Kimi ni Todoke [Chapter 86]

After Ume told her that she wants to become a teacher, Sawako exclaims that she, too, also wants to become one. Then, Shouta is standing there. He greets Ume and says that it has been a long time. Ume tells him that he looks quite well [/lively] and she heard a rumor that he and Sawako are lovey-dovey[/really sweet]. This made the two blush. Ume asks him if he plans to go to a local college. Shouta says ya. This made Ume say she thought so. Just when Sawako is going to tell Ume something, Ume tells her that if she’s interested, she can try to go and sit-in [for trial] at the cram school. This somewhat surprises Sawako and Shouta sees her reaction. While walking home, Shouta asks Sawako if she’s interested in going to cram school. He suggests that if she’s interested, how about trying it out. Sawako mutters yes. Sawako thinks that if it is interest, she has that and ever since before, she likes studying and just like a teacher, she wants to think of what method to use to teach. She also thinks that before it is enough to self-study to pass the exam but now, the situation is different, they are exam candidates. [<- not sure but most probably graduating students to go to college] In the cram class, Sawako thinks that everyone is quite serious. She remembers Ayane’s comment about how everyone there is quite motivated since everyone went there to study. Later on, Kent comments over this ‘new’ type of group. He is with the three girls. It made Ume asks up to where they are going to walk together. Kent happily says up to the station. Ume grumbles about this. Just when Kent is talking about more profound experience since they are exam candidates, Ume starts muttering, ‘flunk flunk flunk’. Kent calls her mean. Ume tensely asks Ayane why she is going steady with this kind of person. While Sawako looks tense, Kent happily says that of course he won her over with his passion[/enthusiasm]. Ayane says that Kent is a nice good person. Kent and Sawako are moved by what she said. To their surprise, Ume starts shouting, ‘flunk flunk flunk’. Ayane scolds her to stop that as if she’s cursing them. Ayane asks Sawako about the sit-in trial cram class. Sawako says that it’s quite motivating. She thinks that she really wants to study that she couldn’t sit still.

