be a very, very long time in our time. ^^;

I get your point about Kyouko's 'love trauma' though I won't think Saena is the most at fault if it is about Ren, because with Ren, it is more on 'romantic love' which is what she had with Shou.

Yup, Kyouko would most like overcome that..or at least, resolve that issue with her mother. ^^

Maybe...this series is very hard to predict ^^

  11. I can't believe this Saena! What a cold mother she is ∑(O_O;)
To consider it as an ordinary reaction from a mother who hasn't seen her own child for eight years( not sure of the number), I really feel pity for Kyouko. She even doesn't know how it feels like to have a caring loving mother. She is a good girl, and she indeed deserves much better life than that with her lovely prince (*≧▽≦)
Many thanks to you Kat-Sama, for your work's nicely done (^ω^)

This Saena is really awkward but I can not hate her... Somehow I like her and hope that she is sad for not being by Kyouko's side (I mean, that look when she was seeing Kyouko's profile was not of disappointment but of regret and sadness).I think she just doesn't know how to treat Kyouko now and that coldness and scowl are just a way to hide her true feelings. But after all, I'm completely agree that she didn't expect and wanted to get pregnant, or something worse.
And of course, I'm missing Ren too much T-T

Kisses and once more, thank you very much for your good work *----*

  13. Thank you for the fast summary!
To be quite honest, I wonder if Saena is really that detached and uncaring. Time and time again in this series we are presented with "bad guys" that turn out to be nice people who are just misunderstood. Kanae was like that, Amamiya was like that, even Ren was at some point a kind of antagonist, so I have a feeling it must be something deeper than that. Specially if you consider this is the same author of Tokyo Crazy Paradise where the female lead was abandoned by her mother, who believed she had no right to raise her daughter since she had chosen her life as a weapon above her life as a mother. There too, the mother figure was redeemed by showing that she truly cared for her daughter, but was forced to give her away by her circumstances.
I have no idea how Saena's redemption will come, but I think that Saena's frown/anger is more directed at herself for not being able to do her job as a mother properly, finally realizing motherhood is not something she can do and deciding to leave it up to Sho's family, which seems a more nurturing and appropriate environment. Maybe she believes that a woman cannot juggle work and motherhood, or maybe the circumstances of Kyoko's birth were traumatic. I am still expecting something that makes her human, since, so far, SB has never had a character that is truly evil or irredeemable.

Of course the main force will be ren i can't wait to see him ,and i have faith in kyouko she grew so much since the start of the series , i loved seeing her composed and calm when facing her mom but i feel like we may see her breakdown in this arc .

Kyouko and ren as main characters oh hell yeah i would love to see that they were epic as the heel siblings .By the way did Box R and dark moon get bad ratings or was it just kyouko i thought she did a great job ???

    1. On your last point there, Dark Moon's ratings were through the roof. The first episode of Box R didn't do so well ratings-wise, but it IS only the first episode of a series without a Ren Tsuruga...

    2. Thanks for reading, sofia ^-^

Hm..not sure what she would say. What do you think she would say?

      Indeed.

Those reviews that she is reading tends to focus on Kyouko's performance. I do recall that Dark Moon ratings are quite good as Sylvia-of-Wings mentioned..somewhat recall a chart wherein Kyouko, Ren, and the director are talking about it.

Maybe the critics are harsh on a newcomer? I'm sure she did a great job especially for a newcomer. People still recall the Mio though probably like the director, they expect her to do something similar with that in the new series. Also, the ratings will also have to do with the whole series, and also the cast. Dark Moon is also a 'remake' so there might already be a 'fixed audience' for it. Unlike Dark Moon, the cast of Box'R doesn't seem to be that well-known or veteran ones.

    3. @ sylvia-of-wings i thought so but based on the critics she was reading it seems like both shows didn't do well .

I don't know something like what are you doing here ? but i guess after all this time it is better not to say anything .

Ya kyouko was amazing and everybody praised her yet i was starting to doubt myself when i read this chapter .Oh well i'm pretty sure kyouko would have sooner or later a role that would make her a star i do hope it happen soon ^^

By the way about why saena hates kyouko and is so cold to her ,i was thinking of something i know SB isn't that dark of manga but what if the reason she hates her is because kyouko is the product of rape ? I mean it better be something really important and not something like because of you i couldn't achieve my dreams or some crap like that .The only reason i could excuse such a behavior is if the child is born from rape otherwise i don't see any good reason .

