Last Game [Chapter 30]

Yanagi has finished taking a bath and tells the other guys that they can use the bathroom. Fujimoto shares some watermelon with him. While Yanagi is eating, Fujimoto comments about his good mood. Yanagi says is that so, true..then he starts chuckling. Fujimoto comments that he’s really gross but it is true, Kujou is currently concerned about him. This made Yanagi laugh again and say that’s right. Fujimoto mutters that’s the reason, how annoying. She is speechless when Yanagi is saying that Kujou finally realize his excellence and it really made him use up a lot of strength. She tells him that currently Kujou’s whereabouts is unknown and Souma is also not around. Yanagi says that most probably Kujou is helping Souma’s mother and there are many places that Souma can go to. This surprises Fujimoto that she says that before, he is quite vigilant with Souma and in the end, he would be quite angry. Yanagi admits that there are times when he isn’t at ease like that time at the amusement park but lately, Souma hasn’t been doing that kind of move on her. He happily says that he’s at ease, and that’s that. Fujimoto thinks that he is too relaxed that he is mistaken over a lot of things and where could those two be. Back to the two, Souma has just confessed to Kujou. After looking surprised, Kujou smiles and sheepishly says that she also likes him. Souma says that he knew she would say that but that isn’t what he meant. This puzzles Kujou so Souma tells her that he meant it is ‘like’ on the side of romance. While Kujou looks dumbfound, Souma looks away for he couldn’t face her. He exclaims that it isn’t like he wanted her to give him a definite answer now anyway, she basically doesn’t understand, right. He tells her that he should say that it is just for the satisfaction of his ego and he only wanted to tell her that is how he regards her. Kujou is still dumbfounded. Blushing Souma runs away and shouts that he has to calm down his head a bit. Then, Kujou returns to the inn. Fujimoto asks her where she went. Kujou wonders what that was just now. Why would he suddenly say that he likes her and even if she likes him, but their ‘like’ isn’t the same? And for him to say that it is the side of romance, that is like that boy-girlfriend type.. She is shock over why she suddenly thought of Yanagi kissing her. Since Kujou is holding her head, worried Fujimoto asks what’s up with her and tells her to rest after taking a bath. Kujou nods.
In the room, Tachibana greets her and asks if she is going to take a bath. After saying yes, Kujou hits the table and bangs her head on it when she tripped. ^^; Tachibana asks if she is really alright. Kujou says that it hurts and yes [she is alright]. Kujou gives her some grape candies to prevent heatstroke which she planned to give her earlier on. As Kujou goes in to take a bath, Tachibana mutters about receiving this at this stage when she is already well, it really angers her. That night, Kujou couldn’t sleep for she kept on thinking of the ‘I like you’ so she decided to read books to think of other things. And, she reads the book by the porch below the starry sky. The next day, Kujou had a fever because she didn’t sleep the whole night and kept on reading tutor books. Upon seeing the thick books on the porch, the others are aghast and wonder how many books she brought. Fujimoto tells sick Kujou that she’s lucky that this is the last day. Touching her forehead, Yanagi says that for her to suddenly have a fever. He offers to drive her home from the station. Kujou turns to the side and refuses by saying that there’s no need to. This surprises Yanagi who starts to chuckle again. While Fujimoto is thinking that Yanagi is taking advantage of Kujou’s weakness, Yanagi says that he understands her feelings and urges her to be honest. He tells her that he is going to bring her home and yet, she is still being shy, and she should, more or less, be nice and honest towards him. Feverish and dizzy over Yanagi’s nonstop talk, she tells him that he’s annoying to death. This shocks Yanagi that he timid says, ..understood. Fujimoto tells her to calm down a bit and how about she brings her home instead. Watching by the door, Souma wonders that this ought to be his fault for Kujou to be quite feverish. He blushes upon thinking that perhaps, it is because of him that she has a high fever. His younger sister tearfully hugs her and asks if he is already leaving. Later on, Souma tells the others that he would stay for another day at his place. His younger sister is quite happy about this. Souma thinks that it would be better for Kujou that he isn’t at her side right now. After they bid the Souma family goodbye and left, Makoto and girlfriend arrive with some meat to share with Souma’s guests but they were too late since his guests had already left.. Souma said that they already brought corn so there’s no need for that.
To his surprise, Makoto and girlfriend ask what he is saying, Souma’s friends are his friends. While Makoto tells his girlfriend about wanting to hear Souma talk about Tokyo, Souma realizes that it has been a long time since he has seen them. He smiles and thanks them. Makoto and girlfriend say that it has been a long time since they’ve seen him smile and did something good happen. Souma says there’s nothing. At the station, Fujimoto tells Yanagi that she is going to bring Kujou home and quit giving her that grudge stare. Yanagi is pouting over this. While the other guys are planning to eat dinner before going home, Yanagi asks Tachibana if she’s also going. Tachibana blushes and says that if she isn’t hindering him. This surprises Yanagi. He pats her head and says what she is saying, let’s go. While Yanagi goes to his senpai and talk about what they’ll eat, Tachibana touches her head where Yanagi touched it. At Kujou’s house, her mother exclaims in surprise over Kujou suddenly having a fever. She thanks Tachibana for bringing her home. Tachibana asks how she knew her name. Kujou’s mother says that it is because Kujou always mention her name and she really likes her so thank you for being friends with her. This made Tachibana become shy and giggle. Inside, Kujou’s mother helps Kujou change her clothes and lie on the bed. Luckily, she doesn’t have work tomorrow. Kujou apologizes that her mother asks what foolishness is she saying when she is a nurse but Kujou never once had a cold that it made her feel that it is a bit boring. While her mother happily urges her to drink something hot before sleeping, Kujou says that she thinks that there’s something wrong with her mother’s way of thinking. After Kujo fell asleep, her mother says that she was feverish before was when her father just left. She urges Kujou that it is okay to let her worry about her a bit more. The next day, Kujou’s mother yawns and thinks about making breakfast. To her shock, Kujou greets her a good morning and says that breakfast is done, and later on, she’ll go to work then go to the school library to read books. Kujou’s mother touches her head and asks about the fever. Kujou says that it is gone. Her mother asks if it would be better for her to sleep some more. Kujou says that she still has work. Her mother tells her that there’s no harm in resting for a day and her schedule is quite full with the calendar filled up with circles.
