Kimi ni Todoke [Chapter 84]

It is morning and Chizuru wakes up from some noise at her window. She opens the window and got splat by a snowball. It is Ryu. After fixing her hair, Chizuru goes out and greets Ryu who gives her a small bag of her favorite snacks. Today is White day [wherein guys who received chocolates give back sweets to the girls who gave them chocolates on Vday. This is on March 14.] Chizuru is frustrated and happy over how much Ryu knows her since it is the snacks she used to eat and makes her happy when she was young. Ryu watches her as she eats one of the snacks. She recalls him telling her that he would be going to college. She thinks that she thought he would always stay here and what kind of college, how near or far is it, but that doesn’t matter for even if he didn’t say it, only she can understand his way of thinking. She believed that she knows his everything but ever since he confessed, no, ever since that girl who confessed to him appeared, a lot of things that she doesn’t understand are happening. After saying it is delicious, Chizuru asks if he jog to her place. He says yes. She is thinking that if he goes to college, then he can continue to play baseball. She seems to convince herself that is a really good thing. Noticing her expression, Ryu asks her what it is since she looks awful. This surprises her and apologizes for it. While Ryu says that isn’t what he meant, Chizuru exclaims that she is happy, stupid, thank you for the snacks, they are very delicious but you’re an idiot. Ryu says understood, in the end, he’s an idiot. This made Chizuru hesitate and takes it back by saying that he isn’t an idiot..then in the end, she says, he is. Going inside, she thanks him again and says that she’ll eat the rest for breakfast. Ryu tells her not to have an upset stomach. Inside, Chizuru wonders if from today on, they are going to separate. She looks at Ryu jogging off and thinks that no, earlier on, she and Ryu are already separated. At the [future] aspiration consolation room, Pin is talking with Shouta. Just when Ayane is about to open the door, she is startled to see Shouta coming out. After the initial surprise over the two of them being there so early in the morning, Pin tells Shouta to quickly go. Pin says that Ayane came in time and tosses a throat candy [/lozenge] to her. After being surprised by it, Ayane asks if it is a return gift for White Day and is it a joke that he unexpectedly remembered. Holding two more candies, Pin tells her to give these two for Chizuru and Sawako. Ayane comments that it is cheap that Pin wants it back if she doesn’t want it. Upon seeing his held out hand, she recalls Pin stroking her head and it felt warm. Ayane quickly grabs the candy and thanks him. Pin teases her that he didn’t hear it that to her embarrassment, Ayane repeatedly thanks him. Pin laughs for her 3x thanks and warns her not to catch a cold. As Pin leaves, Ayane wonders if that is why he gave her those candies. Shouta moves aside to let Ayane inside the room. She enters the room. Holding the candy tightly, she thinks if a throat candy can drive away the cold, then what is a doctor for. And, she looks at some books in the bookcase.

Soon, the other students are coming to school. Sawako notices some guys giving gifts to the girls that she excitedly wonders if she’s going to get one. Shouta greets her. She is overly excited that she passed over their classroom. He tells her that they go home together after school today since it was forecasted to be a clear day today, and it is White Day. Really happy that she is also going to get a White Day gift, Sawako exclaims yes. This made Shouta laugh and comment that she is a bit too unnatural to which Sawako denies. Later on, Chizuru is grumpy over the throat candy to which Sawako optimistically thinks that Pin hopes that they don’t get laryngitis as exam candidates [/graduating students]. This made Chizuru comment that it is too early. At a café, Kent gives Ayane a small bottle of candies. Ayane thanks him and feels a bit bad over eating it. Then, they show off each other’s birthday gifts which they got from each other [before, I think]. Ayane got a pair of earrings that she is currently wearing. Kent is using the keychain she gave him. Kent is quite excited over the gifts that they will give each other this year. This made Ayane comment that he’s quite an excitable[/impetuous] person. Ayane gives him a gift and hopes that she’ll continue to be under his care/[yoroshiku]. Kent asks if that is okay. Ayane says that it is because he also gave her something on Vday. Kent exclaims that he’s very happy and also says, yoroshiku. Ayane informs Kent that she plans to take cram classes. This puzzles Kent that he says that he recalls she doesn’t plan on fighting for a recommendation [to get admitted to college]. Ayane admits that she said that but she wants a better guarantee. Kent happily says that as a third year student, he also cannot go to his parttime job all day long so he has to also be serious and enthusiastic. Ayane asks if they are going together. Kent happily says together, together. After a bit of hesitation, Ayane informs Kent about the college she wants to go. She is surprised when Kent happily says that he anticipates it for both of them will be at Sapporo. Ayane is speechless when he says that he[/they] can have fun as much as he want, live independently[/alone], and then, they can eat together. “Ah, do you want to live together?” Kent laughs and says that he’s kidding for he’ll be scolded to death by her mother. Ayane says, geez, they have to pass the [entrance] college exams first. Smiling Kent says that’s right, after all, as much as possible, he wants to go in the same university that she goes to, no, absolutely go there. Serious Ayane asks what if she goes to an exclusive female university. Kent happily says that he’ll become ‘Kenko’ [female version of Kent]. Then, Kent smiles. There is a scene of Ayane taking a book from the meeting room and it is about colleges in Tokyo. Kent says that he’s serious and whether it is really excited[/anticipating], very excited or super excited, it is hard for him to describe. “I will absolutely properly cherish you.” Ayane says that currently, she is being cherished by him. Kent tells her that he’s saying more and more cherish her. Touching her hand, Kent says, “..right now, even if I’m only a high schooler, only a student, but one day. Let’s live together, Ayane. Wake up together, and then eat together. At night, sleep on the same bed and [share] pillows. Do you understand..what I mean. *After a pause, Ayane says, ya* Let’s get married, Ayane.”