      Delete
    4. Yup, I'm sure Kyouko will, sofia. Of course, for us, the question is when.

I think it is more than 'because of you I couldn't achieve my dreams' because she probably achieved her dreams now yet she is still scowling at Kyouko. As Kyouko mentioned, something like a disapproval of what she is doing or something like that.

Well, if it is like that, as others asked, why did she give birth to Kyouko. In a way, it seems to be highly probable that it is something that happened or changed her view towards Kyouko after birth.

      Delete
    5. Ya i hope that happen very soon so she will get better projects become more popular and maybe if gets male admiers this will push ren to be more open in his affection .

To me more than disapproval of what she is doing it seems like she is disapproving of her existence as a whole at least that's what i got from the way she looks at kyouko .

True but to have such a cold and cruel attitude toward your child i can't think of anything else , i just hope it is a very good reason that makes sense .

    6. True, sofia. And as usual, we can only wait and see how it turns out.

    7. I think that maybe Saena was a Kyouko. Meaning, I bet she had a bright future, gave it up to be a housewife to the man she loved, only to be horribly betrayed and left with nothing but a kid to show for it. So she sees kyouko as a reminder of her stupidity, and an obstacle to her moving forward.

Thanks, Kat! I always look forward to your summaries!

  15. Thanks so much for the fast summary! Poor Kyouko. This story always has unexpected storylines, makes it so hard to guess why Saena is coldhearted! I'm leaning towards Kyouko's father being a deadbeat and left when he found out Saena was expecting a baby, or maybe Kyouko's birth or care kept the mother away at a time when the father unexpectedly died or something. Must be something terrible to hate the sight of Kyouko so much. :(

I'm also concerned about BoxR's bad ratings. Even Kanae pretended that she hadn't seen it, I assume because she didn't think it was very good. Based on the review Saena read, they don't seem to like the way Kyouko portrayed Natsu... they were expecting Mio again? Or did Natsu's true personality not come out in the first episode? (Bad choice of the producer or whoever if that's the case.) I guess it would be too easy for Kyouko to only have popular dramas, but hopefully it's just a small hiccup to further the story.

    1. Thanks for reading, squeaker ^-^ Indeed.

I don't think it is because of that. Kanae is somewhat of a tsundere and probably do not want Kyouko gushing all over her if she told her that.

Ya, they are expecting Mio again..just like what the director originally wanted. I don't think it did..Natsu is the 'antagonist' and in most cases, the focus is usually on the protagonist on the first episode. True..or something for her mother to be unhappy about.

As for Kyoko being an "unwanted" child. That's probably the case. I wonder what circumstances led to Saena choosing to continue the pregnancy and raise a child considering her temperament. Not everyone is suited to being a parent and Saena probably knew this from the beginning. As a child who grew up in a similar situation to Kyoko (except without Shou, Ren, and otherwise), her mom was clearly not ready to be a parent. I can't fully blame Saena or condemn her actions because she was just thinking of herself. What individual who has only been responsible for his/her self will suddenly be able to take care of another person? Takes time to become a parent. I just don't think Saena felt it was worthwhile to try and become a parent. I'm sure she knew it wasn't working out so she decides to let Kyoko stay with the kind Fuwas, who could be Kyoko's surrogate parents, and let them handle parenthood for her. I'm sure Saena, being the type of person she is, could have easily did an abortion but chose not to. All of it is very interesting! I'm really curious to find out more about Saena and why she thought it would be better to keep Kyoko. In a weird way, I think Saena actually is invested in her daughter. She sends money to the Fuwas, she looks up Kyoko's information, and has been looking for her (Although in a subdued way). Her faces scowls while thinking of Kyoko so she does feel something. I think secretly the reason why Saena wasn't a parent to Kyoko might have been because she didn't want Kyoko to take after her. I'm sure Saena knows what she did to Kyoko wasn't what a "good" parent would do. She was a bad example of a parent and to spare kyoko from becoming the same way, she (in a way) did a "good" thing by leaving Kyoko with the Fuwas. I guess that could be the singular "good" parenting choice she made. But in the end, the choice affected both of them greatly. Kyoko got the short end of the stick (I am #TEAMKYOKO!!!) and left scars on her heart. (POORRRRR KYOKO!) I'm sure Saena feels some guilt and regret. We'll have to see in future chapters!!!