Kujou tells her that for this summer break, she is going to earn money for the training class expenses starting this autumn. Her mother sighs and says that she told her that she’ll pay for that. She asks Kujou if she is really okay. Kujou nods. Kujou blushes upon thinking a lot of things. Just when her mother is saying that her fever is still.., Kujou already left. At school, glum Kujou wonders what to do for she couldn’t concentrate and she did a rude thing = she is lost in thought when her tutored student is asking about a question. While dizzy, she wonders why would Souma regard her that way and what is the ‘like’ that is ‘on the side of romance’? What should she do and what is he considering. She recalls him saying that he doesn’t want her to give him a definite answer right now, this is to satisfy his ego, and he only wants her to know how he regards her. So she sums that up as simply, he only wants to say it to her -> from there: he isn’t at all thinking of getting an answer from her -> conclusion: so, her attitude towards him should be just like how it was before. She starts brainwashing herself to have a heart of stone. And, Souma appears before her. Acting normal, Kujou asks if he has already returned. Souma says that he has something to do today and what about her. While telling herself to have a heart of stone, Kujou says that she’s studying at the library. Souma thinks that it seems that her reaction is too normal. Souma reminds her that he had confessed to her. Kujou blushes and says ya, that’s right. This made Souma blush and says that is okay. Kujou laments over not being able to harden her heart. She wonders what kind of attitude she should have. Seeing her slightly backing away, Souma tells her that he isn’t going to eat her. Kujou says that she didn’t think of that, even if she didn’t.. Souma looks at the bulletin board and notices a sign about a summer temple fair. Souma asks her if she wants to stroll around at the temple fair. Meanwhile, Yanagi is busy smiling while serving the female customers at the café and the girls decided to order more from him. His college friend, who is also a waiter, comments that lately, Yanagi is sparkling brightly. The boss says that thanks to Yanagi, the sales figure is shooting up to the top. At the dressing room, his friend tells Yanagi that it’s great that he is popular and the days pass by quickly. Yanagi gloomily says that he thinks that no matter how specially popular he is with many girls if he wasn’t able to get the crucial heart of the one he loves, then it simply doesn’t have any meaning at all. His friend comments over the strong constricting feeling around him.
After Yanagi agrees to eat out with his friend before going home, his friend asks if there is someone special regarding what he mentioned just now. He says yes, actually, there is someone he has been chasing for so many years. His friend couldn’t believe it and asks if it is such a beautiful high class girl. Yanagi is aghast as he slightly looks away. Looking proud, Yanagi chuckles that it is only a matter of time when she falls into his hands. His friend says that he’s Yanagi after all. His friend says that didn’t he have a girlfriend before but then, that’s quite a different matter since he’s a guy. Yanagi tells him not to say it like he has a villain-type reputation for he is serious when he goes steady. He says that when someone likes him, he would naturally be happy and is very thankful to the other and he also has this mentality of wanting to go steady with the person he likes. There was that era when he doesn’t want to admit that he likes Kujou as if his life depended on it. But, in the end, it is no good, he’ll tell the other party what his means[/desire] for it was not at all good as if not right. [<- I think he means that he has to reject that person since she isn’t the one he likes though before he used to deny liking Kujou so he had admirers hanging around with him.] His friend tells him that those others are very cute so the one he has his heart on is probably beautiful like a goddess. Looking far away, Yanagi says not really--.. Then, he notices a couple of women wearing yukata-s [Japanese robe]. He tells his friends that there are many people wearing a yukata today. His friend says that it seems that there is a temple fair so how about they go there and eat dinner. Yanagi calls him stupid for only the two of them are going but then, forget it, it’s okay. While walking, Yanagi thinks that Kujou is working and wonders what the reason for her to work exceptionally hard this summer. He thinks that when Kujou has decided on something, she will quietly progress that path by herself because he is being too meddlesome with her but if he asked her, she would actually tell him. He only sincerely wishes that she would be able to talk more with him. Soon, they arrive at the temple that has many stalls around the place. His friend says that it is not bad for it is summer. Yanagi says that he starts to become hungry and he wants to eat yakisoba [stir-fry noodles]. While chuckling to himself, Yanagi thinks that these kind of things can make things progress naturally. In short, he first have to invite Kujou during this summer break and then, smoothly get into a pleasant ambiance then push forward a.. Then, he notices Kujou and Souma walking together. Souma gives her a takoyaki [octopus in batter ball] and she thanks him. Yanagi goes into shock and aghast over the pleasant ambiance [between the two].
Comment: Hehe, Souma has beat Yanagi to it again. First, the confession and now, a date at the summer temple fair date. Apparently, his little success with Kujou, which he assumed to be due to himself, has gotten to his head and he became quite complacent in pursuing her. Of course, it doesn’t help that Kujou tends to get annoyed by him if he gets too pushy and meddlesome...well, in this chapter plus the fact that she is feverish at that time. He also let his guard down since Souma wasn’t making a move lately. He must be in a shock now and there is a high chance that all three will meet there. Depending on the mangaka, that can actually lead to a huge misunderstanding and it is possible to really drag this on and on just when I, like Yanagi, thought it is only a matter of time before something major to happen. Well, that major thing happening during the camp turned out to be Souma x Kujou. ^^; Will Yanagi make a comeback before summer ends? Or, will Tachibana take advantage of this and whisk him away while Kujou is preoccupied with Souma? It is amusing though how what Tachibana told Souma before had made him, whether unconsciously or not, to actually do what she wanted him to do in the first place regarding courting Kujou. ^^;; Anyway, there are hints that Kujou somewhat equates ‘romantic like’ with Yanagi though currently she is concerned over how to act towards Souma. Well, for now, Souma will probably just enjoy Kujou’s reactions towards him and the time he spends with her ^^ Scans by 红莲汉组.

