Miseinen Dakedo Kodomo Janai [Chapter 19]

While the café servers are cleaning the broken plate, Karin is asking Nao what happened all of a sudden, isn’t he feeling well. Nao recalls the broken plate when his mother is screaming at his father, and when his mother is having a tantrum and shouted that if there’s no Nao, she would have a happy life together with someone else earlier on. Karin is worried for he seems to be in pain and she doesn’t know what to do. Just when she is about to call for someone, Nao stops her and tells her that he is alright. Nao tells her that he cannot endure the sound of something breaking. When Karin asked why, he explains that he told her before that after his father’s company went bankrupt, every time he would go find a lover, his mother would quarrel with him and afterwards, plates would be smashed into pieces and would shout things like ‘if there’s no Nao at that time’. When he was young, it was a shock to him that he always felt that he shouldn’t have appeared in this world and right now, he doesn’t think this way. But, if he heard something breaking, he would reflexively be in pain for a bit of time and he’ll be okay. Nao laughs it off and says that this topic is quite serious that shouldn’t be discussed during a date. He claims that it is just a bad habit so don’t mind it too much. He is surprised when Karin apologizes to him. He asks why she is apologizing and tells her to forget everything just now, he had talked too much. Karin says that it is okay and what to do..for she has also always done that kind of thing, ‘breaking plates to vent out one’s anger’. Nao is stunned. Karin tells him that before, Isuzu taught her to do that and she will feel better afterwards. So whenever she is being treated as not important, she would smash plates and after destroying them, she felt better and slowly, she always does that. Karin dreamily says that she understands it for Nao’s mother definitely really enjoys that ‘high’/joy but since she married Nao, she doesn’t do that kind of thing anymore. Even if she knows that money is used to buy a plate, she also knows that smashing plates is such an awful thing and since Nao couldn’t endure it, she won’t do it again throughout her life. Then, Karin freaks out over her melted ice cream on her French toast. While Karin happily eats, Nao wonders if there’s something wrong for that’s the only thing she has to say about his trauma. This made Nao burst into laughter. He asks how come every time he talks with her, it goes off topic as if his psychological trauma doesn’t matter at all. He tells her that they quickly eat so that they can go to the main goal of ringing that bell.

Nao is surprised when Karin says that psychological trauma already doesn’t matter for she is already his wife and right now, the closest relative to him is her, isn’t it. Nao says ya. Karin says that means, her opinion is the very first consideration [, not his mother’s] and she absolutely would not accept those words about only Nao not being born in this world. Nao recalls her[?] saying before that if he isn’t here, it seems that she cannot live on. While continuing to eat, Karin happily says, see, it is resolved. This made Nao laugh if it resolved like that. Outside Lon Café, Karin looks at the map on where they are going next. Nao leans down to look at it and says that the bell should be nearby. Just as Karin is saying that it is still quite far away, she quickly hides the map from him. She nervously asks if he saw it. He says no and asks why she won’t let him see it. Karin insists that she’ll lead the way and she asked her mother the way to go. Karin thinks that it is because she knows that bell can make love come true and Nao would definitely have that perplexed expression a while ago. Seeing Karin looking tense, Nao suggests that they go to that observation deck to look around first before going to the lovers’ hill bell. Karin says okay then she tensely asks how come he knew that lovers’ hill thing. Nao casually says that while they’re walking, he saw the signs about it all over the place = bell of Ryuken on top of the lovers’ hill. She exclaims if he knew that if they ring that bell, the two of them will be together forever. Nao says that he doesn’t know that. Karin is shocked that she exposed it herself. Nao tells her that he did think in that direction because of the ema-s and the couples’ omamori [amulet]. Karin asks if he knew, why..when he obviously hates the sound of bell ringing and he would still follow her. Nao says that there’s something he wants to tell her. At the top of Enoshima lighthouse observation tower, Nao exclaims that it is an amazing 180 degree view, and compared to a night scene, he likes the sea scenery for the colors and form changes that he doesn’t get tired of it. While she’s in his arms, Karin is more nervous over what is going to happen now for aren’t they like the other passionate couples here. Karin nervously says that she also likes the sea that she wants to always stay here. Noticing this, Nao hugs her and says ya. This made Karin blush and more tense since he is so near her. Nao tells her that in his house, his parents would always quarrel and are quite noisy and he couldn’t bear the loneliness so he wholeheartedly wanted to run away from that place.