I also can't wait to find out how Ren's and Kyoko's relationship with each other will progress from here now that her mom has shown up! The quote thing that Amamiya mentions that Kyoko relates to ren, I wonder where she got it from. Plus that subtle smile above Amamiya, whose mouth could that be? Very interesting. Ren hurry back soon! Gosh, it's tough waiting one month for a new chapter! (I've been following Skip beat for almost 10 years now) I don't see the end in sight yet, but I know the inevitable will happen. I do wish the chapters came out sooner but but but!!! I don't think I could handle it if I could see the ending in the near future. So let each month be a treat! Cheers! :D

    2. Yeah, full flashback chapters wouldn't be SB-esque :< But I sure want a good dose of flashbacks!
.... Not that I want my heart to ache anymore than it already is aching, but I want to know about Saena's motives. I've seen ppl say it might be because of Kyouko's father (rape? I think that's too much for this series), but I think it might Saena's own upbringing. I'm wondering why she carried on with the pregnancy if she knew she wouldn't stand the kid >_>

Aaaah, don't say Ren's name! I'll miss him all over again! T__T

  23. With the way chapter 219 left off, I thought Kyouko would be a mess after running into her mother. I was at least hoping that with her Love Me uniform armor she'd be alright. But what really helped her out was having Amamiya and Kaena there. And that she has a new family with LME and the daruma couple. What I really can't wait for is for Ren to meet Kyouko's mother and give her that glare he's famous for when he's mad. She thinks she has a glare? Oh boy, wait til she's on the receiving end of Ren's glare.

I didn't read the comments, so maybe someone write something alike before, but about Kyoko's mother personality i have 2 idea:
    1. She the same as Kuon. Why? When she left Kyoko it was the same way, how Kuon left his parents (not watching back). Maybe she just didn't know what she can do to make her happy. Everything she did just gave a lot pain to her daughter. So she think that she will be happy without her. And the another thing. When Ren met his father after a while, he was hateful too. Maybe they just wanted to know, how the others feeling (hating them, afraid from them)...
    2. She saw herself in Kyoko, when she was young. Maybe she did a big mistake in her life, and every time when she see Kyoko, she remember. Maybe we will get a sad love story about her past...
But usually when i guess, its become a different option in the end XD
But i hope, the first will be true (or close), and when Kyoko tell this to Ren, he will tell some stories about his childhood to her :D

Well, both do have points and are possible. Of course, the always scowling at Kyouko seems to be something different aside from the fact that she do know that she is causing her pain as you mentioned in 1. In 2, hm..is that like being 'stupidly in love' with Shou? = her mistake in the past.

  30. Why didn't Saena greet Kyoko?

The same reason Sho did not greet her at the second episode, after the failing audience at LME.

She did not recognize her! If she received photos about her daughter from th Fuwas, Kyoko is a long, black haired smiling girl to her. Even watching Mio is verified the image. She did not expected her with short chestnut hair and not to smile... Furthermore, wearing a worker's uniform... And Kyoko is famuos about her transformations :). Nobody reconize her, if she doesn't want!

    1. I checked the raw pages, and my quess was right! Saena did not recognized her daugther, just after she checked Kyoko's profile! What a shock!

    2. Is that so, Judit, you think she didn't recognize her. Then, Kyouko was mistaken about her mother's scowl? That it is towards her.

      I would think that she checked the site since she is curious about the Love Me uniform she is wearing. Probably scowl again after reading the 'love me'. ^^;

      Delete
    3. Probably Kyoko was mistaken. She recognized her mother immediately, but Saena didn't. Saena just saw a staring young girl in worker's uniform, that's why she scowled. She behaves like this with other people, like her secretary. She hates the work of TV, and were in bad mood. Kyoko was a simple nuisance, who was in her way, and didn't let her stepping out from the elevator.

