Last Game [Chapter 39]

Outside a huge building, Kujou wonders if she came too early. She recalls Souma asking her to go to the theme park together with him for doesn’t she have something to tell him. Kujou wonders if he already noticed it. Remembering Tachibana telling her to quickly get Souma to give up, Kujou decides that she must tell him clearly about it. Holding the two tickets, Souma sees her and asks if she has been waiting for a long time. He tells her that it seems that this place has an amusement park and an aquarium so how about they go to the aquarium since they already went to an amusement park. Thinking that she must tell him, she says about that, I.. Freaking out, Souma exclaims for her to wait, she is already going through rejecting someone mode, it’s too early!! He explains to her that in this kind of thing, it should take time for them to get pass the anticipated day before carrying that out. “Do you plan on wasting the tickets!” Kujou asks is that so.

Feeling like crying, Souma tells her that’s right, and by the way, she always make him do this explain things clearly. “-in short, accompany me today.” Kujou says okay. Souma requests that she can temporarily forget that confession not long ago since she always stiff towards him. Kujou says that is a very difficult request. In the end, Souma relents and says that is true because Kujou is going to reject him afterwards and he will be rejected. Souma smiles and says that he wants to see her smiling today. Kujou nods and says that she’ll do that as much as she possibly could. So, Souma tells them that they’re going. At his apartment, Yanagi is grumpy and uneasy. Looking at the clock, he thinks that the two are in the theme park by now. He’s so curious and even if he is very curious, Souma had taunted him if he is going to follow them, after all, Yanagi lost to him but it’s unlikely he’ll stoop that low, right? Since Yanagi have done that and Souma said it like that, Yanagi couldn’t do it again. He is really curious what they are doing right now.

Inside the aquarium, watching some fishes, Kujou says, ah, there’s so many fishes. Souma thinks that she is still stiff. Kujou asks what fish does he like? The ones she likes are mackerel and saury. Souma laughs and says that she’s quite mean for she’s talking about the food that she likes. Flustered Kujou asks if she cannot say it like that. He muses out loud that it is a total failure. He thinks that she always divert from the direction of normality, she’s also slow[-witted] and extremely stupid but against expectations, she tends to speak out and hit the target. He really ought to hate that personality of hers and honestly speaking, how did he come to like her. Then, they see a sea otter holding a shellfish. The two are moved and Kujou says that it is very cute. Souma says that she unexpectedly knows what is cute. Kujou says besides that, that shellfish looks very delicious. He tells her not to mention about eating again.

Kujou takes out her cellphone to take a picture. Souma notices the phone strap. As Souma asks her if she is finished taking a picture, he thinks that there is already someone inside her heart but even if it is like that..just for today.. Soon, they look at some penguins, and eat a snack. Souma tells her that the dolphin show is starting so they have to quickly go there so that they can sit at the front most seats. They happily watch the dolphin jump out of the water. Kujou says that is amazing. While Souma is saying about it being daring to sit at the front most, they got splashed with water by the dolphin. They aren’t too happy now about sitting at the front most. They laugh as she says that this is quite troublesome. He apologizes for belittling the dolphin. He watches her smile as she dries herself with a handkerchief. Later on, by the seaside area, Kujou picks up a small shell. Souma calls out to her. Bending near her, he says, “I like you. ..can you give me the answer?”

Kujou thinks that ever since he confessed, she has always been blindly running away, not wanting to face herself and Souma’s feelings head on. What’s up with her awful thinking about ‘the past is better’ and ‘I want to go back’. “I don’t understand[/know] anything. *picture of her cellphone with Yanagi’s cellphone strap* This feeling. How can I possibly, easily make it disappear again.” Clenching her fist, teary-eyed Kujou says, “-I want to be with Yanagi. I like him. ..so, ..I’m sorry. ..I’m really sorry..” Souma leans his head on her shoulder and asks if he can stay like that for a while. “..Actually, ever since from the start, I realized that I’m no good.” Touching his chest, Kujou says, “..you’re wrong. It isn’t because you are no good. It isn’t that. It is just that the person I like is Yanagi.” Souma smiles and thinks, “Ah yes, probably, it is because she is this kind of person that I have fallen in love with her.” 

Later on, Kujou kept on crying that he tells her not to cry too much. She says that even if he says that but ever since she was born, it is the first time she encountered this thing that she also didn’t know what to do about it. Also, it is the first time she heard someone saying that he likes her. Souma asks for the first time? She says ya. He asks if he is the first. She says ya. He recalls thinking that he couldn’t become first. This made Souma smile and says, ...then, that’s good. And, Souma returns to his apartment. He thinks that compared to feeling sad and remorseful, it felt that he has unload the burden that is on his shoulders. Ding dong. There is an express delivery sent to him. Carrying the box inside, he notices that it is sent by his mother. He opens the box and they are filled with vegetables. His mother wrote that these are for him, picked vegetables from the farm, and they are all chosen by his father. ‘Eat them’. Souma starts to cry and mutters to his stupid father not to stubbornly choose this time to send these over.

Comment: And, that was the last date. Not sure if it is the first..was it? I guess Souma is aiming for a one last ‘feel good’ before the inevitable rejection. In a way, they did temporarily lose the awkwardness. It is a nice setting of the mood for the rejection..hehe, okay, I’m not sure everyone would want that kind of rejection..date first, have a good time before it is over, or just reject and get it over it. ^^;; Nevertheless, this had helped Souma’s self-inferiority for it isn’t personally about him that she is rejecting him. And according to her, he is also the first to formally confess to her which boosted up his ego that he cannot be the first. The last part, I’m not too sure why he cried. Is it because his father brought ‘comfort food’? Even if he happen to be rejected that day, his family is still there for him? Is it because he finally realized the rejection because he confessed at his farm before and it now comes somewhat in full circle with the vegetables? Or, he ran away from the farm because of a ‘failed love’ and now, it seems to be calling him again because after the second ‘failed love’, he now has a higher self-confidence?