Soon, the couple separates from the girls since their train is at the other side. After the goodbyes, Sawako and Ume are waiting for their train. Ume asks her if she gave it to him, the Vday gift. This surprises Sawako that she quickly says yes, it is thanks to her, and she is late in reporting to her. Aghast Ume tells her that there’s no need to report to her. Then, Ume exclaims that right now, she won’t be thinking about going steady with Shouta again for her brain is already filled up with the exam thing so honestly speaking, right now, love and other things are troublesome so it is good that she got rejected. She tells Sawako that since they’re going steady, they should keep continue on, so in short, it is like that. Sawako just stays quiet. Ume asks Sawako that she also aspires to be a teacher, is it elementary teacher. Sawako says that currently, she’s thinking of high school. This made Ume comment that no matter where they go, they are competing rivals. Sawako says yes. She finds it strange that she felt quite happy about it. Sawako says that Ume will definitely get into D Normal University. Ume tells her that her [paternal] grandma and parents graduated there and family are all teachers. Sawako exclaims if that grandma is Sakura. Ume exclaims that’s right, her name is obviously quite cute but the person herself is a super terror. Ume asks Sawako what school she wants to get in. Sawako pauses before saying a local college. Ume tells her she paused for a long time before answering. Sawako didn’t notice it that it was a long time. This made Ume ask if she’s hesitating. Ume says that it infuriates her for if it is Sawako, she absolutely can get into D Normal University. Ume admits that right now like this, it is a bit hard for her so she doesn’t have excess energy to think of other things. Sawako is startled when Ume starts encouraging herself by shouting that she will absolute pass and get into D Normal University. At the train, Kent asks Ayane if Sawako would go to the cram school. Ayane says who knows, and fundamentally, Sawako likes studying and since she went to the trial sit-in, it means she has an interest in it. Kent asks how Ayane views studying. Ayane says that it isn’t because she likes studying.. She recalls Pin saying that she is a kid who has a developing potential. Ayane thinks no, no, she’ll flunk. She mutters if she’ll be able to get a recommendation.
Ayane thinks that in the end, at that time [marriage proposal], she didn’t say it to Kent that there are some other school that she thinks is good. Almost half of the students who test for Tokyo colleges flunked but can she say those words, anyway, she and Kent are going to Sapporo. Kent tells her that he must strive hard and she shouldn’t be too risky for based on what she’s doing now, she ought to get a recommendation. Ayane asks if he should strive hard whereas she shouldn’t. Kent says that isn’t what he meant. “How can I say it. I hope that you can loosen up and don’t be too tense. It’s fine to be happy. Although it seems that you don’t quite like yourself, Ayane. But, I like your [distinctive] character the most. Even if your mouth would always say, you are ‘not cute’ but I think you’re very cute.” Ayane asks about this character of hers. Kent says that it is the awkward[/clumsy] her. Ayane mutters that for him to say that, is she really awkward. He says yes. Ayane reflects on what she is like – strong personality but a coward, timid and gutless, she also has no self-confidence, and always protecting herself. She remembers being told that self-confidence can come out from oneself. Sawako arrives home. Her mother asks how the cram school is. Sawako says that it makes her want to study and she learned a lot of things. Her mother asks if she wants to go. Sawako says yes. While Sawako is talking about using her deposited New Year money, her mother tells her that she should depend on her parents. This made Sawako to ask her mother to please let her go to cram school. In her room, Sawako recalls Pin telling her not to back out [and choose a second choice] on something she has already decided on, and his recommendation for her is D Normal University where Ume is also planning to go. Sawako thinks that she already decided to become a teacher and know what way she should go forward but what’s making her hesitate is.. She thinks of Shouta. She shakes her head and says no, she isn’t hesitating, she is going to do the things that she can do, strive hard in studying and take the exam for college with Shouta. On the table, there are papers about D Normal University.
Comment: I guess Sawako’s dilemma is somewhat common for high school lovers who have to separate because they will go to different colleges. In her specific case, would you go to a college that suits your potential and capability or go to a different college not suitable to your aspiration, to just to be with your boyfriend? Since the schools are far, it would be most likely a long distance relationship. Somehow, I think these two are very unlikely to be wooed away by others. Both can be selfless when it comes to the other party. For Sawako, she is even hesitant to ask for her parents’ help with the expenses. For Shouta, they had trouble before when he gives too much space for Sawako to be with friends that they misunderstood each other. I think Shouta can be very understanding about this too and after all, it would be just a temporary separation wherein they can still communicate or visit each other sometimes. Well, it isn’t exactly decided yet if Shouta would indeed study at a local college. But then, would it really harm Sawako’s future if she went to the local college? I may be wrong since I’m not quite familiar with teacher hiring procedures, but does it really matter if Sawako can get high grades from a college not exactly specializing in teaching? The students won’t really check from which school the teacher is from, right? I don’t think the school would complain much if Sawako can do her job as a teacher well. Also, the school she’ll most probably apply for would be her current high school so she’s an alumnus. That is unless, there are limited slots for teachers in the school she wants to apply for so of course, they will get the college graduate from a better school. As for Ayane, I’m not sure if her answer to why she’s going steady with Kent is good..it seems like there is no love in it but then, there is a saying that it is hard to love others if you don’t love yourself. Is that the case for Ayane since her lack of self-confidence is mentioned? Though, according to the net, that isn’t true since one can love themselves if they are first loved by others which what Kent seems to be doing. Well, for her to mention that Kent is a nice guy is enough to move Kent and Sawako. From what Kent said in the train, I wonder if that is specifically about the college thing or in general, which is for Ayane to be relax and be happy. It seems to be a like Ayane has to like herself and enjoy things..which would probably make her want to go for things that she would want to do and things that she can do without fear of failing. Then, he puts in the things he likes about her to help boost her self-confidence but in the end, it still relies on herself to know it herself. It is useless if others say positive things but she isn’t convinced herself. Hm..I think Kent would make a good therapist or psychologist. =P He is observant with people and can say the right things ^^ Lastly, about Ume, won’t it be amusing if she also marries a teacher =P As I mentioned before, I think she and Pin would make an amusing couple. Anyway, I wonder if Ume is somewhat like ‘sourgraping’ when she said that it is a good thing that she got rejected since she’ll be busy with college exams that she has no time for love or anything else. ^^; But from what she said, it does seem like saying that she won’t go after Shouta anymore..and that is her way of wishing Sawako well with Shouta =P Also, in her own way, it seems that she has a way of motivating Sawako like the Vday chocolates, and now, regarding college. 1. I love Ume and Kento so much, it's sad that they get so much hate based only on their anime appearances and their not-so-good character introductions. Whether it ends with KentoxAyane or PinxAyane, Kento really cares for her and I'm a strong believer that, if it actually is PinxAyane, Kento will be the first to help her out because he wants her happy, same goes for her wanting to go away and stuff, he's a genuinely good person. What upsets me about this chapter though is that, regardless of KnT being very slow, I feel like they are going waaay slower lately because it feels like they're still just introducing a conflict but the future arc has started back in chapter 77 or so. I'm sure this drama will go on all throughout their third year of high school but I expected them to, by now, already be handling with the fact that some of them going away as opposed to still deciding to stay for each other. Last chapter, I thought it was amazing how surprised Ayane and Sawako looked at Chizu when she said she wasn't going o make a choice based on Ryu because, even though she's clearly lying, of all three she's the only one who probably doesn't really know how to live without "her guy" and yet she's the only one saying she won't shape her life around him if he was to leave while Sawako and Ayane are both pondering a lot. Ugh, the lack of Chizu and Ryu this chapter also kills me. Their build up is very slow but what I really hate is when it goes like build up, build up, build up, then a great chapter like 82, then it goes wrong and then it goes cold, cold, cold, cold, cold, they don't appear for a while and boom, build up again. I-NEED-THEM-TO-AT-LEAST-SHOW-UP. :*sobbing* THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE SUMMARY!!