There is a reason why she watched Dark Moon - maybe some connection with the original Tsukigomori and Kyoko's birth... ( I really-really hope that Kyoko's dad is not Hizuri Kuu, just someone around him!!!! Maybe Rick who was belonged to Ren's mother. Ren had to be born around Tsukigomori's filming time, so there is a possibility, that her mother came to Japan, and relaxed with her baby, or pregnancy by Kuu's relatives together with her family. And the young Rick met the young Saena ... But it is just a possibility. At this case Kyoko and Ren are cousins :( The other possibility is Takarada Rory, who was around Kuu, starting his business of LME, but well, it would be too harsh, won't it?) She didn't watch her daughter (there was no need to get her consent, with Takarada Rory's permission, so I don't think Kyoko contacted her about the entertainment business, just lately for the passport), she watched her old favourite series, and simply liked Mio...

Maybe she doesn't even know exactly, just suspicious about that this Kyoko is her Kyoko. I doubt Kyoko and she had heartfelt talks about their lives... She doesn't know why her daugther lives in Tokyo. Rory also didn't contacted her, he just pointed her on tv and was curious whether she is connected to Kyoko. The birthdate and birthplace are good hints, but Kyoko's stage name is altered from the given one. And Japan is big enough to exist another girl in Kyoto who was born with the similar features.

Watching "love me" would be a great shock to someone like Saena, but topping with reading this on her own daughter, whom she is unable to love... Harsh.

    4. True, Judit but she didn't scowl with the secretary. It is just the 'usual cold expression'. I'm not sure if it is true with work or that is the after effects of seeing Kyouko's info page.

Hm..I don't think she watched Dark Moon..since I get the impression that she only read the reviews of Dark Moon. Like Kyouko, her mother doesn't seem to be the type who has any bit interest in tv shows and stuff related to the entertainment world. It does make me curious if she is like that since she is young. Since you mentioned, she might like the series when she is young.

Lory probably knows who she is because Kyouko ought to have written her parents name on her resume for LME. I think her mother knows through Shou or his parents because even before she met Kyouko, she is already researching on Dark Moon. So, she should know that Kyouko is currently an actress though probably didn' t know about being a Love Me member. I guess we'll know for sure later on ^^

      Indeed.

  34. Thanks for the summary! I do wonder why Saena would go to the Fuwas and tell them to convince Kyoko when she pretty much just gave birth to Kyoko and apparently wants nothing to do with her.
she wants to control her like a mother now but when she actually needed her she left her? so confusing... I just hope she just continues with her life instead of scowling everytime she sees Kyoko and hurt her even more... Saena gives me the vibe of those women/men that had children irresponsibly or have irresponsible relationships and then want to blame what happened on the kids... like, maybe Kyokos father left her and she blames Kyoko for that everytime she saw her face? idk but its too sad.. Even when I believe some people can change, I hope they dont make Kyoko endure her mother's mistreatment or be all happy bouncy with her mother from one day to the other unless her mother apologizes. Its curious how Ren was the one running away from his parents despite how much they love him and they have to act like they arent related but yet Saena ran away from Kyoko and shes the one ignoring her own daughter

Since she doesn't have anything to do with her, ask the 'surrogate parents' to do what she would want to do? Of course, that depends if she disapproves of the acting.

Well, it isn't definite that she wants to control Kyouko or have anything to do with her. For now, I would consider it as curiosity. True..it might be like that and probably not. Well, she probably have her reasons for it since it is very unnatural for a mother to be like that.

Ya, depends if her mother is still going to do something or as usual, ignore her existence.

  35. Thank you... I really appreciate these updates. Skip Beat! is my #1 favorite series and having to wait for the books to be released in the USA is painful lol. It seems to me that the last few chapters have been transition chapters... laying down some groundword before setting off something big, as you say, we've got a few hints as to what that might be. I wonder if Sho will use that as a way to wedge himself back into Kyoko's life and attention. I can't wait for Ren to come back. She's definitely going to need some heavy backup if my foreboding is correct here.

That mother... really... I briefly had some hope for her when she started showing interest in Kyoko's whereabouts. But to do nothing but scowl, and potentially judge her as 'lesser' or 'unworthy' when she hasn't even SEEN the actual shows Kyoko has acted in, not cool. Not cool at all.