  2. All I can say is "Nice Souma!" *thumbs up* I admire him for doing that. Since I found him quite similar to Shintani Hinata of KwMs, I somehow pity him for an unrequited love. I salute him for not following his own rule of 'if-I'm-sure-I-won't-win-I-won't-compete'. At least, he won't regret something important again.

I really like the tsundere Yanagi but if he continues on his plan to let Kujou naturally realize her feelings for him, it might become too late. I want him set aside his pride and confess to her. Kujou really has feelings for him but having her being so slow, it might come to a point that she'll realize it is indeed 'love' after another 10 years.

About Tachibana, the hell I care for her. Hahaha. Kidding! But only half.

But I'm still a loyal KujouXYanagi fan!

    1. (continuation...)
But I don't think that Kujou has some kind of romantic interest on Souma. It just happens that it's the first time someone confess to her like that. Even I will abnormally have my heart beat so fast after hearing such.

    2. Yup, and in a way, it's thanks to Tachibana. Ya..unrequited love is sigh..

Indeed, that is the mistake of most childhood friends in stories..too complacent, always waiting for the girl to notice and well, cannot do anything when girl is snatched away by some other guy. Hm..didn't he confess to her yet or hinted something about it? It seems that Kujou still doesn't know what is 'love' based on this chapter. ^^; And really differentiate the feelings of ordinary 'like' vs romantic 'like'.

      Indeed.

    3. Yanagi should have confess like Souma. Explain to her what is the difference between the romantic 'like' and simple 'like'. Hahaha

    4. True, maybe Yanagi wants her to realize it on her own rather than for him to tell her?

  3. Meh, this is far too drug out and one sided. Yanagi needs to disappear like he did in chapter 3 and make Kujou chase after him a bit.

  5. Hahahaha! Okay so I started my comment wih a laugh. Haha! I don't why but I'm starting to feel annoyed with Yanagi. And yes! Souma beat him with both the confession and the date! I'm excited to see how Yanagi will counterattack this. I guess this little romance thing betlween Kujou amd Souma will trigger Kujou to realize her feelings for Yanagi. In a way, I think Souma is helping Yanagi. Like trying to open Kujou to world of romance. Although I guess it might hurt him. (Aww. And here I am starting to root for Souma.)