    1. Also, I can't helpt but to think about HOW lonely Chizu will get soon enough because if both Ayane and Sawako go to cram school, plus with Ryu training all the time, she really WILL die of loneliness like a bunny.

    2. Yup, I agree. ^^

Indeed, it is quite slow and most likely, that is their main conflict throughout the third year.

That's right..it did became like that.

      Thanks for reading ^-^

Well, Chizuru is keeping herself somewhat busy by working at the ramen store. ^^

  4. Thank you for the summary.

Ugh. I really don't like Ume-baka U__U I still can't believe she says she wants to be a teacher... I kinda get the feeling that becoming one is not something that she really wants, but then again who knows???

I like this manga. I watched both anime seasons and I would really like it came to an end. In my humble opinion the author keeps inserting all this type of situations that are really... meh.

But then again, I'm sure that some people might relate to what's going on with the characters.

Well, thanks again and I apologize if I sounded too whiny >__<

Hehe, it does seem to be out of the blue. Indeed, who knows..but from this chapter, she seems to really want to become one and get into that college.

Is that so..well, I guess she wants to prolong things until the high school graduation so these conflicts which graduating students ought to be able to relate to ^^

      Don't mind..^^

  5. Thanks for the summary! It's always great to read it here (:

I think Sawako still has a long way to go before she can truly understand herself :( It would be interesting to see Shouta and her in a long term relationship, but not for long. Hope the author don't stretch the story any further (or worse, introduce new male and female rivals in a new "college arc"@_@)

  7. the time flies too fast in this chapter, huh....
i'm not really excited about this chapter, you know, since i'm big fan of Ayane&Pin and Ryu&Chizu. But well yeah, the main couple will soon face the 'challenge' of their relationship. But i gotta tell you, they are the main couple, they're fixed couple. Nothing will happen with them ahhahaha, sure of it! kinda! hahahahh. Nothing to worry about. I will just focus on Ayane's case...
Well, what i see here is Kent is definitely not the one for Ayane. He obviously doesn't give what she truly want. He's just the same like guys that she dated before. Just a little differences, different motives, there's courage, and he truly cares for her, he's a nice guy, he's safe choice. But He told her not to strive hard, he told her to loosen up, relax, be happy. He obviously doesn't know her very well. She wants to try to go the the college in Tokyo, which means she wants to strive hard and be happy because of her own choices. Ayane knows her own characteristic, she knows how to describe herself. She actually knows what she wants for herself, but no courage, no self-confidence, and she's afraid of hurting people who cares about her because she's actually very nice person. And she's a little immature, we all know that she's afraid of failing, she's afraid to starting something for her like liking someone, loving someone, which means she's too afraid ended up hurting herself. And for the conclusion, Pin knows her better. Pin describes her personality, characteristic way way better than Kent. And we caught Ayane is over thinking about them is the evidence. It means, what Pin describes are correct, right for most of them.
I don't say Ayane better off with Pin, well yeah she's better off with Pin because damn i love it, but i don't think pin is actually the one for her too, because i don't know...well i just hope best for Ayane and Pin for real.
As for the Kurumizawa Ume-chan...she's really gonna be teacher?! and she's really serious about it?! aahhahah she's gonna be the one who gives this "scary" atmosphere for class, for the students... you know, i kinda imagine that, her future students will idolize her without aware of her actual characteristic and end up like Kazehaya and Chizu who kinda surprised to see the real her. hahahah. I bet she's gonna be tough teacher, 'the beauty strict' one
By the way, i really love the character developments, they are so beautiful, nice, perfect, and visible. That's what i love about Japan's Stories, their character developments! it's all about the individuals, the choices they make, the results they get.
And as for you Kat, I love you!! Thank you for the hard work!! I really appreciate it! I like your comment posts too! And your comment of the chapters too! Keep up with the hard work! We'll be waiting for the next chapters and the other stories. Umm, by the way, when is the next chapter coming out?

    1. Yup, they are already fixed so..no matter what happens, they will be together in the end.

      Ah..good point..I guess you are kind of contradicting since Pin doesn't seem to be interested in her romantically? I think Kent also made a valid point on relaxing and be happy. Well, for me, it is like, don't force yourself into something and just do what you really want = happy..rather than doing something because you have the talent/capabilities to do so. I think Ayane is a bit indecisive over what exactly she wants to do with the fear of failure factored in. ^^;

Yup, it seems that Ume is serious about it. True..and I'm sure a lot of her students would fall for her =P

      Ya ^^

Thanks for reading and the comment ^-^

Ah..the magazine would be out in Japan on January 11th..but on the preview, I couldn't find Kimi ni Todoke ^^; though it is suppose to be out on this issue so let's wait and see.