There is a scene of Nao suppressing the quarrelling noise with earphone music. When he was 18 years old, he learned about this marry Karin thing that he quickly agreed to it. He didn’t think about becoming happy after getting married for he only thought of making the noisy loneliness into a quiet loneliness. Karin is puzzled about those kind of loneliness so he explains that compared to being lonely with people around him, he felt it is much better to be lonely while alone. Karin says that if he got married, then all the more he cannot be alone. Nao says that’s right, but then, if he ignores the other party then it would be like he’s alone. Karin realizes that this is the reason why he told her he hated her before. Nao tells her that a rich ojousama like her isn’t what he had imagined and it obviously shouldn’t be like this but.. He hugs her and says obviously, he never thought of smiling like this, and having a happy life. “Karin, you’re really amazing. If it weren’t for you, I also wouldn’t have become like this. So, in order to thank you..I will satisfy you with whatever you want to do and wherever you want to go..” Karin asks if this is why he suddenly told her yesterday that they are going on a date. He says, yes. Pushing him away, Karin says if that is so, then don’t ring the bell with her. She tearfully tells him that this is a bell that can make a love come true and she won’t be happy at all if he is going to ring the bell with her out of gratitude, and don’t treat her like a fool. Karin thinks that she detests this more compared to him not knowing the meaning of ringing the bell. As Karin turns away, Nao tells her that isn’t she the one treating him like a fool, if it is only out of gratitude, he also doesn’t want to go there together with her to ring the bell. Flustered Karin asks if he’s saying.. He holds her hand and says, let’s go. At the bell, Karin holds the rope and asks him if it is really okay to ring the bell because like this, he would be with her forever. Nao laughs and says that it is good if it truly became like that. Ting. Then, they bought a lovers’ padlock to symbolize that they’ll be ‘together forever’ with their feelings locked inside. Nao writes their names on the padlock and both of them have keys to it. Karin hopes that they forever won’t be using the key to the lock and she prays and they would definitely be together forever. And, while holding hands, they walk back. At the mansion, Karin bids Nao goodbye. Karin wonders what to do for this is unexpectedly such a happy date as if it is a dream but it is absolutely not in dreamland. She holds the key and happily touches her face with her fist that has the key inside. “So I’m saying, I didn’t know that we’ll separate until senpai said that sentence to me on the second day, ‘Karin, let’s divorce’.”

Comment: And, after the happy date, Karin’s fortune comes true. It makes me wonder if Nao was thinking of it all along because of what he talked about with Isuzu or Isuzu pushed up his threat..well, not really sure what else he can threaten them with. ^^; Well, Nao is saying those things, there is a bit of ‘sweatdrop/tense sweat’ on his face so, is he partially lying or sincere yet he has plans of divorcing temporarily? If Isuzu directly caused the divorce, he just made Karin hate him and totally sever their relationship. Of course, there is the possibility of Karin not agreeing to divorce. In a way, I think Nao is probably sincere about the ‘together forever’ ritual after all, divorce isn’t exactly the end of everything but then, I’m not really sure I like where the series is heading. Is it a divorce, court again, re-marry and the end? Hm..Karin’s reaction to Nao’s trauma is quite optimistic and naïve in a way but it seems to have a good effect on Nao. And what she mentioned about breaking plates is true..there are indeed people who feel better on venting their anger and frustration by destroying things..well, in a way, it is a bit better than hitting someone, right? Nevertheless, such things can cause trauma to children especially the ‘if only you didn’t exist’ thing. That scene on using his headphones to cover up the noise..hehe, aside from his former house, it is quite handy in his new house to cover up the neighbor’s noise :P Also, I don’t know if there are actually people who would want to unlock a love lock if they didn’t end up together. ^^; From the place where they hanged the lock, I think it is slightly easier to find it again. By the way, in the scan, it is written that the next chapter will be out on November 5th but in the official webpage, there is no preview for this series so I think it is on a break in the next Shocomi magazine.