Thanks for the wondeful summary Kat! Will look forward to the next one! Cheers!

    1. Hehe, is that so, Pickled Cucumber. True..though it isn't like he is deliberately doing that for that outcome though that is probably what the mangaka is going for.

      Thanks for reading ^-^

  6. Ugh, that was a bad chapter. Thankfully that wasn't actually a mutually recognized date, which I had feared when first reading the chapter.

I was really hoping the unnecessary drama wouldn't continue, but, yet again, Shinobu seems intent on rarely ever allowing the main two characters of this story to spend significant time alone together. I stupidly expected that the last chapter would be the end of a very ill-advised decision to avoid interactions between Yanagi and Kujou, but for it to happen throughout the entirety of another chapter is terrible. Not every shoujo needs a meaningless triangle to be shoved into it.

If I was reading this for anything other than Kujou and Yanagi, I might find a tiny bit of enjoyment in the last two chapters, but the side characters, especially Souma, are awful. Souma was tolerable before chapter 28, but the latest development has turned him into an unsympathetic rival that seems perfectly content with selfishly interfering between two people that he's aware are in love with one another, which has definitely ruined his already weak character for me. I also don't really understand why Tachibana seemed like her old self again in this chapter, since the last one seemed to indicate that she'd be moving on from her superficial attraction to Yanagi soon, but character development is so drawn-out in this story, so I probably shouldn't expect that to happen for another dozen chapters or so.

I'm hoping that Kujou realizes her feelings for Yanagi quickly and that Yanagi can make some grand and beautiful gesture towards Kujou in the next chapter or two, because this cliched attempt at extending the manga with rivals and misunderstandings is wearing very thin, imo, since I've seen it all a hundred times before.

    1. I don't think that this is a bad chapter. Just by reading the summary, I feel this chapter is necessary. Actually, I'm somehow irritated at Yanagi's ego. That only hinders him to progress after all. If it's not because of that, he might be dating Kujou long time ago. But seeing Souma as an awful character, I won't ever agree with you. Souma truly fell in love with Kujou. If you take his place, I think you'll do the same. Because in the story, we can learn that if you lock away your present, you'll forever live in the past-- regretting. That's why I look up to Souma with his courage. But that's all. Even everyone says that at the end it's still Kujou and Yanagi, Souma's love is still not insignificant.

    2. True..even if it would probably lead to Kujou realizing what love is..this can also prolong things with possible misunderstandings and more intrusions between the two, etc.

I can understand what you feel..there are series when I only like a certain couple/characters and it is frustrating when they are not the focus but some others whom I'm not interested in. For this series, I almost stopped reading it before when I realized that it would take a long time for them to be together and there was a tendency to drag things out. I became okay with it = don't have high expectations, that the series will focus on other characters specifically the two rivals. Souma's seems to be somewhat resolved already but not Tachibana's.

      Indeed, though I think she is a bit modest now when she asks if she isn't a hindrance before joining them rather than 'rushing in even if not asked' -type. In a way, the things he told her before might make her fall for him more that she no longer things of him as a 'trophy boyfriend' ^^;

True..well, we can only hope for the best that it won't be dragged for a long time. At the start of the chapter, there was a chart of their 10 year 'love story'/Yanagi's 10 year unrequited love history as to what had happened so far..so maybe something big is going to happen soon.

  8. i think Souma's feeling toward Kujou is just a step for her to realize her feeling for Yanagi :3 And in my opinion, there's no way it will end up SoumaxKujou :3 It must be KujouxYanagi all the way.
Forget about Tachibana, bitch please :v

    1. True, that is probably the goal.

Lol..unfortunately, I think that won't be the case. If the mangaka bothered to give her a past, just like Souma, she would most probably deal with resolving Tachibana's issue = more of her later on.

  13. IT'S TIME FOR A DEATHBATTLE!!!!! Lol I apologize I really just wanted to say that for a sec. Anyhow, thank you so much for the translated review once again! I don't know why some people are so angry with this progression so far. I agree Souma and Tachibana are quite annoying and stick to my impression of them as such. This is because although we have seen their background story and why their actions are justified it still doesn't remove the fact that they are the thorn in our behind for those who wish to see more progression with the main characters. These two successfully killed the mood that was set 2 chapters ago. However, despite this the next few chapters will be interesting depending on the actions that Yanagi takes following this chapter. Will his power level go over 9000 and pursue Kujou? Or will he interfene and further distance his chance to confess his own feelings to Kujou? We can only wait and read.

So, let's hope Yanagi makes a comeback and do things to start making Kujou heart going doki-doki..blush until she's red like a strawberry..etc.. Well, I think Yanagi's actions can connect more with Kujou than his words =P Yup, we can only wait and read..hopefully, our waiting is rewarded ^^