  37. I think the reason for Saenas attitude toward kyouko is simply awkwardness- She does not seem that much older than kyouko maybe she had her in youth. She seems to scowl when she doesn't know how to react and perhaps she swatted away at kyouko as a child because of fear...something like i don't know how to reciprocate feelings...for nearly 10 YEARS i've been reading this series and I've felt there was some deeper hidden truth to their relationship. MINOR NOTES: Headcannon-Kyoukos father was a teacher and gave Saena a child in hs/college. and BO- I can't wait for Ren to find out- I definately think he will find out after she quits. the replacement will reveal that he is not same actor! -BOOGIEKUN/TUMBLR

  39. I think Saena frowns about "love me" emblem.
and the way she distances herself from kyoko, ignoring her completely, it's not something a mother who hates her child would do, i think. it is as if she does it on purpose, holds kyoko far away from her, plays being unreachable for kyoko. just a guess, though.
i secretly hope kyoko to treat her in a cold manner too. and ren to be super awesome and supportive etc, i think the problem with kyoko's mother will be one of ways to become more intimate with ren.

    QUESTION: Kat, I want to try read SB on japanese, but it has so much kanji! can you say, who is that manga aimed for? i thought shoujo manga would have furigana at LEAST, but that's not the case here. i just wanna know, how many kanji i am supposed to know for reading skip beat.. ;_;
thanks! and thank you for summaries :)

    1. As a mistake I dowloaded once a full japanese chapter of SB, it had furiganas. Maybe you found the chinese version. They are similar. :D

    2. Ya, highly probable.

That is possible, and I guess the thing that that makes us all curious is 'why' she does that.

Ya, most likely, it will bring Ren and Kyouko closer ^^

Ah, I read the Chinese scanlation. Since Judit mention that it might be the Chinese one, the tip to know if it is the Chinese scanlation is the watermark. On every page, they use a red lotus watermark with the site: reddfaces.net.

    1. If you mean the english translation , there is no schedule to it , it comes 2 to 3 weeks after been released , sometimes after a 1 month or .....
check s2scanlation website , they are the only group who still didn't dropped it , but they are going to , since they lack on staff and this manga is dragging and the stuff working on it got bored with it .

  41. Thank you! I think Saena's emotions may be a bit more complicated then that. It is possible that she realized that she was lacking in maternal feelings or just unable to properly sympathize with her child. Since work was easier to deal with, she found someone else to take care of Kyouko and devoted herself to work - or her dream of being a lawyer was easier for her to achieve then being a Mom. I suspect even if Kyouko was not a planned child, she was originally wanted, but maybe it was concession by Kyouko's Mom to please her Dad, and once he was gone, the motivation to try was also gone.

    1. You're welcome, Deb ^-^

Possible..and based on that, maybe they had an agreement that the father is going to take care of Kyouko but things didn't happen as planned? Yup, I think it is going to be a bit more complicated ^^ Hope the mangaka pleasantly surprise us.

  42. Every chapter without Ren is making me sadder and sadder... And the next chapter is going to be a flashback? 2 More months without seeing Ren then T.T Thanks for recapping the chapter by the way, thank you.

    1. Not sure..based on previous chapters, there is no tendency to have a whole chapter of flashback..usually, it is bits and pieces all over the place.

      Thanks for reading ^-^

  43. I predict this series will end in 2016 at the latest. It seems their were rumors as early as 2009 that it was supposed to end last year (2014). I think that was the original plan but then the author decided all couldn't be resolved in that time frame and negotiated an extension. Kyouko's career is taking off, she and Ren/Kuon have a mutual relationship (though there are a couple of issues that need resolving here) and she right now she is confronting and dealing with her parental issues.
A lot of people conplain about how slow moving this story is but few people realise that its publication schedule has as much to do with that as the authors plot choices. I started reading Boys over Flowers after it was mostly complete, however, this was a story where the romantic development between the two mains was only slightly faster. It ended at 37 volumes, but took many fewer years to complete. The reason was that it was published weekly rather then monthly. The magazine it was published in came out twice a week with alternating series, so most got published once a week. The magazine Skip Beat is published in only comes out twice a month with alternating series, so most only get published once a month.

    1. Weekly? Deb. That must be way, way before...because right now, I don't think there is a weekly shoujo magazine..only every two weeks.

True, the monthly release makes it seem slower because before, it is a bit more tolerable when SB! is released every two weeks. I don't know why though, when there was a time she is taking more breaks..then it ends up becoming a monthly.

      Maybe...though my estimate would be the arc regarding her mother would end next year if we go by monthly release. ^^;