Meanwhile, Shouta is leading Sawako to a different path that is a surprise since he won’t tell her where they are going. Sawako felt happier if she doesn’t know. They talk a bit about taking the walk easy in order not to tire Sawako. To Shouta’s shock, Sawako seems to think that this walking work-out is his gift for her since it is White Day. Shouta clarifies that he will give her something. This surprises Sawako for currently, she is already happy so she’ll become happier. Shouta curses for he really wants to hug her tightly. Sawako stands up straight and tells him to go ahead. Shy Shouta says that he’s enduring for they are outside and even if it a dark, it is a clear.. Sawako exclaims that she’s the same and she’s embarrassed. Soon, Shouta buys a canned drink from a vending machine and gives it to Sawako. He tells her to rest a bit. Moved Sawako happily holds the drink and thanks him. Shouta has to frantically explain that it isn’t the return gift for the White Day, it is just something while they’re resting. This surprises Sawako that she wonders what she’s going to get. Then, Shouta brings her to a place where it looks beautiful when it becomes night. It is a view of the town with lights lit up. Sawako happily asks if this is her White Day gift. He says yes but the main thing is.. He takes out a small rose-designed box of cookies and gives it to her as his return gift. Sawako is happy for she can use the box for something else even if she finished eating it. Shouta comments that he thinks that what she makes is more delicious. Sawako says it isn’t so and this is definitely more delicious. Teary-eyed Sawako says that it seems that she got a lot of White Day gifts. Shouta tells her that he wanted to give it to her at this place. Then, Shouta points out where her house is, his house, and the school. And the farthest one there, is the college he wants to go, that local college. Sawako says that is the college where she’s going. Shouta says that there is a specialization in sports science there though he is still investigating so he didn’t tell her parents but he wants to tell her ahead of time what he thinks. Sawako comments that they are going to the same college. Shouta says ya, for he thinks that he would definitely always stay in this place, and more or less, throughout his life. Sawako says yes. She thinks that she also would definitely stay in this place throughout her life, together with Shouta in this scenery. They hold hands as they walk back. Sawako hopes they would be together forever. And winter passes, spring arrives. After the thick accumulated snow melts away, they’ve become third year students. One year left of high school life.

Comment: And, the biggest surprise here is Kent’s marriage proposal. I have mixed feelings over this because Ayane doesn’t seem to whole-heartedly love him like he does. If she did, I would be very moved by that. This guy is way too fast or maybe he is really serious about Ayane to the point of wanting to marry her. Hehe, maybe way too fast compared to the other two guys ^^; It can also be a way of making her only his especially since they will most probably separate during college or even different places in Japan. Actually, that is a bit unknown because I have a feeling that Kent would most probably follow her wherever she decides to go. He gives me an impression that he is really like a love-sick puppy who is very eager to please. I’m still not sure how to interpret those Ayane-Pin scenes. Is it love or something else? It is like the mangaka is playing up a love triangle or something. Chizuru-Ryu is a bit stagnant. Chizuru’s last thoughts before Ryu left aren’t quite reassuring since it is like they are drifting apart yet remaining cordial/normal in their interactions. Sawako and Shouta’s relationship is currently in ‘safe -no one can break up’ status. This is a couple we currently don’t have to be worried about. It is amusing over how Sawako kept on mistaking everything that Shouta does and gives to her as his return gift. :P And, they are the ones who are going to the same college, and living in the same place together forever. So for their third year, they probably have lots more lovey-dovey and less problems though I’m not so sure for the other two couples. Scans by 夜莺工作室
